The suspect in the fatal beating of 88-year–old grandmother Yik Oi Huang has just been found guilty, and for good measure, he was also found guilty of robbing her house afterward, plus a slew of other robberies and carjackings.

The January 2019 beating 88-year–old Yik Oi Huang, popularly known as Popo Huang around her Visitacion Valley neighborhood, seemed a particularly brutal example of elder abuse. Huang was badly bludgeoned after the early morning attack at Visitacion Valley Playground, where she was found bloodied in a sandbox with head injuries, a broken spine, broken hand, and broken ribs. Her shirt had been pulled up and her pants pulled down below beneath her waist, her shoes stolen, and her house keys stolen too. To make matters worse, the suspect in the case was then accused of heading straight to her house and burglarizing it.

Huang spent a year in Laguna Honda Hospital recovering, though died from her injuries there after nearly a full year.

The suspect, now-25-year-old Keonte Gathron of San Francisco (who was 18 at the time of the attack), was accused of being on a 13-day crime bender. Those accusations include the gunpoint robbery of teens’ cellphones, a couple carjackings, and multiple other robberies. According to the SF DA's office, Gathron targeted victims who spoke “little or no English. Each victim was selected because they were alone, distracted and small."

All of those accusations have now been proven in court. The Chronicle reports that Gathron has been found guilty on 16 counts including first-degree murder in a jury trial that wrapped Tuesday.

"We are pleased to announce Mr. Gathron has been found guilty of numerous counts,” SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement to KGO. “Most importantly in the murder of Mrs. Huang, an 88-year-old grandmother who simply out doing her morning exercise. He is now being held accountable, finally, after so many years for this family having to wait to receive justice."

It is possible that some untreated mental illness could be at play in the case of Gathron. As the Chronicle reported from the courtroom last month, Gathron represented himself at trial, and his main argument in his own defense was that Muni surveillance video of him that was shown to the jury was altered using artificial intelligence.

Gathron faces a possible sentence of life in prison, and he’s scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, November 25.

The tragic loss of the grandmother Yik Oi Huang was acknowledged at the park where she was attacked, which has since been renamed the Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park.

A suspect in a Thursday carjacking in San Francisco was spotted driving in Rancho Cordova, in Sacramento County, and when sheriff's deputies began pursuing him, he allegedly fired at them out of the car window.

Carjacking suspect Anthony Hurtado, 34, was arrested Thursday night near Rancho Cordova, just east of Sacramento proper in Sacrameno County.

It's not clear from the initial report when and where the carjacking took place in San Francisco, and we don't have a description of the suspect vehicle.

But Hurtado and the allegedly stolen vehicle were spotted by Sacramento County sheriff's deputies around 11 pm Thursday in Rancho Cordova, in the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Coloma Road.

"As the Deputies activated their overhead emergency lights to initiate a vehicle stop near Winding Way and San Juan Road, the suspect in that vehicle, later identified as 34-year-old Anthony Hurtado, began to accelerate in an attempt to get away," the department says in a Facebook post. "He then reached out of the driver’s side window, pointed a handgun toward the Deputies’ vehicles, and fired several rounds.  Deputies continued to pursue Hurtado but never returned fire."

Shortly after allegedly firing on the deputies, Hurtado reportedly brought his vehicle to a stop and surrendered peacefully.

No one was injured in the shooting, and a subsequent investigation of the area did not find any property damage.

Hurtado was transported and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for multiple felony charges, including attempted murder.

Hurtado is now due for an initial court appearance in Sacramento on Monday, December 30. And the carjacking charges in San Francisco will clearly have to wait.

A 20-year-old San Francisco man is in jail for carjacking and assault, after hooking up with a Grindr date, allegedly pulling out a semiautomatic weapon, trying to steal the date’s car, and then shooting him.

You would think that an online hookup went well if it quickly led to consensual sex in a car. But consider that it did not go well if following that sex, one party pulls out a semiautomatic weapon, tries to steal the car, and shoots their date.

And that’s what happened with two men who reportedly met on Grindr, according to Bay Area News Group’s description of a Grindr date in the East Bay that ended with an attempted carjacking and assault with a semiautomatic weapon.

The News Group’s report does not name the suspect, and describes him only as a “20-year-old San Francisco man.” But the report does note that the SF suspect is currently in jail with bond set at $155,000, with his next court appearance being scheduled for January 17.

The report also does not note the specific date on the encounter. But it says that after the two men had sex, and then the suspect pulled out the semiautomatic firearm and attempted to steal the car. The victim fought back, and struggled to take the gun, but was shot in the upper leg and buttock. The victim checked himself into San Leandro hospital, and later told his tale to police.

