Looks like the Olympic committee is taking a red eye. They said they'd fly from the site of the decision, which was in Denver, to the city with the winning bid. That's Boston, as just announced.

Boston will square off against cities like Rome, Berlin and perhaps Paris, so maybe they'll get to feel the relief most of us do right now when they likely come up short. They might have been as ambivalent as us, anyway.

So, the rendering of that giant stadium thing? Don't worry about it.

Despite sharp opponents in the Bay, including an official anti-Olympics campaign, and farther afield, the "just say no" advice from the Nation, surely some have just had their Olympic dreams extinguished. Sorry, guys (you too, Willie).

Our city placed its bid in November and had banked some transportation improvements on getting it. There will be a next time, but I think we're safe for a while.

San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Boston have been named as the US Olympic Committee's short list of cities under consideration as the host to be named in a US bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

According to one or more anonymous sources, who spoke with the Associated Press and the Boston Globe, at a meeting Tuesday the USOC pruned the list of possible US host cities down to these four, cutting San Diego and Dallas (New York and Philadelphia had initially expressed interest, but decided against competing in the 2024 race).

The US Olympic committee has since confirmed those reports in a noon press release, quoting USOC CEO Scott Blackmun as saying that “Boston, LA, San Francisco and Washington have each given us reason to believe they can deliver a compelling and successful bid, and we look forward to continuing to explore the possibilities as we consider 2024.”

Out of that list, only Los Angeles has Olympic experience, having hosted the 1932 and 1984 games.

Of course, this is just one step on the road to the Olympics: First, the USOC has to decide if they even want to try to get the 2024 games for the US. The competition is stiff: Paris, Rome, Doha and Istanbul are are reportedly in the running, and the International Olympic Committee (which makes the final decision) has long been mulling a first-time Games in Africa.

Take that, along with America's recent tough track record with the IOC, who passed over NY for the 2012 Games and dissed Chicago for Rio for the 2016 event, and it's clear that the USOC has a lot of thinking to do. A final decision from the IOC on who will host the 2024 games will be announced in 2017.

In the interim, the USOC is expected to mull their bid for the next six months, and will visit each of the possible hosts, and meet with local officials to determine which city might be in the best shape to host the Games. That's where San Francisco might be able to demonstrate an edge: as Bay Area preparations mount for the 2016 Super Bowl, this might be SF's chance to prove that the area can handle an event of that magnitude.

And Mayor Ed Lee appears to feel he's up to the challenge—in a written statement, Lee says that "For the last year, a small group of civic leaders with deep Olympic ties and experience have held quiet, preliminary discussions with the USOC about the City and region’s potential to once again bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and return them to the United States in 2024...I enthusiastically support taking the next step toward exploring a potential San Francisco Bay Area bid for the 2024 Games."

The Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts, has kind of a fuzzy grasp on San Francisco history. During an appearance on a local political quiz show, he was asked to name the mayor who was killed on the same night as Harvey Milk. Mayor Setti Warren fumbled, "Dianne Feinstein."

Whoops! The correct answer is George Moscone. Dianne, of course, is still very much alive and kicking. In fact, she just introduced a senate bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, so yay for that.

But wait a minute. Back up. Massachusetts makes its politicians go on TV to answer historical trivia questions? That's even better than Question Time.

To be fair, Warren quickly corrected himself, and the only people outside of San Francisco who actually know about that sort of thing are homosexuals and historians (same thing, really).

But that didn't stop the state Republican Party from jumping down his throat, so to speak, with a mocking press release, which would have been quite a zing if they hadn't managed to misspelled the mayor's name as "Mascone." So everyone's a loser! Everyone, that is, except Dianne Feinstein, whose immortal soul will live on forever.

'Craigslist Killer' Into Male Genetalia?

According to new reports, Philip Markoff, AKA the Craigslist Killer, accused of murdering 26-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman, also went after bi...

SF News

Boston

Craigslist killer

gay

transsexual

Brock Keeling

According to new reports, Philip Markoff, AKA the Craigslist Killer, accused of murdering 26-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman, also went after biological men. An anonymous source in Boston told NBC News "I posted an ad on Craigslist under 'males for transsexuals' ... "That's where he found me." Though the two never met, Markoff replied to the tranny delight using the e-mail address sexaddict5385@yahoo.com, saying, "I am a 22 y/o grad student. 6'3", 205, good build, blond/blue eyes ... let me know what else you want to see or know about me." In response to the Craiglist Killer's murder spree -- a really unfair sobriquet; but nice try, MSM -- Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster told CNN that "the company feels 'terribly' that an accused killer in Boston allegedly used the online service to target his victims." The Craigslist killer, for those of you who don't know, used the 'erotic service' section of the popular ad site to lure his victims to their horrific deaths. In response to a series of e-mailed questions from the Globe, Buckmaster also went on to say "I would not describe any section of our site as 'sex related.'" Which? Is arguable, to say the least. All of this stems from Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal more or less placing most of the blame on Craigslist for the killings, instead of one man's disturbed mind.

Hey Mush, Your Celtics Won the NBA Championship

(By Joe Kukura)

SF News

basketball

Boston

celtics

championship

NBA

Bay Area Sports

Brock Keeling

(By Joe Kukura)

Congratulations, all of you Boston expats out there. As of this morning, your Celtics are the NBA’s newly-crowned 2008 World Champions. You represent yourselves disproportionately well in Bay Area sports bars and events, yet there is sometimes a perception that we f*cking hate you. That may be, but with last night’s 131-92 demolition of the Lakers, you have acquired another trophy for your impressive collection and did to Kobe Bryant what the Eagle County, Colorado court system couldn’t do.

