The Road to San Diego, at the SFIFF, is the story of Tati, from Pozo Azul, a small town in the Northeast Argentinian Misiones province (between Paraguay and Brazil), who embarks on a spiritual quest to deliver a timber statue of his hero and idol, the notorious soccer player, Diego Maradona, to Maradona himself.

Tati, who is suited day in and day out in a soccer jersey bearing Maradona’s number (10), and, like many Argentinians, worships Maradona. One day, during a torrential rainstorm, Tati discovers a very large tree root, which he convinces himself and many others (and even us along the way) resembles Maradona. A funny side note: when Tati brings the statue home, it’s not too popular with his three young children, who find the “tree” rather ominous.

We grew to appreciate through the film, which takes Tati on a very long, adventurous journey from Misiones to Buenos Aires, the massive rivalry between Maradona and the Brazilian soccer star, Pele. Tati’s Maradona statue opens doors and friendships along his journey (and closes some as well), and introduces us to a number of very colorful characters, including a Brazilian truckdriver who initially refuses Tati a ride because it would be sacrilegious given the driver’s Pele loyalty (note the proud and prominent display of Pele’s jersey in the cab of the truck). We also encounter “Gauchito Gil” followers, a former pop culture legend who’s become somewhat of a saint to some Argentinians, a mass of rural, small-town residents who have shut down a major thoroughfare en route to Buenos Aires to protest a business closing, numerous hysterical Maradona fans -- and not to mention the owls, parrots, chicks, and other wildlife along the way.

We were pumped to be headed to the SFIFF again this year with our friend, Liana, who’s from Brazil. We’ve seen several Brazilian films together at the festival over the years, and this year we had a number of good options, but decided on 12 Labours, a film by Ricardo Elias.

12 Labours is the story of Heracles, a young Brazilian boy, recently released from one of Sao Paulo’s notorious juvenile jails back onto the streets. With the help of his cousin, Heracles lands a job as one of the city’s numerous motorbike couriers, and (like his mythological namesake) is in no time dispatched on what becomes twelve jobs or tasks. After the film, we shared reactions with Liana and talked with her about how she thought 12 Labours compared to other Brazilian films, like City of God, Carandiru, Bus 174, and Favela Rising.

L: I really liked it and thought it reflected real lives and attitudes of Brazilians - it was sad, though. It seems that most of the Brazilian films that make it in the international arena are pretty much the same story (at least the ones I have seen, which I don't know are totally representative of the Brazilian film industry) ... a story of survival of poor people in Brazil ... but since most of the population lives in those circumstances, I guess those are the stories to tell. . . .

Picture it not as something you have to do because you have to be like everyone else, but as, well, kind of a way to travel around the world in a month without ever having to leave the city.

Here's what we mean. If there's a big game involving Italy, go to an Italian cafe in North Beach (Steps of Rome is SFist's fave place to watch the Azzurri) and watch the game from there. Places like Steps will wheel out a big screen TV and the game will be watched be actual, real Italians (not Italian wanna-bes who often frequent those places) who will spend the entire game talking Italian, drinking espressos, and genuflecting at the TV screen (we've seen it). Or for a big Brazilian game, go to a Brazilian restaurant/bar (Canto do Brasil or the South Beach Cafe might do the trick) and enjoy the drums, the passion, the scantily clad Brazilian women. And you have to go to an English Pub (Mad Dog in the Fog is THE place to be) to watch a big English match. One of our favorite sporting moments, like ever, was watching the epic England/Argentina game in '98: the game started at 12, we got there at 10, the bar was packed tight by 11, and by 11:30 the Brits started singing every English soccer song known to ever exist. It was more fun watching that game than any big Niners or Raiders game, partly because if we could squint we could easily picture ourselves in a London pub at that very moment.

The premise behind the Chinese Restaurants series is that the Canadian filmmaker, Cheuk Kwan, visits Chinese restaurants around the world and interviews the owners to find out how they ended up in their particular country. So Kwan has visited Chinese restaurants in Israel, one of the northernmost cities in Norway, India, and Cuba, among others. We are for not having this idea first.

In Latin Passions, Kwan stops by Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. Before we get started on the review, we should also just say that it was cruel of the SFIAAFF to screen this at 12:45 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon -- the audience audibly moaned in hunger as Kwan lovingly zoomed in on wokfuls of fried rice gleaming with egg, or the Peruvian-Chinese woman making Chinese sausage in her basement. Cruel, SFIAAFF, cruel!

Kwan's organizing principle seems to be that Chinese immigrants always have fascinating stories, ideally heard over a nice meal of steamed fish. He meets Peru's Martin Yan, watches the Brazilian World Cup, and practices his Argentinean tango, while listening to tales of swimming from the Cultural Revolution, Chinese workers building the trans-Andean railroad, and internationalism. The stories are always interesting, and the food always looks great.

Chinese Restaurants shows again at the Kabuki on Thursday at 7:15, but you'll need to wait for rush tickets as the showing is already sold out. Make sure you eat beforehand.