The victim did not even know the suspect’s name. But he still had the Grindr profile (which does have location data), which police were able to use to identify the suspect.

Police then arrested the suspect when he showed up to court for a completely separate, unrelated gun charge in Oakland.

As Oakland gets more restless over the city's current crime spike, Mayor Sheng Thao and the Oakland police held a Thursday press conference making a big to-do over the arrest of ten alleged gang members they say were running a significant carjacking and robbery ring.

There’s no question that crime is up across the board in Oakland, in spikes well beyond what any other Bay Area city is seeing. According to the latest numbers, Oakland has seen a 21% increase in violent crime over the last year, plus a 30% increase in robbery and burglaries, and a 51% increase in car thefts over that period. Mayor Sheng Thao has only been in office for nine of those 12 months, so you can’t say it’s all her fault. But her performance on the crime issue is surely the main metric by which her city is going to judge her effectiveness.

That may be why Thao was on hand for a big Thursday press conference with police officers, where NBC Bay Area reports the Oakland Police Department announced the arrest of ten alleged gang members whom they say were involved in a significant carjacking and armed robbery ring.

“We will take and we are unafraid of taking enforcement actions on those who continue to engage in violence and engage in traumatizing our communities,” Thao said at the press conference. And in a nod to public pressure, she added, “And I know that, as your mayor, the buck stops with me.”

The gang in question was apparently known as Ghost Town. According to Oakland police captain Tony Jones, “This particular group of individuals have been involved in a series of carjackings, armed robberies, burglaries, and have a history of engaging in these crimes throughout the Bay Area.”

The arrests were an effort of what the City of Oakland calls their Ceasefire Strategy, which they say “focuses on the most violent gangs/groups and individuals who are at the greatest risk of shooting or being shot.”  

According to Captain Jones, “Ceasefire has begun to shift the focus to incorporate crimes — not just shootings and homicides, but also the armed robberies and any violent crime involving a firearm.”

Nine of the arrested suspects have been charged by the Alameda County DA’s office with weapons possession. Jones added that “One of the individuals of the nine that were arrested also had a warrant for an attempted homicide,” so there may be more charges to come. The tenth suspect is a minor, and has not yet been charged.

Former DA Chesa Boudin probably would have been crucified for this, but DA Brooke Jenkins has dropped all charges and released the two suspects in last Saturday’s alleged carjacking gone wrong that resulted in the car flying off the Sanchez Street stairway hill.  

The most bizarre San Francisco crime story of the week has been last Saturday night’s car careening off the 50-foot Sanchez Street stairway hill in the Castro District, with a reported five occupants of the car fleeing the scene. There were initial rumors that the Lincoln had been carjacked, which seemed to be confirmed by reports of a similar model car being carjacked just minutes before at 19th and Dolores streets. And come Wednesday of this week, the whole matter seemed on its way to being tied up like a bow with the arrest of two suspects, 36-year-old Kevin Nelson and 31-year-old Jennifer Bonham (though there were reportedly five suspects in the vehicle).

That bow has come untied. The Chronicle reported Friday afternoon that DA Brooke Jenkins has dropped the charges and released both suspects. The Chron also confirmed that both Nelson and Bonham are no longer in custody as of Friday afternoon.

“The charges against Ms. Bonham and Mr. Nelson have been discharged at this time pending further investigation and witness availability,” Jenkins’s office said in a statement.

These charges can technically be refiled in the future.

But this is particularly puzzling, because as Mission Local reports, there is allegedly video of the pair leaving the car once it landed on its roof. That site also reports witnesses captured audio of one of the suspects saying “Come on, Kevin. I’m sorry, I love you, come on,” and “Kevin please, I’m sorry everybody. Kevin, come on, we’ve gotta go.”

Nelson, who was visibly bloodied in the crash, reportedly sought treatment at a local hospital, as the Chronicle reports.

Moreover, the SF Standard adds that Bonham “was banned from contacting Nelson as a condition of her release” on parole from a prior offense on March 2. Since the two were arrested together on Wednesday, that would seem to merit at least some kind of charge, if not custody for a parole violation?

It seems like these two were known to law enforcement, as they say.

A Friday carjacking of a delivery driver in SoMa was followed by a Saturday shooting of an Amazon driver in Potrero Hill, making a rough weekend for delivery drivers in San Francisco.

