Both victims were found dead on October 2, 2023 after drowning in a pool on Gheblehshenas's property, which had been licensed as an in-home daycare center since 2021

The fact that Gheblehshenas, 67, was not home at the time was likely a contributing factor in her receiving a shorter sentence. Fathizadeh, 43, pleaded guilty in February while her mother opted to go to trial. Gheblehshenas was found guilty by a jury on March 24. Fathizadeh was also convicted of seven additional counts of child endangerment "related to separate allegations of transporting children in a vehicle without properly restraining them," per reporting from NBC Bay Area.

The Mercury News further notes that Judge Bernal’s sentences "generally fell in the middle range of what he was legally authorized to hand out," with a lack of prior criminal history benefitting both defendants. They will each also earn a half-year of credit for the jail time they've already served.

In a harrowing statement before the court, Scott Hanan — Lily’s father — detailed the challenging fertility journey he and his wife undertook for 15 years before finally realizing their dreams via adoption.

“Losing Lily was not only a loss for us, but also a loss for her birth family,” Hanan said. “Our home still has a silence that should never exist … Part of us is just waiting for her to come home.”

Related: More Details Emerge on the Two Toddlers Who Drowned at a San Jose Daycare Center

Image via GoFundMe

Daly City Man Accused In at Least Two Violent Incidents Arrested for Alleged Battery of Castro Bar Doorperson

A 24-year-old Daly City man has been arrested in connection with a mid-April incident in which he allegedly punched a woman who was working the door at the bar Midnight Sun in the Castro neighborhood.

SF News

assaults

castro

nightlife

gay nightlife

gay bars

crime

Jay Barmann

A 24-year-old Daly City man has been arrested in connection with a mid-April incident in which he allegedly punched a woman who was working the door at the bar Midnight Sun in the Castro neighborhood.

As the Bay Area Reporter reports, San Francisco police arrested 24-year-old Vaizzah Taito of Daly City last week, booking him on one count of misdemeanor battery in connection with an April 18 incident at Midnight Sun.

In that incident, doorperson Calliope Solis, 35, said she was violently punched by Taito at around 10:50 pm when she refused to allow him into the bar — based on previous experience with his behavior.

Solis previously described the situation to the Bay Area Reporter, saying that Taito approached the door at the bar with two women, while she was checking IDs and taking cover charges. Solis did not know Taito's name, but she said she had met him through a mutual acquaintance, and about two years earlier he had grabbed her by the hair at The Edge when she refused to answer questions he was asking her about someone they both knew.

"I … said, 'You are not welcome here and you know why,'" Solis tells the BAR. "The girl [he was with] asks me, ‘Why isn’t he allowed in?’ so I [turned my] focus to her and said, 'He knows why.' As I’m saying that, he lunges around her and punches me in the face. I took a second to recoil, and by that time, he had already sprinted away."

Solis reported the incident to police, and she told the BAR that she had alerted other people working in the neighbhorhood to be aware that Taito could be violent.

"I have been living in San Francisco for eight years, and the longer I’ve lived here, the more I’ve gotten involved in nightlife, one way or another. A lot of people know me, so when I decided to take the job at Midnight Sun, I never thought something like this would happen," Solis said.

"As a trans woman, I assumed I would be protected and people wouldn’t think to harm me, but it happened," Solis added. "It’s devastating, and I’m angry, and I would like him to be held accountable."

She now tells the BAR that she is glad an arrest was made.

Dave Burke, who works in the office of Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman, said to the BAR, "I want to thank the Midnight Sun for their persistence and cooperation in this matter. Violence has no place in the Castro, and it won’t be tolerated."

Taito reportedly made a court appearance on Thursday, May 28, and agreed to return on his own recognizance for a hearing on June 18.

This incident follows an unrelated incident of violence in the Castro neighborhood on May 18, in which a man with a pro-Charlie Kirk message on his vehicle allegedly assaulted a resident and sprayed a hateful message in graffiti outside a flower shop. That's when he's alleged to have hit a Recology semitruck, sending both vehicles into the off-ramp sandbags.