We tried to figure out what our favorite part was, but it was just so hard to choose. Was it Arnie's attempt at speaking Portuguese? Was it his dirty-rumba-dancing? Was it an obviously jacked up soon-to-be Governor in full Carnival regalia hopping around and screaming? Or was it his oh-so-obvious attempts to try and pick up both of his hot Brazilian escorts, with differing results. In fact, between the early 80's outfits and hair, gauzy cinematography, and cheesy pickup lines, the video often reminded us of one of those flicks they Skinemax shows.

And as befitting its' attempts at being a travelogue, we learned some things too. Like how to say goodbye in Portuguese. Or what makes a good Carnival. And last but certainly not least, that Arnie's an ass man.

In fact, in watching this, we couldn't help but feel a swirling of pride in our state. After all, Virginia has a new Governor whose deeply religious. Arkansas has a Governor who lost over 100 pounds by dieting. And California? Our Governor's an ass-grabber.

Brings a tear to our eye.

This past weekend we made our way down to Long Beach for the Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships. A competition between the best submission wrestlers, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practioners, and Judo players in the world, the combatants win by submission, points or referee decision. Drawing a diverse crowd, we found ourselves thisclose to BJJ fan and studentJoe Rogan, and we hear Julia Roberts fan and student Jason Patric was also in the audience.

Being the SFist that we are, our attention was focused on Bay Area-based fighters Jake Shields and Gibert Melendez both of whom represented the Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu Acadamy in Pleasant Hill. Jake Shields is a "no holds barred" fighting champion and winner of multiple jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling tounaments at a national level. Shields took on Cameron Earle, a black belt under Ralph Gracie, who has schools in San Francisco and Mountain View.

If you'd been listening on Friday night, you'd have heard the sounds of two drum kits, funky bass, plenty of moogs and DJ's to scramble the sound, and one helluva show. Amon Tobin, Roots of Orchis, Tussle, and TelephoneJimJesus played at Bimbo's 365 for the Noise Pop festival.

In the thick of Amon Tobin's set, in the middle towards the back of the crowd, it sounded like everything we love about Brazilian music. Hip-hop infused with samba, baked with drum and bass and given a good shake. People were dancing in San Francisco. Anyone who has been to Bimbo's knows how rare this is.

We missed TelephoneJimJesus after a dispute with the cab driver, but came in time to catch Roots of Orchis, who were set up slightly skewed to the left of the stage, with the wall behind them padded in orange foam. They played a midtempo set of bass-driven lushness, reminicient of M83 with the weirdness dialed down and the crunch firmly in place. This was probably the most impressive set of the night, as all members were completely in tune with one another, and no one in the audience knew whether to dance, sit down, or smoke a little more.

Tussle faced off with two drum kits facing each other and a bass player who seemed giddy to be up on stage after what they said was 8 months off the road. Hearing live drummers of that caliber always sends a little shiver up the spine - how, exactly, do two skinny white boys crank out beats that fast, and by hand?

Shows like this breathe tunefulness back into the all-too-constrictive moniker "drum and bass," and re-create it as a living form of music that's still making strides.

Nothing the like Jesus' birthday around the corner to get juries in the hangin' mood, apparently. We understand that getting home to your family for the holidays after a long sequestration would be a priority, but they could decide just as quickly to let them rot in a cell, tortured by their guilt (and fellow inmates). We sure think that any extended stay in San Quentin or Pelican Bay would probably be worse than a quick and relatively painless death.

Earlier this week there were cheers and high-fives from the crowd waiting outside the Redwood City courthouse where Scott Peterson was given the death sentence. Classy! Nothing like doling out the ultimate penalty to fire up a crowd. We hope they were all excited over what this could mean for Ben Affleck's career as a dramatist, and not over the the prospect of yet more death in this tragedy.

Shortly thereafter, an Alameda County jury handed down the death sentence following the conviction of Stuart "The Sausage King of San Leandro" Alexander in the murder of three meat inspectors. Of course both men should be on death row for a good, long time while their appeals wind their way through the judicial system.

Last night lawyers in Martinez rested their cases during the sentencing phase for Glenn Helzer, convicted along with his brother Justin of murdering and dismembering five people during a methamphetamine and motivational group-fueled rampage to get money in order to save the world by conquering the Mormon Church with Brazilian orphans. The jurors will now debate amongst themselves whether or not Glenn, portrayed during Justin's trial as a manipulative mastermind, deserves to fry.

Happy holidays from SFist.

Jiu-Jitsu is not the most thriling spectator sport ever (in fact, we've been known to describe it as "boring"), as it's basically wrestling that gets nasty. Originally a Japanese art revolving around joint locks, it was modified by Carlos Gracie in the mid-1920s. The art gained greater prominence in the 1990s with the advent of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, a competition in which experts in different martial arts were pitted against one another with very few rules. Royce Gracie (a descendant of Carlos) was dominant in the early years of the UFC, bringing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu message to the masses.
