BottleRock beat them to the punch by a day, but now Coachella's organizers have unveiled the lineup for 2023's dual-weekend fest in the desert — the first lineup in three years that is a wholly new bill and not a cobbled-together lineup of rescheduled acts from a COVID-canceled festival.

We already knew shortly after the 2022 iteration that Frank Ocean — who was originally booked as a headliner for the canceled 2020 Coachella — would be headlining this one. But now the rest of the lineup has been revealed ahead of the Friday presale date, though there's a "loyalty presale" that starts tomorrow (1/11) for purchasers of 2022 passes — and likely because of people who previously purchased passes for one of the last two canceled Coachellas and rolled them over, the organizers say that already "very limited Weekend 1 passes remain."

Bad Bunny will headline Friday, Blackpink headlines Saturday, and Ocean will headline on Sunday of the two weekends, which are April 14-16 and 21-23. Other notable acts include Björk — who headlined Coachella in 2002 and 2007 — Christine and the Queens, Rosalía, Gorillaz, Charli XCX, the Breeders, Chromeo, Underworld, Noname, Soul Glo, Yaeji, Willow, Saba, Romy (of the xx), Muna, Metro Boomin, Idris Elba, and Kali Uchis.

Calvin Harris is listed as "returning to the desert" but it looks like they may not have gotten a commitment from him for specific dates.

And, 80s greats and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Blondie will be playing in the Friday lineup as well.

While Bay Area music festivals Outside Lands and BottleRock are forging ahead in the fall, Coachella won't be following suit. Organizers announced Tuesday that the desert fest will take another year off and return to its regularly scheduled dual April weekends in 2022.

Goldenvoice, which has been putting on the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio since 1999, had tried to reschedule last year's fest to October 2020, ultimately deciding last June to cancel it and aim for this spring. When COVID cases began exploding around Southern California in the fall, particularly in Riverside County and nearby Imperial County, Goldenvoice decided to postpone again, intending to put on the festival in October 2021.

But in the months since that decision, we haven't heard any confirmation of a lineup or any further word from organizers about the October plans. Meanwhile, the state seems OK with having "mega events" like this after June 15, but not without restrictions — outdoor events with more than 10,000 people would have to check attendees' vaccination status and/or require a negative COVID test to attend.

It's not clear why Coachella couldn't happen, or if Riverside County health officials played a role in the latest postponement.

Passes for Coachella 2022, which is happening April 15-17 and 22-24, go on sale Friday, June 4 at 10 a.m. You can pre-register for the advance sale now.

Presumably, passes purchased for the 2020 festival will continue to roll over to 2022, though that has not been made clear in the FAQs.

No lineup has been announced. The original headliners for last year's festival were Frank Ocean, Rage Against the Machine, and Travis Scott.

The high-probability guess that Coachella might get cancelled due to coronavirus fears goes back more than a week, and after the cancellation of South by Southwest it became more of a screaming rumor.

Now, according to Billboard, we should know within 48 hours if some last-ditch talks between promoter Goldenvoice and Riverside County officials have been successful to reschedule both Coachella and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival to October. County officials as well as those from the town of Indio are rumored to be negotiating the possible rescheduling to the fall, though they may also just decide to pull the festival's permit altogether, per Billboard.

The new Coachella weekends, if confirmed, would be October 9 and October 16. Stagecoach would then happen on the weekend of October 23.

Update: The news has been confirmed by Goldenvoice, though they have not confirmed if the lineup of Coachella will be exactly the same.

New York Magazine journalist Yashir Ali appears to have first broken the news around 7 p.m. Monday on Twitter. He says that the same lineup is already confirmed to perform. (Though Billboard notes the huge logistical challenge of rescheduling the entire lineup.)

Variety still says the festivals are "likely" getting postponed, Pitchfork went with a more certain headline, and Heavy.com is already jumping ahead to ask about refunds for flights.

There are now six confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Riverside County as of Monday, after three new ones were just announced. The escalating crisis in California is moving quicker than in Texas, where the mayor of Austin declared a local emergency and forced the cancelation of SXSW before a single case had been reported in the city. Today, though, a Dell employee who had just visited Austin tested positive for the virus upon returning to India — and there are almost two dozen confirmed cases elsewhere in Texas.

Coachella, which occurs over two weekends in April, is scheduled to start in four weeks. It reportedly brings $1 billion in revenue to the region — $400 million to the Coachella Valley, and $700 million to the metro area.

A petition went up a week ago trying to get the festival cancelled, with Riverside County residents citing the high proportion of senior citizens in the area. That currently has over 17,000 signatures.