The truck was able to stop but tragically the Camaro's momentum catapulted it over the railing and into an SFPD impound lot 25 feet below. KTVU reports that the Camaro then "struck several other vehicles and flipped onto its roof," ultimately landing atop another car. While the driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own, San Francisco Fire Department personnel had to make a lengthy effort with the Jaws of Life to free the two passengers in the back seat.

One, an 18-year-old, was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The other, a boy of 17 found not to be wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 1:50am. Both the driver and front seat passenger were taken to a local hospital for moderate injuries while the Recology truck driver reportedly sustained no major injuries in the crash.

The accident left three lanes of I-80 and the off-ramp closed for several hours, eventually reopening at 5:45 a.m. CHP further noted that they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved at this time and shared that both drivers are currently cooperating with authorities.

Related: Garbage Truck Strikes, Critically Injures SF Woman

Image: Google Maps

SF Man Charged In 27 Separate Walgreens Thefts In SF; Other Alleged Prolific Retail Thieves Also Nabbed

The San Francisco Police Department Organized Retail Crime Task Force on Thursday announced the arrests of and charges against five individuals accused of prolific retail thievery in the city.

SF News

walgreens

retail theft

crime

Jay Barmann

The San Francisco Police Department Organized Retail Crime Task Force on Thursday announced the arrests of and charges against five individuals accused of prolific retail thievery in the city.

The most prolific of the accused group is 24-year-old Tyrese Boswell, who according to police targeted two Walgreens locations, in North Beach and Noe Valley, on 27 separate occasions, stealing nearly $40,000 in cosmetics and other merchandise.

Boswell's initial arrest came on December 24, 2025, at which point he was accused of burglarizing the Walgreens at 1175 Columbus Avenue in North Beach a total of 18 times. Following his release, Boswell allegedly continued his pattern of retail theft at a different Walgreens, this one at 1333 Castro Street in Noe Valley. The SFPD task force says that Boswell "was engaged in a week-long theft spree that led to a second arrest on April 4, 2026," and in that spree he reportedly hit the Noe Valley store on seven separate occasions.

After being arrested and released again pending a new court date, Boswell returned to the same Noe Valley Walgreens and allegedly robbed it two more times, getting arrested for a third time on April 16, 2026.

He's facing nine counts of felony second-degree burglary, as well as seven counts of grand theft, along with seven counts of petty theft with prior convictions.

Another alleged thief who targeted the Polk Street Walgreens, 36-year-old Faniel Rusher, was arrested on April 29 in connection with over a dozen retail thefts, as well as violation of a stay-away order that stemmed from earlier thefts at the same store.

Additionally, the retail crime task force announced the arrests of two women, identified as 33-year-old Jacqueline Michael and 35-year-old Darlene Gilbert. The pair is accused of stealing around $3,200 worth of merchandise, primarily meat, seafood, and produce, from one or more Safeway locations across 14 separate incidents. These incidents occurred between January 1, 2026 and April 1, 2026. Both women were arrested in early April, and then re-arrested in early May following alleged repeated theft incidents.

The task force also announced charges against 38-year-old Stanley Young, who is accused in a series of petty thefts at unnamed coffee shops on the 100 block of Sutter Street, the 400 block of Grant Street, and the 1600 block of Noriega Avenue.

Rampant retail thefts clearly continue in some parts of the city despite these not making headlines as much as they did during the "doom loop" narrative days of three years ago.

The SFPD says that "ORC Task Force investigators are maintaining robust partnerships with local retailers to effectively investigate these cases."

Previously: 16 People Named in Alleged $400,000 Santa Clara County TJ Maxx Theft Ring

Photo via Google Street View

Arizona Man Arrested In Check-Washing Scheme That Targeted Napa Residents

Dozens of Napa County homeowners now have some answers as to why their property tax payments had not made it to the county tax collector this spring, and/or why the checks were getting deposited in other states.

SF News

fraud

napa county

crime

property taxes

Jay Barmann

Dozens of Napa County homeowners now have some answers as to why their property tax payments had not made it to the county tax collector this spring, and/or why the checks were getting deposited in other states.

