When looking into purchasing a house, Farrell noted that they were sold when Nubbins came scratching at the door during a showing, asking for attention. The following years showed the bond between Farrell and Nubbins deepen.

But that relationship was severed after a couple staying at an Airbnb two doors down from Farrell's residence allegedly took the outdoor cat back home with them... more than 500 miles away back to SoCal.

According to ABC7, Farrell has been fighting for the past three months to get his cat back home. Farrell had first noticed Nubbins was missing when he got back from a trip earlier last year. Canvassing the community, neighbors told him that guests staying at nearby Airbnb asked about Nubbins while seeing her out in the area. The unnamed couple renting the Airbnb "[loved] the cat" — so much so that they, somehow, thought it was alright to take her with them when they checked out.

Farrell said he got a call this past November from a vet in Long Beach confirming they had his cat but couldn't send her to him; when the SoCal vet had scanned Nubbins for a microchip, it produced Farrell’s home address and phone number.

The vet's office, which is a member of Veterinary Centers of America, said it has "legal obligations to the client who initially brought in the cat, the person with whom a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship was established — a relationship that is governed in California by the state Veterinary Medical Board." This appears to be why the cat was then given back to the former Airbnb guests, as opposed to Farrell.

The neighborhood has also rallied to get Nubbins back by filing a report with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The SoCal vet office also noted in a shared statement with the news outlet that it’s "fully cooperating with the Sonoma County Sheriff's investigation."

Alas, it’s still TBD on whether or not Nubbins is reunited with the Railroad Avenue-located community she was taken from — but here's hoping the cat will again be scratching at Farrell's back door sooner, rather than later. Becuase... like... maybe you shouldn't hold someone's adopted, microchipped pet hostage? Just a wild, crazy, empathic thought.

Related: Airbnb Books Highest Net Income Quarter Ever, as People Are Vaxxed and Travelling Again

Photo: Getty Images/Maryviolet

Watch These North Bay Firefighters Save A Kitten From Certain Doom Inside Car Engine

The owner of the car agreed to let firefighters tear it apart to free the cat.

Arts & Entertainment

animal videos

animals

cat

Fire Department

santa rosa

Eve Batey

A sharp-eared person passing a car parked on a Santa Rosa street likely saved a stray kitten this weekend, alerting area firefighters to the little pussy's plight.

According to a Facebook post from the Santa Rosa Fire Department, at around 3 p.m. Saturday, their "Engine 1 was dispatched to a non-emergency call for a report of a kitten stuck in the engine of a car."

The Chron reports that "Someone initially heard meowing sounds around 10:30 a.m. but couldn’t figure out where they were coming from." Eventually it was determined that the cat was inside the car's engine, a not-uncommon occurrence in colder months.

"People at the scene tracked down the car’s owner, who gave the OK to cut up his engine box," the Chron reports — an easy task for firefighters, as "Our fire engines are like giant tool boxes with crews capable of solving whatever problem they arrive at," the SRFD writes.

"Footage from the scene captured two firefighters digging under the car's hood trying to find the feline," NBC Bay Area reports. "As the firefighters pried away, faint meows from the black kitten could be heard." It went something like this:

"The kitten was safely removed and happy to be out," the SRFD writes. It appeared to be a stray, the Chron reports, and once it was freed, it was "turned over to someone at the scene."

A tense standoff between police and a suspected car thief threatening to jump from a SoMa building ended safely Wednesday, after the man's cat was brought to the scene to coax him off the ledge.

According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson CHP Officer Vu Williams, the man, who has not been named by police, was driving a Toyota Highlander that has been reported as stolen at 2:41 p.m. Wednesday when a CHP officer pulled the driver over on Dore Street, near Harrison Street.

The man "fled from the stop on foot," Williams says, and ran into a two-story building on 10th Street near Harrison Street.

Shortly after he ran into the building, police saw him emerge from a second-story window. He dangled there, "shirtless, barefoot and threatening to jump" for about three hours, as a crowd gathered below.

That's when, says San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan, a family member brought the suspect's cat to the scene, where the feline was "paramount" in getting the man to finally agree not to jump.

A neighborhood cat has become such a fixture at a San Jose high school that it has issued a student ID for it.