In case you were one of the many who had a ticket to Austin next week and were planning to go to South By Southwest, you're not now.

As was predicted by many earlier this week, organizers of the South by Southwest festival have been forced to call off the 34th annual iteration of the event by local officials in Austin — it had been reported earlier that organizers were holding off canceling themselves because collecting insurance on their losses will be easier. The New York Times reports that this is now the biggest casualty of the coronavirus in terms of the cultural calendar, after more than 50,000 people signed a petition to call off the event, and multiple high-profile tech companies including Facebook had pulled out.

Despite the fact that there are still no confirmed cases of the virus in Austin, Mayor Steve Adler gave a press conference Friday declaring a local disaster and forcing the cancellation of SXSW. "Based on the recommendation of our public health officer and director of public health, and after consultation with the city manager, I've gone ahead and declared a local disaster in the city and associated with that, I've issued an order that effectively cancels SXSW for this year," Adler said.

This is the first time in 34 years that the multifaceted, mid-March festival will not go on, and with events going on for 10 days across venues all over the city, this is likely to have a huge impact on Austin's local economy. The festival counted 417,000 attendees in 2019.

But with the first weekend of Coachella now just five weeks away, one has to assume that organizers there are pretty nervous. Forbes reports that "the music industry is already buzzing" about what the next casualties could be, event-wise, as coronavirus panic grips the nation.

One anonymous artist manager tells Forbes that individual shows are starting to be canceled by promoters, and artists are canceling flights into LA to record. "We’re beginning to see it affect the entire music ecosystem,” this person said.

Sure, it's a rarity at any music festival to have a major female headliner, and Beyoncé and Bjork have been exceptions to the rule at Coachella over the years. But after two years in a row when at least one woman was headlining one of the festival's three weekend nights — last year it was Ariana Grande, and in 2018 it was Beyoncé — fans were starting to think maybe the tide had turned.

But no.

This year's Coachella lineup dropped on Friday morning, and in addition to Calvin Harris returning as a headliner after topping the festival's bill in 2016 — though he's actually a small-print, second-fiddle headliner on Friday this year below Rage Against the Machine (who headlined the first Coachella in 1999) — Travis Scott will be headlining the two Saturdays of the fest, and Frank Ocean is the headliner for Sunday. In the smaller-print category, there are a couple of women: Megan Thee Stallion performs Friday, Summer Walker is on Saturday, and Lana Del Rey is on Sunday. And while she may be a headliner for many gay male and teen fans, Carly Rae Jepson doesn't even rank in the top three font tiers of the flier — but she'll be performing on Saturday April 11, and Saturday April 18.

In other novelties, Fatboy Slim will be visiting from the 1990s, Radiohead's Thom Yorke is returning to perform on Saturday, and Lil Nas X will be taking one of the stages on Sunday.

Because Coachella is now a cultural touchstone, especially for Southern Californians, more than a concert, the festival's first weekend sold out before the lineup was even announced. Pre-sales for Weekend Two begin Monday at noon Pacific Time — and you can register now for early access. The festival runs this year from April 10 to 12, and then April 17 to 19.

There’s a ridiculous flood of musical talent arriving in the Bay in the coming weeks, which can only mean one thing: Fauxchella is here y’all!. No, that’s not a typo, but rather an apt descriptor for the two-week stretch in the Bay Area wheren Coachella acts come through the Bay head north. And no, don’t confuse Fauxchella with “Couchella” (that’s when you invite your friends over on Saturday and Sunday to get drunk and watch the Coachella live stream on your TV.) In short, there’s a ridiculous flood of musical talent arriving in the Bay this week.

Sprinkle in some worthy local artists' shows and other touring bands who were coming through the Bay — regardless of Coachella — and you can essentially create your own personalized festival lineup out of it. And while Radiohead’s two shows and New Order’s stop at the Greek Theater are sold out, we’ve gathered a list of shows with tickets still available (see ya, scalpers), to help you build your schedule. What’s best? No long haul into the SoCal desert needed, and you don’t even have to worry about accommodations or sunscreen. Check out the “Stages” below.

The XX w/ Sampha at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium — Monday, April 17

The XX have a three-night stint at Bill Graham in support of their new record, I See You. Whereas the band’s sophomore record couldn’t hold a candle to the debut, there’s a brightness to their third release in the form of delightfully heavy-handed production from Jamie XX. While Saturday and Sunday shows are sold out, tickets are still available for Monday. And what’s best? Sampha is slated to open all three nights. Dude might as well be worth the price of admission alone.