The first piece of the puzzle has arrived in a mysterious case involving property tax checks that were disappearing in Napa County. Authorities say that nearly 50 Napa homeowners who used paper checks and the US mail to pay their property taxes had those checks stolen out of the mail, "washed," and desposited into accounts in multiple states.

ABC 7 first reported on the checks disappearing last month, when Napa County Treasurer and Tax Collector Robert Minahen put out an alert that around $1.5 million had been stolen in this fraud scheme.

In one case, a Napa vineyard owner cut a sizeable check for $225,000 which later had its payee information altered to a Florida LLC, and deposted there.

The FBI got involved, and they just announced an arrest that was made back in April in Phoenix, where at least a few of the checks had been deposited into one man's account there.

That suspect has been identified as Ricco Jackson, and as ABC 7 reports, he was arrested after he showed up at his bank to ask why his account had been frozen. Jackson allegedly deposited five checks into the account of a fake LLC in Phoenix, totaling $103,000. Jackson will now head to trial in federal court in August.

The investigation is continuing, and more arrests are likely to follow. The FBI believes that this is partly an inside job involving someone working for the US Postal Service who is intercepting mail in a targeted fashion.

As Minahan tells ABC 7, "I think you have somebody locally who's doing the stealing, somebody within the Bay Area between the Oakland post office, postal facility processing, and our office. And, they're then disseminating these stolen checks throughout the country."

In addition to Phoenix, stolen and washed checks have been deposited so far in Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina.

Minahan said that all but one bank had issued reimbursements to customers, and those have totaled $1.4 million to date. And he's encouraging everyone to pay their property taxes online instead of by mail.

A similar scheme, which appears to have remained unsolved, was happening last year in Santa Clara County. ABC 7's 7 On Your Side spoke to one San Jose property owner, Paul Glaser, whose $28,000 property tax check was stolen and cashed late last year, and as of February, his bank, Wells Fargo, was refusing to reimburse him.

Monday Night Stabbing Leaves One Man Critically Injured Near Sixth Street

A man was stabbed Monday night on an alley off Sixth Street in SF's SoMa, and his injuries were said to be life-threatening.

SF News

stabbings

crime

sixth street

Jay Barmann

A man was stabbed Monday night on an alley off Sixth Street in SF's SoMa, and his injuries were said to be life-threatening.

The stabbing occurred around 10:15 pm Monday on the 400 block of Stevenson Street, an alley that runs parallel to Market Street between 5th and 6th streets. As the Associated Press reports, agents spent several hours at the home, and it's not yet clear what they may have found there.

Moreno-Gama is facing multiple charges including attempted murder and attempted arson, and he is accused both of trying to kill Altman as well as a security guard. Her family says police need to investigate the case further.

25-year-old Nation Wood was days away from leaving town, heading for basic training to join the Army National Guard, when he was allegedly "dry-firing" a handgun aimed at a wall in his apartment. His on-again off-again girlfriend, 22-year-old Samantha Emge, had just moved her stuff into his apartment, which he was handing over to her to live in, rent-free, while he was gone. She was on the other side of that wall, taking a shower.

A single bullet, which Wood allegedly did not know was in the chamber or magazine, penetrated the wall and a medicine cabinet and struck Emge in the head.

San Francisco police almost immediately tried to cast the incident as an accidental death, which on the surface it would seem to be. And within days, Wood would be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

But as the Chronicle reports, Emge's family is raising alarms about Wood, and about the relationship the young couple had in the months leading up to the shooting, which should cast some doubt on the clear-cut accident narrative.

Emge and Wood reportedly met on the SF State campus in December 2023, and Emge's family said their relationship was marked by several breakups and reconciliations, and that some of their tensions stemmed from Wood's problematic drinking. Also, friends of Emge say that Wood was clearly a controlling presence, who would impose arbitrary "curfews" on his girlfriend, even though they did not live together, and would text and call frequently if she was out somewhere without him.

