This Sunday, the fourth annual Bottomless Negroni and Pimp Cup Competition goes down at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen. If you're crafty and clever enough, you could win endless Negroni cocktails* for an entire year. Which is pretty damn boss.

To jog your memory, here's how it works: create the most inventive chalice, win all the glory. Last year, contestants and patrons voted on tricked-out collection of cups -- one created out of legos, another was unicorn-ed out. It was fabulous. (And while the name "pimp cup" is in the event title, we implore you not to go with a literal pimp theme. It's a touch tired at this point -- which won't win you enough votes, anyway -- but pimps also bring to mind sex trafficking and worse.)

Our favorite from last year was this last-minute gem. (No wait, this one was our favorite.) Here are last year's entries and winners. The winner takes home the coveted prize of a free Negroni every day for a year at Jasper's.

To enter the contest, you must buy a ticket for $20 pre-sale (through eventbrite) or $25 at the door. Ticket price, going to benefit the Bartender Relief Fund, also scores you bottomless Negronis.

Goes from 3:30pm-5:30pm on Sunday, August 4th.

* If you do win, you still need to tip your bartender when you use your cup for free Negronis throughout your reign. Don't be a dick.

Hi Lo, A16, RN74 Chefs To Compete In Cochon 555

2013 marks the fifth year of Cochon 555, a competition that pits five local chefs against one another to prepare a menu concocted from the entirety of heritage breed pigs.
San Francisco announced the 20 recipients of the upcoming Rainbow Honor Walk installation — think Hollywood Walk of Fame, only vastly more important — last year. The installation wil stretch from the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy on 19th Street at Diamond down to Castro, continuing up to Market and along 18th Street and over near the LGBT Center at Octavia Boulevard. But they need someone to create a superb design to compliment the honor and people it commemorate. Might that someone be you?

The contest, running from February 2 - May 2, 2012, will ask for designs from around the world. So get creative — a trite Diego Riveraesque mishmash or a rainbow will simply not do. Four finalists will be selected, judged by a jury of curators from San Francisco’s leading cultural institutions as well as LGBT community leaders and a member of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Civic Design Committee.

The winner designer will receive an honorarium of $1,000. And glory. Lots of glory.

"The Rainbow Honor Walk will not only be an inspiring educational tool for future generations, but an important, ongoing and permanent part of San Francisco’s cultural landscape," said Tom DeCaigny, newly crowned Director of Cultural Affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission. "We are honored and pleased to support this project, and look forward to assisting in any way we can."

Our suggestion, brilliant in its simplicity and honesty, is a shiny golden poppers bottle. Toot, toot, yeah, beep, beep, and so forth.

Details are as follows:

Design parameters:
1) Designs must include the name of the individual to be honored, their birth and death dates, and a brief description of their contributions
2) Size: 3 feet wide x 3 feet long (depth to be determined based upon engineering recommendations)
3) Materials: bronze and/or terrazzo

Individuals and/or design teams interested in participating in the design competition should contact the Rainbow Honor Walk by mail. Each submission must include:
1) A $100 non-refundable submission fee payable to “The Rainbow Honor Walk.” *
2) A one page description (no more than 500 words) of why this design is appropriate along with the qualifications of the designer.
3) A CD with documentation of completed and installed public artwork or similar projects. No more than three (3) projects should be submitted although there may be multiple images of each project from different perspectives to show the design, the materials and the context in which the work is located. A maximum of 10 jpeg images may be submitted.
4) One 1 foot by 1 foot color design concept in the format of a drawing, painting or photo montage. Actual fabricated models will not be accepted. Please do not deviate from the standard submission format. Applicants may only submit one design.
5) The applicant agrees to allow the Rainbow Honor Walk to use the images of his/her submission for promotional, educational and informational purposes.
6) The winning applicant will be required to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Rainbow Honor Walk organization to allow her/his design to be implemented and to agree to consult on details related to the materials utilized for fabrication of the Walk of Fame plaques.

* The submission fee will be waived for one student from each school in the San Francisco Unified School District, to be determined by that school.

