Two people were transported to the hospital Tuesday, victims of separate collisions with vehicle drivers that left them injured.

In the first case, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca says that a 32-year-old female cyclist was struck by a hit-and-run driver at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of Bay and Kearny Streets.

Rueca says that the cyclist was headed west on Bay when the driver of "a white vehicle" tried to pass her, and struck her instead.

The cyclist was knocked off her bike and injured, Rueca says.

The driver kept on going after striking the woman, continuing to travel west on Bay.

The cyclist was transported to San Francsico General Hospital for treatment. According to Rueca, a description of the suspect vehicle has been put out to officers, in hopes that the driver might be tracked down and prosecuted. The cyclist was transported to San Francisco Genera Hospital, for treatment of injuries police say are not life-threatening.

Just a few hours later, at 10:09 p.m., another collision occurred, this time at Market and Third Streets.

This time, police say, a 26-year-old man "fell into the street" and was struck by a passing vehicle. The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, with injuries police say are not considered life-threatening.

Rueca says that the driver remained at the scene, and cooperated with investigators with SFPD's traffic collision unit, who are working to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

According to the San Francisco Police department, the driver that they say ran over a cyclist after a brief verbal altercation during the Thursday commute is 18-year-old Oakland resident Taj'zanae Zakira Thomas.

As reported Friday, police say that at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, after a near-miss with Thomas' red Hyundai Accent, a 26-year-old male cyclist "banged on the window" of the vehicle, then passed the car and took his place in the lane in front of her near Fourth and Market Streets.

Police say that Thomas then ran the cyclist "over...with her vehicle" in what police characterize as an "Assault (Vehicle vs. Bicycle)"

According to the LA Times, Thomas "hit the man’s bicycle, knocking him over. She then drove directly over him and paused."

Witnesses, including volunteers from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition who were facilitating Thursday's Bike to Work Day commute, told police that Thomas then attempted to flee, but was blocked from doing so by the crowd that had gathered after the collision.

Thomas was arrested at the scene, police say, and was booked into SF County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. According to a spokesperson with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, she has since been released on bail.

One cyclist is dead and another injured after two separate vehicle collisions Sunday. In one, a bike rider was killed beneath the tires of a Muni bus; and in the other a cyclist and horse trailer collided, leaving her injured.

According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Grace Gatpandan, it was 3:22 on Sunday afternoon when police were called to the 500 block of Market Street (which is between Sutter and First Streets), on reports of a collision between a Muni bus and a cyclist.

"At this time," Gatpandan says, "it appears the both the bicyclist and bus were were traveling westbound on Market Street when the bicyclist lost control and collided with the bus."

Hoodline reports that the bike rider "maneuvered out of the sharrow lane to ride between two buses," and quotes SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose as saying that "It does not appear the bicyclist was traveling in a bike lane." Which is an odd thing to say since, as Hoodline notes, "there is not a bike lane on that section of Market Street. Instead, one lane is designated to be shared by cars, Muni buses and cyclists."

After the collision, the rider, who Gatpandan describes as "a white male, 48 years old, and he was wearing his helmet," was wedged beneath the tires of the bus with which he had collided. He died at the scene. KQED has since identified him as Mark Heryer, a 48-year-old Berkeley resident.

"The cause of the collision is under investigation and no determination of fault has been made," Gatpandan says. "Investigators will take into account the time of day, road conditions, traffic conditions, as well as any video surveillance which may have captured the incident."

ABC7 reports that as part of the investigation, "people aboard busses were offloaded and questioned to see if they saw anything."

"We're pulling that vehicle as well to look at that video, but this is the coach where contact was made and we're working with the police department to do everything we can to find out what happened to deal with this the best way we can," Rose told ABC7.

The driver will also undergo drug and alcohol testing, as is protocol in all Muni collisions.

Gatpandan emphasized to CBS5 that "officers will conduct a thorough investigation because 'the victim can’t speak for himself.'"