The couple had most recently broken up in December 2025, but had reconciled again — according to Emge's mother, "I think her heart just bled for him."

Emge's family tells the Chronicle she had seemed "calmer" in recent months, after Wood decided to join the National Guard, enlisting in January, and was planning to relocate to Missouri for basic training. While he'd be paying the rent on his apartment during his absence, he had offered it to Emge so she could save money, and he'd reportedly moved his things into storage so that she could redecorate.

Wood is being represented by high-powered defense attorney Paula Canny — who was the original defense lawyer for Nima Momeni in the Bob Lee stabbing case — which in itself could be an indicator of the complications involved in this case. According to Canny, in a court filing, Wood had been sober for 15 months, at least to his family's knowledge, at the time of the shooting. And, Canny said, the case did not involve domestic violence in any traditional sense.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins gave a statement to the Chronicle, regarding the family's concerns, saying, "My office will continue to do everything we can to support [Emge's family] and seek justice in the courthouse for them... If any new evidence comes to light that is admissible in court and sufficient to meet our burden of proof, we may seek to file an amended complaint to reflect more or different charges from what was initially charged."

We likely won't learn much more about the case until it goes to trial, and we may never know what transpired in the apartment in the hours before the shooting took place. Wood has reportedly been checked into a psychiatric facility after alleged suicidal threats.

Previously: Suspect Says He Was 'Dry-Firing' Gun When 22-Year-Old Samantha Emge Was Killed

Video: SFPD Uses Drone to Track Robbery/Auto Burglary Suspects, Four Suspects Arrested

San Francisco police, looking to show off the drone technology that has been helping them to make arrests without engaging in unsafe chases, just released drone video of one recent pursuit and arrest.

SF News

crime

car break-ins

sfpd

drones

Jay Barmann

San Francisco police, looking to show off the drone technology that has been helping them to make arrests without engaging in unsafe chases, just released drone video of one recent pursuit and arrest.

The incident began with a mugging at a bus stop in the Sunset District. Officers were called to the scene of the 2200 block of Irving Street on the afternoon of April 1, after two suspects approached a female victim at the bus stop, snatched her purse and assaulted her, and fled into a waiting vehicle.

According to a release from the SFPD, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and police soon learned that a vehicle of the same description was allegedly involved in two auto burglaries at the Legion of Honor parking lot.

An SFPD drone was then able to locate the vehicle at the Palace of Fine Arts parking lot — another hot spot for bipping — where police say they observed the suspects casing vehicles and committing two more auto burglaries.

"As the vehicle fled the area, plainclothes officers maintained surveillance and developed an apprehension plan to safely take the suspects into custody," the department explains. The vehicle likely had to head down Lombard in order to get to the Bay Bridge,

The vehicle was subsequently disabled using spike strips near the intersection of Van Ness and Lombard, and as the suspects continued trying to flee, they were involved in three separate minor vehicle collisions, as seen in the video below.

The suspects' vehicle, now with flat tires, was unable to get uphill on Lombard east of Van Ness, and the suspects all jumped out without putting it in park, leaving it to roll backwards and cause another minor collision.

All four suspects tried to flee the area on foot, with two quickly arrested by police, and the other two apprehended following a foot pursuit.

A search of the vehicle turned up burglary tools as well as stolen property from the Irving Street incident, the Legion of Honor burglaries, and the Palace of Fine Arts burglaries, police say.

The suspects have been identified as 25-year-old Charles Eason of San Francisco, 22-year-old Jamaul Mullins of Pittsburg, 18-year-old Major Skinner of Oakland, and 25-year-old Daija Bartholomew of Antioch. They were booked on multiple charges including second-degree burglary, second-degree robbery, elder abuse, and possession of stolen property.

While arrests have been made, this is still an active investigation. There was, in fact, a 250% uptick in homicides, year over year, and SF Police Chief Derrick Lew is trying to emphasize that other types of crime remain down.

SFist has been tracking the alarming frequency of homicides in the city since early January, with an average of almost one killing per week happening in the first 10 weeks of the year. This followed on a year of record-low homicides in San Francisco, when the city saw fewer murders than any year since 1954.