Gucci Mane at The Warfield — Friday, April 21

The self-proclaimed “Trap God” had a show announced on Monday the 17th that promptly sold out. But Gucci is benevolent (and loves money too, obvs) so now you can get tickets for a Friday show on 4/21. Also, a belated engagement congrats to “Mr. & Mrs. Mane.”

Bastille and Mondo Cozmo at The Greek Theater — Sunday, April 23rd

Look, Bastille isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, but I realize there are a lot of you out there who’ve helped fill the massive venues they’ve been selling out on the strength of that one song (400 million+ youtube spins?! Gtfoh.) Opener Mondo Cozmo is on the come up and I love his emotional video for “Hold On To Me” with Anna Faris.

Mitski w/ Kadhja Bonet & Steady Holiday at The Fillmore — Thursday, April 13

Go ahead and file this as Fauxchella’s best all-around bill. Headliner Mitski is an impassioned performer and an important voice in indie, Kadhja Bonet put out one of the most elegant albums of 2016 in The Visitor and Steady Holiday’s nods to French psychedelia have been on repeat for me lately. Don’t miss this one.

Hinds and Twin Peaks at The Chapel — Thursday, April 13th

This is such a cool tour. Twin Peaks might’ve been my favorite live act of 2016 and they’re teaming up with Spanish rockers Hinds for an indie super-tour of sorts. Friday’s show is sold out, but Thursday tickets await you. A lot of fun guaranteed here.

The Avalanches at The Mezzanine — Tuesday, April 18

This isn’t sold out?! You people are insane. The Avalanches are back together for the first time in over fifteen years and will be bringing the sounds of their latest sophomore release Wildflower along with the downright iconic music from their 2000 debut, Since I Left You. Bold prediction: Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bundick (who has recently re-re-located to the Bay) will join the production duo on stage for “If I Was A Folkstar.”

San Fermin at The Independent — Tuesday, April 25

The Brooklyn eight-piece baroque pop band always tears it up when they come to SF. San Fermin’s Monday show sold out, but Tuesday just got added a week ago and they’ll be armed with their recently released third album, Belong. They’re one of the most unique touring acts in the business.

Julie Byrne at Swedish — Sunday April 16th

Byrne is opening a sold out three night set for Whitney at the Independent, but she and her guitar will be gracing the Swedish American Hall stage on Sunday night for her own headlining show. Not Even Happiness is one of this year’s best early releases and this is yet another perfect pairing for the vaulted ceilings and lovely acoustics of Swedish Hall.

4/20 Stage

Berner’s Hippie Hill feat. Kevin Gates, Lil B, Jesse Royal, Young Dolph, Kool John, Rich The Kid + Special Guests at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

Besides the actual Hippie Hill itself, this is likely the best place on 4/20 to get totally fucking stoned. You can pretty much expect weed-themed everything at this show with a balance of big name hip-hop and local giants like Lil B and Kool John. The “special guests” part of the bill is intriguing to say the least. Expect some crazy-ass shit and a helluvalotta weed.

Skepta at 1015 Folsom

This one’s a long-time coming. All of Skepta’s previous attempts to play in the US have been thwarted by visa issues, but now, the UK’s foremost Grime superstar is finally here and this will be only his 4th performance stateside. Skepta’s impeccable debut LP Konnichiwa won 2016’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize (top UK album) and his performance of “Shutdown” at the BRIT Awards gala (below) leaves a lasting impression of an artist at the top of his game.

Prince Paul & The Dip with DJ Platurn, Fritz Montana and White Knuckles at The Chapel

Prince Paul, as the name might suggest, is hop hop royalty, straight up. Dude is responsible for producing some of the most classic classics (De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modelling School) and his DJ sets are engaging AF. DJ Platurn brings his famed ‘45 Sessions’ across the Bay for the night and there’s a full slate of diverse music on this bill.

The Relationship w/ Cotillon (Record Release), Never Young and Babewatch at Rickshaw Stop

Weezer’s Brian Bell fronts The Relationship, but it’s former SFers Cotillon that have us most stoked here. They’ll be celebrating the release of their latest album, The Afternoons, produced by Girls’ JR White and out on Burger Records. Never Young is another solid local upstart, with a recent EP out on the splendid Father/Daughter Records.

The Sultry Stage

Denitia & Sene at The New Parish — Friday, April 21

This sexy electro R&B duo from New York definitely produce quality bedroom jams. 2013’s his and hers is essential listening and they’ve added to their arsenal with last year’s equally velvety love and noir.

NAO at The Regency — Thursday, April 20

Ok, I know this show technically belongs on the 4/20 “Stage”, but NAO is way sexier than she is stoner-y. The East London future soul singer has seen her star rising and I can assure you that this will be an …. intimate show.