Bubba the cat was officially issued a Leland High School card in July and underneath the bar code it simply reads "Feline." The cat, adopted by the family of Amber Marienthal in 2009, officially lives behind both Leland and Bret Harte Middle School, but during the day the cat loves to roam the halls of bot schools. Although both of Marienthal's sons attend Leland, "He's more there for everyone," Marienthal told the San Jose Mercury News.

The cat is so sociable and has so much wanderlust that it sometimes gets him into perilous situations. He sometimes lays in the middle of the school soccer field during practice, vying for attention, and once got himself locked in a classroom for 36 hours. "He's really social and he has no fear," Marienthal says. "I'm surprised he's still around."

Bubba has become such a presence at the school that the students, teachers, and administrators all have come to tolerate his presence. Just don't indulge him, as one teacher made the mistake of doing. "Bubba would meow for treats," said Marienthal. "[The teacher] got sick of the noise."

Although Marienthal has put up a Facebook page on Bubba's behalf, there's a limit to the extent that she'll manage her cat's Internet media presence.

"People want me to get him on Instagram—I only have so much time to devote to my cat's social life."
We love the SFPD today. Why? Because of this story. See, according to SF Weekly, a "frantic" man flagged down an officer, "beside himself over his lost cat, 'Fluffy.'"

And if you love pets like members of your family, you relate to Fluffy's papa. (In fact, you might even lose sleep on a regular basis worrying whether or not your cat may one day runaway, escape while you're on vacation, get lost during a post-earthquake evacuation, or worse. Also, more likely than not, you might be chronically single because of this perfectly natural obsession.) Missing for over a month (no!), the man heard his cat howling from inside an abandon house in the Taraval hood, and the police officer went into action. The SFPD cop, Patrice Scanlan, "phoned Animal Control -- but was informed that the service couldn't spare anyone at the moment. So she called a San Francisco-based locksmith, who popped the house's rusted lock," soon thereafter finding the cat cowering "under the oven in an upstairs kitchen" (weep, weep), thus making the world a better place. So, congratulations, SFPD Officer Patrice Scanlan. You are officially an awesome human being for life.

Up for Adoption: Cat Found Stuffed in Suitcase, Abandoned at SFO

Named after the duffel bag in which he was abandoned, "Duffy" was discovered by residents in Burlingame near the Embassy Suites at SFO on April 5. Named after the duffel bag in which he was abandoned, "Duffy" was discovered by residents in Burlingame near the Embassy Suites at SFO on April 5. Although he was left there for more than eight hours, the cat is reportedly fine and ready for a loving, caring home. Humane society spokesman Scott Delucchi said, "We're assuming that whoever dumped the cat didn't know animal abandonment is illegal. (Another thing the unidentified animal abuser didn't know: that they will burn for eternity in the lower circles of hell.) If you would like to adopt "Duffy" (and who wouldn't?!) or any other pet who needs a safe home, please contact the Peninsula Humane Society at 650-340-7022. But remember, pets are neither accessories nor home accents. Please use caution before deciding to adopt. UPDATE: Duffy has been adopted. Yay! But, remember, there still plenty more fuzzy faces out there that need homes.

Film du Jour: No Kittens Were Hurt in the Making of this Clip

What all of the venom being spilled in the American Apparel</a...

misc

cat

humor

kitten

Brock Keeling

What, you're too good for a cat posting? Well, we aren't. Clearly. What with this week's solider/puppy/cliff incident that we are too weak to talk about much less link to, we feel it is our sovereign duty to highlight the sheer awesomeness of owning and loving a pet.

For your consideration, we present to you Hugo. Hugo, you see, needs over a thousand baby spankings and belly rubs if you ask us. His disdain for Mickey Mouse ears is more than understandable. Just watch and you'll see.

lets his dog bite someone?

There are a few ways that this situation could work itself out, depending on the parties involved. The person who was bitten could have called us and reported the bite - then requested a 'Vicious & Dangerous Dog Hearing'. These hearings happen every Thursday at City Hall, and are basically 'doggy court'. We would have picked up the dog and held it in our custody at the shelter until the hearing.

Funny thing is we knew the animal in question who was indeed not a dog or a cat, but a lost ferret. I think the ambiguity was twofold - for one I've been told ferrets are illegal to own in California; and secondly to allow the proper owner to identify the pet in question.