SFPD Chief Derrick Lew addressed the sudden uptick at a presentation to the SF Police Commission last week, as the Chronicle is reporting, and he was trying to downplay the issue by showing that overall gun violence remains flat. Also, he said, the number car burglaries continues to decline, and crimes like assault and robbery are both down compared to last year's first quarter — by 10% and 33% respectively.

The gun violence stat appears to just be through January 2026, and the point Lew appeared to be making was that the same number of people are being shot, but more of those shootings have proved fatal in the first three months of this year. So, shooters just had better aim?

The homicide statistic on its own is alarming, given that homicides overall have been trending downward nationwide, as well as in San Francisco, since the first year of the pandemic. And if the trend holds past the first quarter, it puts the city on track to see the first uptick in homicides since 2021.

Doubly alarming is President Trump's casual recent mention that San Francisco's crime situation isn't improving fast enough.

"San Francisco. What a great city it was. A great city. Could quickly become a great city again. But, you know, they're going very slowly," Trump said, possibly inspired by longtime conservative and fellow sexual harasser Bill O'Reilly's strange NewsNation special shot during Super Bowl weekend, which aired the same day as Trump's comment.

Trump was originally gearing up to have federal agents invade the city back in October, when all crime stats were, in reality, down. But this is just political theater, of course, and part of his revenge campaign against progressive cities, and facts don't matter — that is, until, there's a provable fact like the current homicide uptick that aids his cause.

Chief Lew suggests that the SFPD will be doing more to get guns off the streets, in the hope of bringing the shooting stat down. And the department will otherwise be continuing its strategies that have brought other crime stats down, because "it’s worked."

Previously: San Francisco Now Averaging One Homicide Per Week In 2026, With Latest on Sixth Street

Photo via SFPD/YouTube

Three Tennessee Men Arrested In Connection With Crypto Heist Near Dolores Park

Three arrests have been made and authorities are reportedly still looking for the criminal or criminals in charge of a crypto theft ring that allegedly plotted "wrench attacks" on multiple holders of cryptocurrency fortunes on the West Coast.

SF News

cryptocurrency

thieves

robberies

crime

home invasions

Jay Barmann

Three arrests have been made and authorities are reportedly still looking for the criminal or criminals in charge of a crypto theft ring that allegedly plotted "wrench attacks" on multiple holders of cryptocurrency fortunes on the West Coast.

Three Tennessee men have been arrested in connection with a November home-invasion robbery at a home near Dolores Park, where a man posing a package delivery person strong-armed his way into the home and violently assaulted a victim until he revealed passwords to multiple crypto accounts. The thief, who appeared to be working other remote accomplices, reportedly made off with $13 million in cryptocurrency, and it's unclear if any of that has been recovered.

The Chronicle now reports that the three suspects, working with a higher-level ringleader or multiple ringleaders, are suspected in a string of crypto robbery plots, with the November theft in San Francisco being the only successful one. The trio conducted or attempted multiple so-called wrench attacks — named for this web comic that jokes about the most practical way to steal a person's crypto wealth involves a $5 wrench and violence — in Sunnyvale, San Jose, and Los Angeles, all around the same time as the SF incident.

The three suspects have been identified as 21-year-old Nino Chindavanh, Elijah Armstrong, and Jayden Rucker — both of whose ages haven't been publicized — who are all residents of Tennessee and clearly working together. Rucker's wallet was allegedly found by police in a car being driven by Chindavanh after he was arrested in Sunnyvale following an alleged attack there on December 22. And Armstrong and Rucker were arrested together in Los Angeles the week after Christmas after a foiled home invasion there.

Per the Chronicle report, which comes from police documents and sources close to the investigation, the trio used the same basic methods in all of the attacks. They or their higher-ups allegedly hacked into the victims' UberEats or DoorDash accounts, after identifying the victims as holders of large crypto sums. They then would pick up similar food or beverage orders from the businesses involved and make deliveries to the victims' homes when they were expecting them.