Cash Campain at Brick and Mortar Music Hall — Tuesday April 25

I gotta hand it to Cash Campain. Dude’s been a champion of the local R&B movement in the Bay for years and I’m stoked to see he’s headlining a show in the city. He comes from a talented family (rapper Caleborate is his little brother) and his latest single, “Daydream,” is hot business. (Almost as hot as the cover of his aptly-titled latest album, Michael in ‘79.)

Roisin Murphy at The Warfield — Wednesday April 19

The Queen of Irish dance pop comes to the Bay on the heels of back-to-back albums in the last two years.

Royksopp at Fox Theater - Tuesday April 18

The Swedish Norwegian electro legends are descending upon the Fox and they haven’t dropped an album since 2014. You know what that means, right? Classics all night long.

Big Freedia at Mezzanine — Thursday, April 27

The Queen of bounce! Ending the list with this gem, cause here’s hoping you still have some energy by the end of Fauxchella to grind with Big Freedia. She always kills it in the Bay, including multiple Outside Lands highlight performances, and the LGBT icon is a beloved figure here. Welcome back!

The flower crown, a go-to accessory for Coachella fashionistas, has its share of critics. Flower crowns are basic, they've been done, but hey, at least they're not Native American headdresses.

Now there's good news for those looking to upgrade their hippie-inspired garment game: A marijuana-laden flower crown, introduced just in time for the Southern California music festival next month. The crowns are available at Palm Springs Safe Access dispensary just 15 minutes from the festival gates in a limited quantity that's for sure going to sell out.

The crowns come from Lowell Farms, a grower who've taken an organic, Whole Foods hipness approach to marijuana cultivation and branding. The garlands of the crown feature their "Coachella Blend" of cannabis, which is also sold separately, and includes a mixture of aptly named weed strains including "Dog Walker," "Single White Girl," and "Chocolate Hashberry."

A limited number of medical marijuana "patients" who are the first to pick up their pre-orders of the blend will receive the crowns with their order, each of which contains a quarter ounce of smokeable cannabis, or a $60 value according to Lowell Farms. And even without a large number of crowns available, the trend could definitely catch on, with enterprising Coachella attendees fashioning their own pot-festooned crowns next month.

Not to be a buzzkill, but there's a big potential problem with marketing marijuana products like a "Coachella Blend." The festival has been resistant to use of its brand, even litigiously so. Coachella, sued Urban Outfitters — seemingly a natural ally — for invoking the festival's name in items like a lacy, cream-colored tunic. You know, the kind of top that would go pretty well with a cannabis flower crown.

Has it really been five years? In fact, it almost has been five years since James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem did a series of farewell shows at Terminal 5 in New York, following a huge, impossible-to-get-into, and critically hailed concert at Madison Square Garden, in late March and early April of 2011. Gothamist was there for what many fans considered a historic moment in American rock, and so were a few thousand lucky others. A documentary was made about the farewell, and fans went on to gush about those shows, which were imbued with the sublime glory of a band dissolving and going out on a high note of their own design. But, just like Sleatter-Kinney eventually decided they loved each other and writing music too much to make the goodbye permanent, Murphy announced today that LCD Soundsystem isn't doing a silly reunion tour as speculated by Pitchfork and others Monday. They're officially back together with a new album of music, and beyond Coachella in April they will be doing a full-fledged tour that won't be some sad rehash after all.

But what will all the arbiters of cool say now if they spent a boatload of cash to get into that MSG show and still talk about it to whoever will listen?

In an open letter published on the band's site and on Facebook, Murphy writes that a funny thing happened early last year, as he went on writing songs by himself like he always does, "while changing a baby, or songs about annoying things that i sing to myself, or to friends while sitting at a bar, or about christmas, or new york." He realized he was writing an album. And then he found out that bandmates Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang were on board to get the band back together.

From the lowercased letter, which begins, in response to internet rumors, "let's just start this thing finally with some clarity":

early in 2015, i realized i had more of those [songs] than i’d ever had in my life. more of them than when i went in to make any lcd record, or when i recorded tapes upon tapes of terrible things in high school. just loads of them, and i found myself a little perplexed. if i record them, what do i do with them? maybe i shouldn’t record them at all? i considered that, which was in a way the easiest option, but it also seemed like a weird and arbitrary (and sort of cowardly) cop-out. but to record them — well then, suddenly i have, what — a record?

so i asked pat and nancy to come over to my apartment for coffee and told them: “i’m going to record some music. should i make up a band name, or make a “james murphy” record, or should it be lcd?” we all thought a good amount about it. we have had lives for the past 5 years, which has been nice, and those guys have made amazing music with museum of love, the juan maclean, and all sorts of other things. i’d managed to do a bunch of fun, dumb stuff which mostly annoyed people who were into the band because, well, subway turnstiles and a coffee aren't lcd, basically.

at any rate, they both said “let’s make an lcd record”. you see, if they didn’t want to, which i’d half assumed, then there’s no such thing as lcd.