A pair of San Francisco crime incidents this weekend targeting delivery drivers brings to mind the infamous February 2021 carjacking where a DoorDash driver had his car stolen while two toddlers were in the backseat, and calls attention to the serious risks these drivers face while trying to make a living. KRON4 reports on two incredibly dangerous criminal attacks on delivery drivers, one a Friday carjacking in SoMa where the thief engaged in some viciously unsafe driving, and the second the Saturday shooting of an Amazon delivery driver in an attempted robbery.

KRON4 has some video from both incidents in the segment above. The Friday night carjacking incident in the early evening at Seventh and Mission Streets, partially captured on Instagram video by Ricci Wynne, a local social media shit-stirrer with a flair for self-promotion.

“A @doordash or @ubereats driver pulled up to @squarepieguys to pick up a pizza 🍕 delivery up and was robbed for his car in broad daylight,” Wynne says in the post. The video shows the alleged carjacker driving the freshly stolen vehicle backwards down Mission Street, with the driver’s side door open for some reason, as the heartbroken and exasperated driver tries unsuccessfully to chase the car down on foot.

“It’s really disheartening to see that happen because the guy was in a really bad spot right there,” Wynne told KRON4. “He’s losing his car, he definitely was just trying to make a living, trying to earn a decent income in the city.”

KRON4 separately reports on the Saturday shooting of an Amazon driver, the aftermath of which is seen in the above tweet. SFPD was notified of a shooting at Mariposa Street and Pennsylvania Avenue at 6:11 p.m. Saturday, and found the delivery driver suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police say the suspect attempted to rob the unidentified driver, who was transported to the hospital, and there have been no updates on the driver’s condition.

Amazon said in a statement to KRON4, “We’re working closely with law enforcement as they investigate this crime and are focused on supporting our team during this difficult time.”

The duo who in February allegedly stole a DoorDash delivery van with two toddlers in the backseat have been in County Jail ever since, and their grand jury indictments are being handed down this week.

It was a Saturday night drama that engulfed local Twitter feeds one night in February, and a horrible tale of late-stage capitalism. Top-earning DoorDash driver Jeffrey Fang, described as a “ride-hailing legend,” was driving with his one-year-old and a four-year-old in the backset since he couldn’t afford childcare — because, as Wired explains, “a baby­sitter earns nearly what Fang does” in this town. His van was carjacked with the two children inside, but thankfully, the vehicle and children were recovered within four hours.

The suspects took a few days to find, but remain incarcerated now. And the Chronicle reports that one of the suspects has now been indicted on 12 charges and 10 felony counts, while the other is “scheduled for a court appearance at 9 a.m. Friday.”

German Morazan, who is is 27 years old according to SFBay, was indicted for “felony kidnapping during a carjacking, felony kidnapping to commit a robbery, felony assault with a deadly weapon that is not a firearm, felony second-degree robbery, felony carjacking, felony unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, two counts of felony kidnapping, two counts of felony child endangerment, and misdemeanor endangering the health of a child," per the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

His alleged accomplice Erline Romero, 26, appears in court Friday morning. We don't yet know if he’ll be indicted and on what counts. But the Chronicle reports he was arrested on charges of “two counts of kidnapping, first-degree robbery and car theft.”

The DoorDash driver Jeffrey Fang was benefited by a GoFundMe campaign that raised $155,000 for him and his family. Though, as Eater SF points out, the company DoorDash was less generous, despite the fact that its executives became overnight billionaires in their IPO just two months earlier.

Charges made against a minor thought to be involved in an attempted robbery and carjacking of a 75-year-old San Francisco woman were said to be dropped by District Attorney Chesa Boudin over a "lack of DNA evidence." But that reporting has since been challenged.

As SFist reported before, three female suspects assaulted an elderly woman walking back to her car in an Inner Richmond Safeway parking lot in March. After being dragged to the ground, a good samaritan intervened to protect the woman from more bodily harm, as well as thwarting a possible carjacking by the trio of deplorable teens; all three suspects fled the scene before police arrived. Both the victim and good samaritan were treated on-site for minor injuries by first responders.

One of the teenagers — a 16-year-old girl from San Leandro — was eventually arrested, while the other two suspects were still being sought for the assault and attempted robbery.

In an original report from ABC7, the news outlet’s Dion Lim broke the story that felony charges against one of the suspects were dropped by the district attorney Friday. (This was confirmed by "multiple high-level sources" sharing the information with Lim.)

"I believe in restorative justice and I understand Chesa has a model but...his way of going about it is not working," says the good samaritan to ABC7. The unnamed male bystander also noted that he put himself "in a position where [he] could have lost [his] life" after breaking through the car's rear window to thwart the carjacking.