For us, nothing is more Californian than Mexican food. So I was very excited to attend The Great Salsa Championchip hosted by SF Food Wars this last Sunday. The competition is a partnership between Food Wars and CUESA to showcase some of SF's best salsa makers.

Two men enter, one man leaves!

Actually, twenty different chefs entered and the rest of us just left stuffed. The competition took place downtown at the Ferry Building along with 300 attendees all armed with organic tortilla chips by Casa Sanchez. The twenty teams, along with a description of there entry can be found below.

Purveyors of Awesome / Gravensalsa / Gravenstein apple salsa with a bit of heat.

DoomBunny en Fuego / Ceviche Verdura / A vegetarian ceviche with roasted corn.

Devórate Esto / My Mama's Salsa / A classic tomato salsa that is well balanced.

The Average Foodie / Summer Sweet, Summer Spice - Part Deux / Peach and pear salsa.

bangbangsalsa / salsa #9 / This three alarm fire is made with roasted habaneros.

Los Pares Deliciosos / Veraniega Sabrosa / Slightly sweet salsa with a hint of red wine.

El Charapo / Gutsy Red / A classic roasted salsa with a nice amount of garlic and veggies.

Ai Made It / GazPOWcho Salsa / Homegrown tomatoes make this salsa gaspacho-like.

Here are the first 8 salsas. Start with the #1 and move clockwise where #8, the GazPOWcho Salsa, is in the middle. Of this batch, I really enjoyed #7 (Gutsy Red) and #5 (Veraniega Sabrosa) the most. I thought the ceviche salsa was good but in my opinion it was less of a salsa and more of a salad with all of the toppings it had.

Chi-Wow-Wow / El Niño / A family recipe from Chihuahua, Mexico.

Team Hellapeños / Salsa Delfina / Mexican salsa recipe from Grandma Delfina.

Team Steph / Salsa de Nino / A salsa recipe passed down by the chef's Godfather.

Dammit Tina! / Dammit! I Forgot the Salsa Again / Early girl-based Pico de Gallo salsa.

Spice Girls / When Harissa Met Salsa / Roasted tomatoes and North African spices.

(y)our food choices / Salsa-touille / Ratatouille-inspired salsa.

Desi Girls / Kuchumber / Salsa with an Indian spin.

Huuyub / Green Monster / A cilantro-based salsa with lots of roasted tomatoes.

Chip trick / Chilesco Salsa / Mexican salsa with the smooth texture of Catalan Romesco.

Dr. Peppers / Belly-Warmin' Salsa / A mix of fire-roasted peppers and lots of love.

Iron Bunny / Salsa Pine-a-peño / Grilled pineapple and jalapeno salsa.

At then end of it all, we chose Salsa Pine-a-peño. We love tropical fruit-based salsas but usually they are too sweet. This particular salsa, however, could be eaten by the buckets. Well, we could anyway. Alas, it was not the winner of the competition.

Wanna know who won? Find out here.

This year's annual bacchanalia of pork and wine, Cochon 555, rears its savory head on Sunday, June 5. Will you be there? Well, you should. "Officially, the event is all about promoting heritage pig breeds and blah blah blah, but clearly for most, it's a chance for indulging their unadulterated pork passions and eat a lot of bacon," explains Grub Street.

And as far as this year's competition goes? We would swallow whatever these gentlemen put before us. They're that talented.

This year’s San Francisco competitors are David Varley of Michael Mina; Ravi Kapur of Prospect; Brandon Jew and Salvatore Cracco of Bar Agricole; our personal favorite SF chef, Matthew Accarrino of SPQR; and the eyelid-rippingly hot David Bazirgan of Fifth Floor.

Casting his blinding light of judgment on the evening's porcine party is none other than SFist's Jay Barmann. (Psst, he's also the man behind Grub Street SF. He's well versed in culinary thingamajigs like meat and thyme bundles and the proper way to fold napkin swans and bain-maries... you know, stuff like that.) He's already told you in explicit detail why California should turn into an early primary state and he just read this crazy techie-hippie to filth. So, you know, Cochon 555 competing chefs better be en pointe, dig?