"Don't try to pass a bus," Gatpandan also said to Hoodline, "especially in the streetcar lane. Stay to the right."

Sunday afternoon, the SFMTA released a "Statement of Condolences from SFMTA Director of Transportation, Edward D. Reiskin," which read in part that the transit agency "wish[es] to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist who lost his life in a bus collision along Market Street late this afternoon."

"Our agency will work closely with SFPD to ascertain all facts of this truly unfortunate event," the statement read, noting that "The SFMTA adopted a Vision Zero Policy in 2014, with the goal of eliminating all traffic deaths in San Francisco by 2024. We are committed to working with our partners to make San Francisco streets safer, while educating the public on traffic safety, enforcement of traffic laws and prioritizing the necessary resources that implement life-saving initiatives."

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition also released a statement on the fatality, saying that "We cannot achieve Vision Zero -- our City's goal to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2024 -- without the three E's: engineering, education and smart enforcement."

"Today's tragedies demonstrate yet again that our City's elected leaders and agencies owe it to the growing number of people here who bike, and to the families of those who can no longer join them, to redouble their efforts and investments to deliver engineering solutions without delay, expand safety education, and ensure that the SFPD's priorities honor yesterday's tragedies and data through smart enforcement tomorrow," the SFBC wrote.

The SFBC uses the plural because less than 30 minutes later, there was a second collision between a cyclist and a vehicle. At 4:01 p.m., Gatpandan says, police were called to Chestnut Street and The Embarcadero.

When officers arrived, they discovered that a 46-year-old female cyclist "had collided with a horse trailer, suffering wounds to the head."

The cyclist was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Gatpandan says. Hoodline reports that Gatpandan says she had been wearing a helmet, which "was a 'huge factor' in the woman's injuries not being life threatening."

"The driver of the truck remained on scene and is cooperating with police. At this time, investigators have determined drugs and alcohol are not a factor," Gatpandan says, but did not have additional details of that collision as of publication time.

Gatpandan says that both of these collision cases are "open and active," so anyone with information on either is encouraged to contact SFPD's Anonymous Tip Line at 415-575-4444 or to text a tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.

Though San Francisco's Park Police District has only had its current leader for a couple months, folks pedaling through his territory had better make sure they follow every single rule and regulation — Captain John Sanford's already fed up with the area's scofflaw cyclists, and is ready to start meting out some justice.

Sanford abruptly took the top position at SFPD's Park Station at the end of March, saying in a message sent to community members that "I will encourage and embrace collaboration and partnership with the community. My goal is to foster a sustainable process with continuity, which will assist us with reducing crime and improving the quality of life for those who dwell within our borders.”

Apparently, one quality of life area in which Sanford sees room for improvement are bicyclists who break the rules. Reporting from Tuesday's Park Station community meeting, Hoodline says that Sanford has vowed "to step up traffic enforcement where bicycles are concerned," after growing aghast at some riders' disrespect for the law.

"I'm in an unmarked black police car, and they're just zipping past," Sanford said of bike riders.

"Bicyclists are required to follow the rules of the road...There's a thing called a stop sign that bicycles are supposed to stop at."

Bold remarks given the vocal nature of San Francisco's cycling community! But Sanford isn't afraid of those folks, saying "I am not too shy to say that it is a problem," and telling any cyclists who might be listening to "tell your friends to slow, stop and obey."

Sanford says that so far, 38 tickets have been handed out to cyclists this year, and riders should expect that number to grow. Park Station will deploy, Hoodline reports, "traffic enforcement teams [that] will consist of bicycle officers and marked police vehicles," all focused on catching bike riders who violate the rules of the road.

And before you ask, Sanford says that we shouldn't question the use of Park Station's notoriously limited resources for this activity.

According to Sanford, law-breaking cyclists "present a hazard for many people," and given that "the protection of life" is his top job, an enforcement effort like this one makes all the sense in the world.

