The Library Tower (AKA the U.S. Bank Tower) in Los Angeles could soon be the second tallest building west of the Mississippi thanks to San Francisco's proposed Transbay Terminal. While the Library Tower, located in downtown Los Angeles, stands at an alluring 1,018-feet tall, the Transbay Terminal is primed to win the measuring contest at 1,200-feet.

Claiming that his California Street Victorian was "part of his own personality" and that its "roots went all the way to Hell," it's fitting that Church of Satan founder Dr. Anton LaVey's black house turned into one ugly-ass condo. Don't get us wrong. We're not on some transplant-ish rant about the evils of condominiums or condo conversion; we'd gladly give up our drafty, earthquake damaged Victorian for some central heating, wall to wall carpeting, and choice views of all you peons below. But this? Is butt.

While crews repair a damaged cable, California Street cable cars will be down for the count today, but could return to service by early tomorrow. Sad, isn't it?

Last night a little before midnight, Paul David Addis was arrested outside of Grace Cathedral, suspected of trying to burn down the historic church down. It seems that his neighbor called the police last night after overhearing him say something to the effect of "the cathedral wasn’t going to be there anymore." Yikes.

Tonight, grab a 7:30 p.m. low cost ($4) lecture on planets, stars and brown dwarfs with Dr. Ray Jayawardhana at the JCC. We love the JCC space, because it's organized, clean, and spacious. There's a friendly vibe, too, but be prepared to pop your trunk for a bomb search if you park in the JCC lot. Origins of Planets and Brown Dwarfs at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California Street. Phone: 415-292-1233.

There's a move afoot to help save one of San Francisco's famed bars, the John Barleycorn on 1500 California Street. Apparently, after forty years or so of business, the new owner of the property wants it gone and won't even talk about renewing the new lease. A web site has been put up to help fight the power.

Hey, we're back from vacation! And we just missed the 5-foot sinkhole that opened up on California Street between 6th and 7th Avenues for New Year's Eve. Does anyone have pictures?

Hanging on a wall of the brand new Trader Vic's near Civic Center is a copy of the restaurant's very first menu, circa 1930's Oakland. Back in the day, prices for the vaguely Polynesian cuisine hovered between 50 cents and two bucks, and as we waited to be seated we watched a tall blonde woman in a black trench coat study the old menu. Eventually, she turned to her companion and exclaimed, "I can't believe how cheap this place is!"