In the case of the San Francisco plot, two pizzas were found outside the victim's home, which were part of some backup plan, because the suspect in that case succeeded in getting the victim to the door with a fake UPS delivery instead. As we learned in a February report, the suspect, after binding the victim with duct tape, contacted another man with a reportedly raspy voice on the phone who gave instructions for logging into the victim's accounts and transferring funds — a total of $13 million.

In the Los Angeles incident in late December, the suspect brought a package to the victim's Brentwood home, and while at the door, asked if he could have a glass a water. The victim complied, and the suspect followed him into the house, pointed a gun at him, and bound him in zip ties, demanding his crypto passwords.

A second suspect arrived, and as happened in the San Francisco attack, the pair called a third operative over the phone who gave instructions about logging into the crypto account. According to police, the other operative may have been using a voice modulator to disguise their voice, and they became angry when it appeared that the account they logged into didn't show the real sum they believed the victim to have. This other suspect told the two suspects in the room to cut off the victim's fingers until he gave up his real account, but at that point, the suspects were spooked by a helicopter overhead and fled the house.

The police had, in fact, been called by a female witness who was hiding a pantry, as the Chronicle reports, and this led to the arrests of Rucker and Armstrong.

Chindavanh was arrested after pushing his way into the Sunnyvale victim's home with a DoorDash coffee order, and brandishing a gun. The victim in that case pushed back, and Chindavanh, only to be arrested by Santa Clara County

As we learned earlier, authorities have linked at least one of the phone numbers used in the San Francisco heist to a Washington state man who has not been publicly identified, but who apparently has a "long history of criminal charges." That man be in fact be the ringleader of the operation, who employed lower-level operatives to conduct the riskiest aspects of the crimes.

As the Chronicle notes, the nature of crypto allows authorities to theoretically trace any transactions that have taken place, and to recover stolen sums, though it's not clear that this has happened yet in this case.

All together, the cases highlight the vulnerability of those who hold crypto wealth, and whose identities can be easily traced to that wealth.

Previously: Details Emerge In November Home Invasion Crypto Robbery In SF

Top image: Doorbell camera footage of the masked suspect in the San Francisco case.

Stabbing In Broad Daylight In SF's Chinatown Leaves One Man Critically Injured

A seemingly unprovoked stabbing Thursday afternoon in San Francisco's Chinatown left one male victim with life-threatening injuries. Police have arrested a suspect.

The attack took place at the corner of Stockton and Sacramento streets in Chinatown around 1:13 pm Thursday. The SFPD responded to the scene and found the male victim suffering from a stab wound to the back.

KRON4 subsequently obtained surveillance video that shows the attacker, dressed in a black hoodie and carrying a shopping bag, approach the victim who was waiting at the intersection to cross the street. The shooting occurred around 1:30 am on the 100 block of Sixth Street, which would be the block between Mission and Howard streets.

The victim was reportedly transported to an area hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

No information has been shared about the victim or any potential suspect.

This is SF's ninth homicide of the year to date, and as we've noted previously, the pace of murders in the city has been unsually rapid in the opening two months of the year.

The city saw only 28 homicides in all of 2025, the lowest in SF since the year 1954 — when the city had about 60,000 fewer residents than it has now. That represents a little more than two killings per month, and January and February of 2026 have already outpaced that nearly 100%.

Last week saw a fatal drive-by shooting in Potrero Hill in which one person was killed and two others were injured.

Nob Hill Robbery and Assault Victim Dies, Suspect Now Facing Homicide Charge

San Francisco just notched another homicide in what has been an unusually violent start to the year, after a man who was attacked and robbed earlier this month just succumbed to his injuries.

SF News

homicides

homicide count

Nob Hill

crime

Jay Barmann

San Francisco just notched another homicide in what has been an unusually violent start to the year, after a man who was attacked and robbed earlier this month just succumbed to his injuries.

The alleged robbery and assault occurred on February 5 on Nob Hill, in the area of Bush and Taylor streets. The male victim, who has not been publicly identified, was found with life-threatening injuries, and police have since identified a suspect, who was arrested last week.