BART Thinks Signs Will Keep Cyclists From Flouting Bike Rules

Cyclists who bring their bikes on BART are breaking the rules.
Back in December, 2013, when BART ended their ban on bikes on their trains during rush hour, they told cycle-toting riders that there were still some rules that they need to follow. Now, some eight-odd months later, BART says that many cyclists aren't following those rules...but hastens to add that the transit agency, itself, might be to blame.

When BART's board voted last year to amend the bike rules, they agreed that:

During peak commute hours (7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) bikes aren't allowed in the first three train cars

No bikes will allowed in the first train car at any time

Bikes are never allowed on crowded trains

Bicyclists must yield priority seating to seniors and those with disabilities

Bikes are not to block doorways or aisles

Bikes are not allowed on escalators.

Sounds pretty doable, right (if it's not, please correct me in the comments)? But, according to the Examiner, cyclists persist in breaking those rules.

Before you scroll to the bottom of the article to post your angry remarks about cyclists, slow your roll: BART is taking the rap for this one.

Steve Beroldo, BART's bike program manager, told the Ex that "It's on us ... to do a little bit more communication about the rule...I think it's fairly clear that not everybody knows about it."

BART's plan to save folks from ignorance of the bike regulations? Signs that will be posted inside BART cars. But even signs come with their own set of challenges. As BART has a total of 11 rules for cyclists (that's one more than God gave Moses, for those keeping track), that's a lot of reading, Beroldo says.

"Car cards are a little challenging. We don't want the print to be too small...We would have to do a couple cards that highlight rules that we want people to be most aware of."

Multiple signs! Finally, something to read when your phone battery dies.

"We have bait bikes deployed all over the city. Our bikes have trackers. You steal our bikes and we will definitely come for them," SFPD Bike Theft Unit's warning shot declares.
An effort is underway to stop 20 blocks of much-needed bike lanes from possibly being installed along Polk Street. It's a tentative plan under serious consideration from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Tinged with hyperbole, the above flyer care of the Coalition to Save Polk Street was spotted along Polk. It urges people to "STOP the radical agenda of the SFMTA." (Oh dear.) And on March 18, a meeting will be held at It's a Grind in an effort to squash cycling and pedestrian improvements along the increasingly twee-ified strip.

In actuality, the bike lane project won't be 20 blocks. In fact, "it is likely to be limited to a shorter stretch of the street." Leah Shahum, executive officer of the SFBC, told the Chronicle that, while the proposal for Polk Street has yet to be selected, it would focus on improving both bicycle and pedestrian safety -- two issues lacking on Polk.

The SF Bicycle Coalition asked people to fill out a survey about cycling on Polk Street and about this rendering of a bike lane. When asked which factors make bike rides on Polk unsafe or uncomfortable, or make riders less inclined to take Polk, the top 5 responses were:

72%: Not enough separation from vehicles
45%: The roadway is uneven and bumpy
44%: The bikeway is inadequate or missing
30%: There are too many double-parked vehicles
26%: The light timing slows me down

When asked to divulge what survey part of the bike lane rendering they liked best, the top responses were:

91%: Bikeway separated from motor vehicles
62%: Green treatment of bikeway
44%: Widened sidewalks
34%: Reduction in the number of automobiles on the road

More information on bike safety along Polk can be found at SFBike.org.

On Friday, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Peter Busch lifted the city's bike injunction. What does this mean? It means that, more or less, San Francisco will get to paint more bike lanes on city streets, effectively making bike riding a bit more safer.

"We are celebrating San Francisco's freedom to once again make streets safer for everyone and look forward to real improvements on the streets in a matter of days," Renée Rivera, executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, explained to Streetsblog. "This is the first time in San Francisco's history that this many bike lane projects are approved and ready to be striped. These long-awaited improvements will help growing numbers of people feel more confident, comfortable and safe when they bike to shop, to work and to play."

Sorry, Rob.

Anyway, this is good news. It will help keep the city's healthiest mode of transportation (next to walking) safe. The first post-injunction bike lanes will appear on Townsend, Laguna Honda and North Point.