"I would have hoped we could have seen some kind of justice," he added.

It's currently unclear how the other suspects, who are described as not being minors, will be sought and charged in the crime.

Update: The Washington Post reports via an opinion piece that Lim — who has been vocal in criticism of Boudin when it comes to perceptions about crime in San Francisco — may have elicited quotes like the one above under some duress. And, "The charges against the assailant were never dropped. In California, as in most states, juvenile cases are generally sealed, so state law prevents the DA’s office from discussing the case with the public. But in phone interviews, both the victim and [a witness] tell me they were informed by Boudin’s office that Lim’s story is inaccurate, that the juvenile not only still faces charges but that she also had a court date last week."

Good Samaritan Thwarts Safeway Carjacking of 75-Year-Old Woman

When three female suspects assaulted an elderly woman and tried to steal her car Thursday night, a fellow Safeway shopper literally jumped onto the car to stop the caper.

The recent Bay Area pattern of targeting elderly victims for theft and violent crime saw another such incident last Thursday night, albeit this one with a little happier an ending than most. A KGO report today describes how shortly after 5 p.m. last Thursday at an SF Safeway location, a 75-year-old woman was the intended target of an assault and carjacking — but a fellow shopper halted the theft by intervening, and gave the suspects enough of a scare that they fled.

The Safeway is not specifically identified in the report, though it's clearly the store at Cabrillo Avenue and Seventh Avenue. The good Samaritan describes that he saw an elderly woman being attacked, and the three assailants have taken her purse and keys to her red Lexus. Upon the attackers trying to drive the car away, the fellow who intervened smashed the back window of the Lexus, which was apparently enough to get the would-be thieves to abort the mission. (And ironically, they rush to an apparent accomplice lookout vehicle, which drives off without them.)

"I'm walking across the parking lot and I see this old woman being dragged across by her head, these girls are punching her and kicking and stomped on," the unidentified good samaritan told KGO. “But I just punched through the back window and it was loud. It was loud enough and kind of scary enough to freak them out."

Neither the victim nor the intervening party is identified, though the fellow who intervened does give an on-screen Zoom-style interview to KGO. We see from his backdrop that he is a Bernie supporter, and the report does otherwise detail that he’s a recent college graduate and apparently an almond milk drinker, because that's what he dropped during the melee. The victim was happy enough that she didn’t ask to be compensated for the smashing of her car’s rear window.

San Francisco police located and arrested the second suspect in the carjacking and kidnapping of a DoorDash driver's minivan with two small children inside.

The February 6 kidnapping made widespread headlines two weekends ago after an Amber Alert went out for the missing 4-year-old, Winnifred, and 1-year-old, Sean, after their father Jeffrey Fang left his vehicle idling while he made a delivery in Pacific Heights. Fang said he tried to struggle with one suspect, the driver of the vehicle, after finding him in the driver's seat, before he drove off with the kids still buckled in back.

The minivan and the two children were found safe four and a half hours later in the Bayview, and the SFPD arrested one suspect, 25-year-old Erlin Romero, on February 9 on suspicion of two counts of kidnapping, first-degree robbery, car theft, and other charges.

Now, as NBC Bay Area reports, police say they've arrested a second suspect, 27-year-old German Morazan, whom they located in the Bayview on Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Crisp Road and Quesada Avenue. He's been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, child endangerment, auto theft, robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, and conspiracy.

"The San Francisco Police Department would like to acknowledge and thank the public for their concern for the wellbeing of the children," the SFPD said in a statement. "Information regarding the abduction was shared quickly on social media and it was apparent that residents of San Francisco were actively looking for the van and sharing information."

It's unclear what role each suspect played in the crimes, and charges are still pending against Morazan.

Romero, who was wearing an ankle monitor pertaining to two crimes he allegedly committed last year, was arraigned on February 11 and a judge permitted him to be released on bail.

SF Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who represents Pacific Heights, told KPIX last week that she holds District Attorney Chesa Boudin partly to blame for allowing criminals back on the streets to reoffend.

"The DA is responsible for public safety in the city and he has to own that. All I hear is, ‘It’s the police’s fault, probation’s fault, parole’s fault, CHP’s fault,'" Stefani said, perhaps referring to this case or this case in which criminals already charged with crimes in the last year now stand accused of new and worse crimes while they were back on the street. "But he has to take personal responsibility and look at how to make people safer in the city."

Stefani added, "People are scared; really scared. They are moving because of this. [Criminals] reoffend and reoffend, then commit a big enough crime to prosecute because it’s in the spotlight."