Update: The SF District Attorney's Office explains, in a release, that police obtained surveillance video showing the suspect "swing a long object consistent with a wooden board or pole at the victim’s head," and "The victim fell and then the defendant walked away carrying the victim’s bag."

As KPIX reports, at 11:40 am on February 19, SFPD officers detained 34-year-old Eduardo Cruz Vivero on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Vivero, who also had an outstanding warrant in San Mateo County, was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of assault, robbery, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.

Two days later, on February 21, the victim died from his injuries in a San Francisco hospital, and a possible homicide charge has been added to Vivero's booking record.

Charges in the case have not yet been filed by the San Francisco DA's office, and no motive or other details have been publicly identified by police.

This is San Francisco's seventh homicide to date in 2026, meaning that the city has added nearly one homicide for each week of the new year. Last year saw a record low number of homicides, the lowest since the early 1950s, and by this point in February 2025 the city had only seen one homicide.

Top image: Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Details Emerge In November Home Invasion Crypto Robbery In SF

We now have a few more details about what exactly happened at the home near Dolores Park in late November where a man was assaulted and tied up inside his home while a home invader, who posed as a delivery person, robbed him of $13 million in cryptocurrency.

SF News

crime

Jay Barmann

We now have a few more details about what exactly happened at the home near Dolores Park in late November where a man was assaulted and tied up inside his home while a home invader, who posed as a delivery person, robbed him of $13 million in cryptocurrency.

It was a sophisticated and seemingly well planned heist that went down on November 22 at a home near 18th and Dolores. The male suspect approached the house fully masked, and obscured his face from a surveillance camera. He asked at the door for a "Joshua," said he had a package delivery, and then asked for a pen so that the victim could sign for the package. When the victim turned inside to locate a pen, the suspect forced his way into the door, shut the door, and assaulted the victim.

According to a police report and an interview with the victim, obtained by the Chronicle this week, the victim says he landed a punch on the suspect before the suspect punched him so hard he fell to the ground. He was then ordered, at gunpoint, to tie his ankles with duct tape, and the suspect then allegedly bound his wrists as well.

A surveillance image of the hooded and masked suspect.

The victim then heard, as he lay face-down in his living room, as the suspect got on possibly a threeway phone call, in which a man with a raspy voice gave instructions. The suspect then forced the victim to allow him access to his phone, and to a crypto wallet containing $3 million in Ethereum coin. The raspy-voiced man instructed the suspect how to transfer the funds out of the wallet, and then said there was $10 million more in Bitcoin on a laptop — information that, according to the victim, was publicly available.

The initial reports suggested the total stolen was $11 million, not $13 million.

Police believe that the victim's home was being cased for hours before the home invasion occurred around 5 pm. The victim told police that he noticed two pizza boxes outside his home after the crime occurred, and he had not ordered these, and police found that phone orders had been placed to a local restaurant for pizza — one around noon and one around 2:40 pm — which were paid for by credit card and delivered to the victim's address.

The victim also had received calls from a Los Angeles area number that day saying that someone was trying to deliver a package to him.

There seem to be two burner cell phone accounts that were created one day before, on December 21 — and the suspect may have given himself away by using one of the burner phones to text a male escort service some hours before the crime. There was also, as the Chronicle reports from the investigation, a link between one of the cell accounts and an email associated with a known criminal from the Washington state area. That man isn't being named because he has not been charged with any crime here and has not been named as a suspect or person of interest in this case — though the FBI, which is involved in the case, may begin naming names soon.

Reportedly, that Washington state man has a "long history of criminal charges," and was even charged with a crime two days after the SF robbery occurred.

The victim still has not been publicly identified, however a report in November indicated that he was the housemate and/or boyfriend of Lachy Groom, an ex of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Y Combinator's Garry Tan, who also lives in the neighborhood, said the victim was a friend of his and posted the doorbell camera surveillance video to Xitter in the days after the crime, though has since deleted it.

Previously: Report: SF Home Hit by $11 Million Crypto Theft Owned By Sam Altman’s Ex
