A photographer walking near a busy San Francisco intersection was attacked and mugged Tuesday by a suspect aided by a getaway driver.

Police say that the robbery occurred at 6:12 p.m.Tuesday, at the intersection of Church Street and Duboce Avenue, which is the location of the opening of the N and J Muni Metro line tunnel to and from downtown.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a man in his 30s approached his 50-year-old male victim and shoved him to the ground.

The shover then ripped the camera from the victim's shoulder. He then fled into a waiting vehicle, according to the SFPD.

The victim was not injured in the attack, police say. The suspect is at large as of Thursday morning, police say, and no arrests have been made in the case.

Skateboarding Photographers Robbed Of Camera

Police say that "a struggle ensued," but in the end the thief was triumphant.

SF News

camera

crime

mugging

photograper

sfpd

skateboarder

Eve Batey

A car pulled up, the San Francisco Police Department reports, containing two men aged somewhere between 18 and 25. One of the men stepped out of the car, approached the skateboarders, and demanded their camera.

Police say that "a struggle ensued," but in the end the thief was triumphant, snatching the camera and hopping back into the vehicle.

The suspects fled west on Holloway, police say, camera in their clutches. As of Tuesday morning, they remain at large.

Photographers capturing San Francisco sights were beset by crooks this weekend, as bands of muggers fell upon shooters in both Golden Gate Park and near the Powell Street cable car turnaround.

On Friday at 12:22 in the afternoon, a 64-year-old man was taking photos near Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park when three men in their 20s approached him from behind.

One man grabbed the victim's camera, but the victim refused to let go, according to the San Francisco Police Department. "A struggle ensued," police say, and the victim was knocked to the ground. The mugger dragged the victim on the ground, police say, as the other two suspects assisted by pulling the camera strap off their victim's shoulder.

Once they got hold of the goods, the trio fled in an unknown direction. The victim received minor injuries in the altercation, and was treated at the scene.

A second photog was mugged Sunday, police say. The 19-year-old male was taking pictures on the 900 block of Market Street, which is near the Powell Street cable car turnaround, at 12:21 a.m., when he was approached by a man and woman of unknown age.

Police say that the female suspect "pulled out a nail file" and threatened the victim with it, demanding his camera. The teen handed over the device, and the man and woman took off on foot.

In both cases, police say that the suspects remain at large and that no arrests have been made in either case. If you happen to know anything about these or any other crimes, police ask that you call SFPD's anonymous tip line at at 415-575-4444 or to text a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.

UC Berkeley Police officers say they think they know who put a camera in the restroom of a women's dormitory this April, but so far, no arrests have been made in the super creepy case.

The camera was discovered a week ago in a restroom on the lower level of the Unit 1 Central Building, Bay City News reports.

According to the Unit 1 website, "The Central Building is the main hub of Unit 1 that is located beneath the plaza and includes Lower Levels of Christian and Slottman halls."

In a UC Berkeley campus crime alert issued yesterday, police said that in late April, signs were posted indicating that the women’s public restrooms in that building were closed. The signs instead directed women to use a staff restroom down the hall, by the building's loading dock.

The camera was found in that restroom, which the San Jose Mercury News identifies as "Room L72" on Friday, May 8. Police did not specify where the camera was located in the restroom, or how it was discovered.

US Berkeley Police say that they have "a person of interest" in the case "who is no longer associated with UC Berkeley." They declined to provide additional details on the suspect as of publication time.

They did say, however, that maintenance staff will be checking all residence hall restrooms for other recording devices.

Police are eager to find any victims of the covert photographer, and ask anyone who might have used that bathroom in April or May to contact Detective Pete Odyniec at 510-642-1606 or to email him at odyniec@berkeley.edu.

Shortly After Instagram Buy, Facebook Launches New Camera App

Facebook launched its fourth iPhone app today, the Facebook camera. The app is solely focused on pictures, and will allow users to upload a bunch of pics at the same time as well as edit and format. "When you launch the app, you'll see a feed of just great photos from the people you care about. You can swipe to see more of any album or tap to enlarge an individual photo," notes Facebook.

But what about Instagram, which was recently purchased by social media giant for $1 billion? Well, according to Facebook, it will not harm the hipster camera device. LA Times reports that, while the new app wasn't developed by anyone on the Instagram team, fans of the hipster-filter camera device "need not worry as the company is saying the new app will not mean the end of Instagram." Uh huh.

Anyway, the new app will be available today for free in the iTunes Store. Watch their Google-esque ad for more details.

SFist loves cameras. Public, private, wherever, whenever -- we want them up, we want them rolling. So, we were tickled exuberant after hearing that San Francisco transit officials plan to install continuously-running cameras on Muni buses. The cameras would "trigger an alert every time a driver hits the brakes hard, swerves or gets into a collision," according to reports, and be placed inside and outside buses. If all goes according to plan, they will capture electrifying footage like this.

This plan will cost around $2 million, with an addition $400,000 a year going toward video monitoring. $129 million deficit be damned!

Although, sadly, not everyone is thrilled at the idea of Big Brother's continuing encroachment of Muni. James Dupre tells SF Examiner, "If you're in the public, you should not be afraid of being [videotaped] doing whatever you're going to do. Enough of that occurs already." Bah! What if all of us were being videotaped, God willing -- and no one watches? That's the real fear here.

Anyway, transit officials hope to get the cameras up by fall.

Camera + Sushi Boat = Fun

We know we're piling on the video clips tod...

misc

camera

film

fun

humor

sushi

sushi boat

Brock Keeling