It appeared to get easier for your Celtics as the playoffs went on. You had your doubts when the Hawks (!) and LeBron each took you to the brink… but the Pistons were misfiring, Ray-Ray found his groove with the addition of that funky-ass arm warmer device, and you have established Kobe as the "greatest Jordan fraud of all time". It was a testament to that storied New England perseverance, and your persistence of faith has paid off grandly.

Oh, and one additional word of encouragement for you, Boston fans… 18-1!

Super Smashing Tourney

For those of you into gaming, or at least like to blow off some steam with your Wii (tee hee), we found out through Gamingbits.com that San Fra...

misc

Angeles

Best Buy

Boston

Los

Los Angeles

New York

Nintendo

San Francisco

Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros

the game

US

Wii

Wii Remote

SFist_Dianne

Tournaments will be held in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, with the winners of each city going to finals in New York. Just some random scribbling on a game that is still reverberating through our hungover, overstuffed brains....

-One of our pet peeves in any sort of sports movies/TV show is that no matter how realistic the movie/TV show is, every game shown features a crazy upset that climaxes with a crazy, totally unrealistic play. It’s true of the otherwise seriously realistic "Friday Night Lights." But that game? That game actually was like how it was in the movies. A crazy upset...a crazy finale...and that totally insanely crazy play in which Eli Manning somehow eluded every Patriot defender and half the Pats bench to throw that hopeless quacking duck of a pass that David Tyree somehow, inexplicably caught off of somebody's helmet.

And that's why we watch sports.

The other great thing about the game is that if the Pats had won, the game would have merely been remembered as the final victory of the Best. Team Ever. But with the upset, the game will now be seen as maybe one the biggest, greatest, most super stupendously games ever. Crushing defeats by supposed juggernauts will do that. Plus, anything that wipes the smirk off of Belichik's and Brady's face is worth it. Not to mention the smirk of every douchey frat-boy who discovered a deep love of the Red Sox just over the past three years. Hell, even every damn smug Boston sports fan. As Nelson Muntz would say "ha-ha!"

Around the Sports Dial

Here's a roundup of sports news

SF News

A's

Barry Bonds

baseball

basketball

Boston

Chris Webber

Don Nelson

Golden State Warriors

Japan

MLB

Nets

Oakland A's

Part I

Red Sox

steroids

The Dubs

the game

Tom Brady

Warriors

Jon

The Dubs beat the Nets last night, 121-119 in a game featuring a 22-0 run by the Warriors and another furious comeback. The big news, however, is the possibility of Chris Webber saddling up and playing for the Warriors again. For those who don't remember, Nellie Part I was all set up to be a glorious, wonderful time for the Warriors until then-Warrior Chris Webber decided to sulk after Nellie made him cry and forced a trade which eventually led to Nellie quitting and thus sinking the team into their decade long run of epic futility. We personally always thought that the Warriors ineptness should have been referred to as the "Curse of CWebb" but nobody asked us.

To start off the 2008 season, the A's will be sent off to Japan to play the Red Sox. To honor the game, MLB got a deal with a sponsor, EMC, to place the company's logo on jerseys, and yes, it's a further encroachment of advertising into the sports landscape. Funny thing, though-- the ad will be placed on the Sox' jerseys but not the A's. In other words, EMC didn't really care if their name got associated with the A's and if you think that's a diss you would be correct. Guess the A's aren’t big in Japan.

Hell, maybe it was part of the trade. Or maybe Pacers President Larry Bird called up Mully and asked for a favor. Well, it's one way of looking at it. The Warriors rushed off to a record breaking first half as they made twelve steals in the first quarter but couldn’t hold onto a 4th quarter 17-point lead. The downfall came when the Beard went out with fouls, which led to a Pacers rally and then another rally as a close game became a wee bit of a beatdown.

- As the Pats run their way through the NFL, something that is doing nothing but making us queasy at the thought of it encouraging more douchebag frat boys to wear Boston sports paraphernalia, there's been a lot of discussion over just how good this Pats team is in comparison to other storied NFL teams. The general consensus is that they're good, very good, partly because the players are so much bigger and faster than they were back in the day. And by back in the day, they even mean those early 90's Cowboys teams. Just out of curiosity, have we evolved such that in just fifteen years, we've gotten that much bigger and faster? Or could it be for some other reason? Hmm....what could it be?

Week Around the -Ists

Londonist pondered who might be the next sponsors of the London Eye and whether or not readers would be willing to donate £1,000 ...

misc

Adrian Fenty

Ass Burn Hot Sauce

Austinist

Big Daddy

Boston

Bronson Arroyo

Chicagoist

Cleveland

Cleveland Indians

Cloverfield

contest

DCist

District

D\.C\.
Hutchinson's music walks a fine line between rock, folk-pop, powerpop and sometimes even jazz and funk. We think he sounds like a cross between Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz and Josh Kelley. The Boston singer-songwriter is destined for success with this strong of a debut. There's definite soul to his music - something that is usually lost in most pop albums.
They visited parties of all sorts and took pictures all over including celebrations in WeHo, the Hollywood Hills, in Museums (very fun costumes) and of course, with the Porn Industry. And remember Charlie Manson? Find out what's up with his children now. In sports, the big news is Joe Torre as the new Dodgers manager. And in Hollywood, the big news is the writers strike. Also, check out interviews with Richard M.