In response, Boudin tells KPIX, "I don’t think finger-pointing is helpful. We’re all working together — or at least we’re supposed to be — to keep SF safe. I sure hope Stefani will ensure my office has the funding we need to get back to the same staffing levels we had in 2019."

Social media was aflutter last night with people reposting, sharing, and retweeting pertinent information from an Amber Alert that was issued after a DoorDasher had his car stolen — with his two young kids inside. SFPD found the children still inside the stolen vehicle in Bayview around 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

According to ABC7, Jeffrey Fang, the father of the two children, was delivering an order for DoorDash on the 2100 block of Jackson Street in Pacific Heights around 8:45 p.m. when his minivan was stolen; Fang had left the car running with his 1-year-old and 4-year-old inside while he briefly completed the transaction; his hazard lights were also flashing. But after Fang came back to his car, he noticed that a stranger was inside his silver Honda Odyssey, sitting the driver’s seat — before the carjacker promptly took off with his children still buckled in.

"I yelled at him and told him to get out and two of my kids are in the car," Fang said to the local news outlet. "One is a 4-year-old girl and another is a 1-year-old boy...They speak Mandarin only. I just want my kids back."

Fang immediately reported the incident to law officials and the nail-biting search for Winnifred, 4, and Sean, 1, began. CHP issued an Amber Alert for San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Marin, and Santa Clara counties shortly before 11 p.m. — a good while later after the incident and call-to-action was posted on Citizen, as some Twitter users mentioned.

Per the Chronicle, San Francisco police later Saturday evening updated the public saying that all available units — "including motorcycle, traffic enforcement, and dirt bikes" — were mobilized to find the children. Thankfully, local police said that around 1:15 a.m. they found the kids, who were each safe, beside the abandoned vehicle in Bayview.

"Children have been located and are safe! Medical attention summoned just as a precaution," tweeted David Lazar, deputy chief of the investigations bureau.

The newspaper noted the carjacking suspect, who was described by the children as male, is approximately 5' 10" with black hair, brown eyes, and is estimated to be somewhere between  20 to 30 years old; the individual should be considered "armed and dangerous," CHP said; police said he still remains at large as of Sunday morning.

SFPD Releases 911 Audio and Body Camera Footage From Fisherman's Wharf Beating

A carjacking attempt went awry for one suspect in Richmond last week after he allegedly instructed a Lyft driver, at gunpoint, to stop at a gas station for snacks.

Marcus Dean summoned a Lyft at 10:50 p.m. on September 12, and soon he allegedly held a gun to the back of the Lyft driver's head, as the Richmond Police Department explains on Facebook.

"The Lyft driver followed Marcus’s driving instructions and eventually was asked to stop at a gas station for Marcus to get snacks," writes the Richmond PD. "While in the store, the Lyft driver began to flee as Marcus came running out of the store firing his weapon, and striking the Lyft driver's vehicle multiple times."

The driver escaped without injury.

The scene of the driver's successful escape, with a person identified as Marcus Dean running after him, apparently while firing a handgun, can be seen in the surveillance video below.

Dean has since been charged with kidnapping and attempted murder by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office

A man who was carjacked Tuesday afternoon tried to thwart the theft by hopping on his vehicle, but his robbers were not dissuaded.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the crime went down at 4:07 p.m. Tuesday, at a gas station on the 300 block of Bayshore Boulevard, which is near Oakdale Avenue. (If you're looking for a convenient landmark, the Silver Crest Doughnut Shop is on that block.)

Police say that the victim, a 25-year-old man driving an SUV, "was filling his vehicle with gas." When he entered the gas station to pay, to men believed to be in their 30s "jumped in his vehicle and drove away."

Unwilling to let his SUV go without a fight, the victim chased the fleeing men "and climbed on the vehicle."

That's when, police say, one of the suspects "pulled out a handgun and forced [the victim] off the vehicle."

Police confirm that the suspects made off with the man's SUV, and remain at large as of Wednesday morning.The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the fray, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

A woman unloading her car just steps from San Francisco State University's campus was carjacked by three men this week, and as of Friday the suspects remain at large.

Police say the crime went down Tuesday on Fuente Avenue, a short street at the south side of SF State's campus.

The 22-year-old female victim was unloading her car, police say, at 8:55 p.m. when she was approached by two men and a woman, all of whom looked to be in their early 20s.

One of the men "brandished a knife and demanded her keys," according to a report from the San Francisco Police Department.

The woman complied, then ran from the scene, police say.

All three suspects hopped into her car and sped south on Fuente. They haven't been seen since, police say, and no arrests have been made in this case.