Barmann joins the following local foodies turned judges:

Andy Peay, Peay Vineyards
Anthony Strong, Locanda
Caleb Zigas, La Cocina
Carleigh Connolly, Culinary Trends magazine
Dave McClean, Magnolia Brew
John Fink, The Whole Beast
Mark Dommen, One Market
Pax Mahle, Wind Gap Wines
Staffan Terje, Perbacco

Since the economy is down the bidet, now more than every before folks are getting by and a few slices of American Cheese and buttered bread set to a sizzling, non-stick pan. So this year's Grilled Cheese Invitational promises to be its most creative yet.

The NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational, for those of you not in the know, is an official sandwich competition with trophies awarded for three different categories of competitive Grilled Cheese. All are welcome to attend the competition and judge which sandwich is tops

The rules for making the sandwiches, according to grilledcheeseinvitational.com, are simple.

Bread: Any leavened or unleavened, flour-based and baked thing that looks like bread, you idiot.

Butter: For the purposes of simplicity, all sammich-grilling lubricants will be hereafter referred to as "Butter." You can use oils or margarines if you prefer, but make sure it fits within the sammich category you've chosen. FLAVORED BUTTERS AND OILS (MAYONNAISE, INFUSED WITH GARLIC, ETC.) ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE MISSIONARY POSITION CATEGORY.

Cheese: Made from milk, be it mother's, goat, cow, cat, rabbit, soy, or almonds (although why would you make a grilled cheese with almond cheese? Bleahhh!).

Oh, and another thing, they ask you not to burn the place down. "No flame-throwers! Yes, this means you. No ice-melters, Molotov cocktails, you name it. If you bring something that even vaguely resembles a flame-thrower you WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE." Whoa.

The exact location will be announced, but it will be held in SF on Feb 21. <s>Registration is now open</s>. Bah! It's closed. But have no fear. People cancel all the time, so there's a good chance you can still enter. Email capnshady@mac.com to get on the waiting list.

Until then, allow us to whet your appetite with your editor's favorite grilled cheese recipe, The Comfort Diner's 'Boursin Cheese and Bacon,' which you can find after the jump.

San Francisco Rubik's Cube Competition Results

SF Weekly is positively livid this morning that local media outlets previewed the 2009 Rubik's Cub...

SF News

competition

games

Bay Area Sports

Brock Keeling

SF Weekly is positively livid this morning that local media outlets previewed the 2009 Rubik's Cube Competition, but failed to publish said competition's esults.
Puzzle fans and '80s fanatics, listen up. On Sunday the San Francisco Open 2009 Rubik's Cube Competition goes down at the Exploratorium. The competition is open to competitors of all skill levels, and anyone who knows how to solve a cube (i..e, match up all the pretty colors) is encouraged to attend, compete. But even if you can't solve the famed puzzle, you should still stop by and watch as competitors try breaking world records.

The main events sound daunting yet thrilling: 3x3x3 Speedsolve, 3x3x3 One-Handed, 3x3x3 Blindfolded, 4x4x4 Speedsolve, and 5x5x5 Speedsolve, And the side competitions include such Rubik's Cube derivatives as Rubik's Magic, Master Magic, 4x4x4 Blindfolded, 5x5x5 Blindfolded, 3x3x3 Multiple Blindfolded, Square-1, Rubik's Clock, and Pyraminx. Whew. (To check out the competition schedule, go here. To register to compete, right here.)

Oh, and competitors should bring their own cubes to compete with. Or bring any extras to share.

With a bevy of corpses available for you to express yourselves, which one will you choose?

In addition to the "Thriller" dance record-breaking attempt at Dolores Park, Saturday's Antiwar march, starting at Civic Center at 11 a.m., will end up smack-dab at the same recreational area. Once there, the "Fall Out Against the War" marchers (another worldwide event happening on the same day) will stage a (symbolic) die-in "to bring home the 2 million Iraqis who have died, the 500,000 who are now refugees, and the nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers who have died for an occupation that only benefits weapons manufacturers and oil corporations."

That's a lot of dead bodies scattered around DP this Saturday. Mind your step.