He says that "this isn’t a victory lap or anything, which wouldn’t be of much interest to us," adding, "this is just the bus full of substitute teachers back from their coffee break with new music and the same weird gear — or as much of it as we still have."

Murphy is characteristically sheepish and self-conscious about the scare-quote-necessitating "comeback" — how terribly uncool it is, after all, to go out in a blaze of glory and then come back again and say "just kidding" after five years. He feels especially bad for any fans who invested a lot in getting tickets for that MSG show — which ended up making a lot of people angry and left out because of some seemingly shady dealings to jack up secondary-market ticket prices. But he's realized that maybe making music, and delighting all the other fans who will just be happy for that new music, is better than standing on principle and not making any more music at all.

"Last night i sat with al [Doyle] and nancy in a weird italian bar and we talked about how fucking awesome it was that so many people were happy to have us back," Murphy writes, "but that doesn’t take away from those who feel hurt. to you i have to say: i’m seriously sorry. the only thing we can do now is get back into the studio and finish this record, and make it as fucking good as we can possibly make it."

As for the tour, the dates aren't set yet, and he says they're currently working on the schedule, but it's happening "sometime this year."

Murphy has also taken to responding directly to some of the thousands of comments already accumulated on Facebook.

"Why would a fan be annoyed at LCD Soundsystem making music again?" asks fan Lizzy Dunphy.

"Because shit means a lot to people," replied Murphy (presumably), "and we're fucking lucky to have someone care enough about us to be angry, frankly."

When another fan asked why he even cared what any haters might think, Murphy replied, "because 1. the people i'm talking about aren't 'haters', and 2., what's wrong with haters anyway? some of my best friends are haters."

Time To Get Away: LCD Soundsystem Bid Farewell Tonight

Kids, are you ready to sweat and sway out in the desert for three days in April to the sounds of some of the world's biggest and best bands? After weeks of speculation, the time has come: Coachella has announced their 2012 lineup.

Headliners for the three nights include The Black Keys, Radiohead, and Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, with the support of a few dozen kickass artists, like The Shins, Bon Iver, Miike Snow, Florence & the Machine, Andrew Bird, M83, Arctic Monkeys, Mazzy Star, DJ Shadow, and many, many more.

This year, the party is spread over six total days--two three-day weekend rounds of music and mayhem, April 13-15 and April 20-22. "We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends. That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people," say organizers.

We got over our trauma of getting there and getting in, and started enjoying ourselves more by Day 2, when several of our favorite acts came on, including SF's own Girls and Faith No More, Australia's Temper Trap, Gossip, Tokyo Police Club, Beach House, the xx, and MGMT. We had to get out of there a little early, as the throngs arriving for Muse started giving us flashbacks to Day 1 and we needed to rest our feet.

Unlike in previous years when the enormous desert music fest felt relatively organized, if chaotic, Coachella 2010 feels like an overcrowded nightmare — and it's not just because we're getting older. A lot of the acts sounded great, including She & Him, Passion Pit, La Roux, and LCD Soundsystem. Jay-Z brought down the house with numbers like "99 Problems" and a version of "Forever Young" featuring a surprise guest appearance by Beyoncé. But seriously, though, even the twenty-one-year-olds this year seemed battle-scarred and shell-shocked after a day of fighting through massive, shove-y crowds in the hot desert sun.

Well folks, at least one of your trusty editors is venturing out into the SoCal desert this weekend to bring you back some news and a few photos of the wonder that is Coachella 2010. For those who only know of it from legend, it's basically Burning Man Lite for Los Angelenos and the heartier San Diegans, and we're sure we'll run into a few travel-weary San Franciscans in Indio today too.

A few of this weekend's scheduled UK acts aren't going to make it because of that volcano in Iceland, including the Cribs, a band that recently includes famed Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.

Ted of BAGeL Radio posted a list of handy tips for those of you trekking down to Coachella. Some helpful advice while sojourning in the glamorous Coachella Valley? Ted suggests, among other things, "As soon as you park, MARK THE LOCATION IN YOUR iPHONE," "Don't drink alcohol until the sun goes down -- you will be tired enough after hours and hours in the heat," "Bring cash for food, water, merch, brownies."
