Ever wonder what this website would look like if it were written in the 1860s? Well, first of all, it'd probably only be a weekly, and when we complained about the cost of mass transit, we'd be talking pennies a ride! Anyway, back then, more than 814,000 people were living in New York City's Manhattan, many in the slums of Five Points, with communities starting to emerge in the wilderness above 42nd Street. Click through for a look at what life in New York City was like 150 years ago...

Over at SF Appeal, Jackson West has word that Mission SF Federal Credit Union offers bike loans to those in dire need to two wheels. "They'll loan up to $2,500, which could buy you quite the performance machine, but $800 is enough to get you a basic single-speed from the folks at Mission Bicycle Company and quite a bit of ride nearby at Valencia Cyclery," West explains. "And $93 a month isn't that much more than the full-rate Fast Pass from Muni, frankly." Hear, hear. The only catch is that you must live in specific neighborhoods to take advantage: opening an account is available to those living in Mission, Excelsior and Bayview neighborhoods.

Trader Joe's Remodels, Downgrades Bike Rack

misc

bicycle

bike plan

rack

Trader Joe's

SFist_Dan

We biked up to the in-the-throes-of-remodeling Masonic/Geary Trader Joe's the other day, laughing at the poor people who waited in line in their cars. We cruised up to the little bike rack plaza, expecting to lock up at the normal, wavy, lock-eight-bikes-to-it rack like they have at the public library. But...they changed the rack to the ineffectual spoke variety that they had at our junior high school! See, the problem is that it's pretty much impossible to lock more than just a wheel to this kind of rack, unless you've got one of those long cable locks that local bike thieves laugh at evilly, twirl their mustaches, and cut through with a pair of nail clippers.

The photo above shows the practical limit for this rack. Two bikes. Why the change? Is the store in the pocket of the myriad enemies of the Bike Plan, who constantly scheme to make cycling in our fair city even more difficult? Or is TJs making an implicit assumption that the parking monitor will stop anyone who whips off a front wheel and makes off with a bike?

Photo du Jour 116

This is all kinds of genius, here. If you're done with your pagan tree-worship holiday, head on over to MeTransCo's 511 Survey, and let them know just how bad they suck. 'Tis the season! You could win an iPod, as if you didn't already have four or five of them already.

The MTC is interested in how people use their services (if at all) -- for example, which of 511's many sites do you use most often? Or were you, like us, totally unaware that 511 even HAS multiple sites? Apparently they consider bicycling.511.org to be totally different from transit.511.org. Because nobody EVER mixes multiple forms of transit! That's like transportation-miscegenation! Which would be an awesome name for a Schoolhouse Rock song.

Anyway, go give 'em a piece of your mind. Let them know what you think of their worse-than-Duluth trip planner, and their circa-1995 mapping tech. And also how they STILL don't use Nextbus info. And how's about that navigation! No sir, not confusing at all. The holidays are a stressful time, and this is a great chance to let off some steam.

-- 17-year-old Rosie Blanckenburg left home on her bicycle for Berkeley High at 8 a.m. yesterday morning, and never showed up for class. According to SFGate, "a check of recent Internet blog entries by Blanckenburg indicated that she was 'possibly depressed.'" Kensington Police Chief Greg Harman says that "there's no reason to believe there was foul play." As of now, anyway.

-- Nina Reiser's children call her "a liar" and "a thief that stole their dad's money." Ouch. Good luck with that, Nina.

The assailant is currently in police custody.

SFist Photo: SFBC's Winterfest 2007 a Huge Success

Photos from the San Francisco Bike Coalition's Winterfest

Arts & Entertainment

Andy Thornley

bicycle

Bicycle Coalition

bike

Jim Herd

Pics

Ross Mirkarimi

San Francisco

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition

sanfranciscobikecoalition

Supervisor Mirkarimi

Tom Ammiano

winterfest

Jim

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition put on another well-attended fundraising party last night. Winterfest 07 is ably described by Tyche Hendricks here.

"Artists are encouraged to submit small format multiples--whether that be a series of hand-made paintings or a stack of production run postcards." Plus, this is the perfect SF-y place to go to buy your holiday cards. The postcard kickoff goes from 6-9p at the Lab; free admission. Also, cash/checks accepted; $20 minimum for VISA/MC purchases.

-- The Music Lovers: Described as "grown-up pop" and "like a Britpop Phil Spector," this indie-rock outfit will charm the pants right off you or (better yet) your date. Along with the Young Moderns, Raymonda, and DJs Jun & Ping, they go on at 9 p.m. at Amnesia; $6.

An added bonus: aside from a pre-nose job Jennifer Grey and pre-facelift Patrick Swayze, the film also brought together the awesome talents that are Jerry Orbach (RIP!) and Kelly Bishop [Baby's blue-collar hating parents]). Screens at 9 p.m. at the Castro Theatre; $6-9.

-- Amy Woloszyn's Fundraiser: Local cyclist, artist, and active Bike Coalition member was "run over by a drunk driver while riding her bicycle three weeks ago ... on Capp Street at 23rd Street." She received fractured skull, lacerated liver, cuts and bruises. That sucks. So, help out a sister out at her benefit featuring art, service auction (i.e., paintings, massages, etc.), a bake sale, music performances, and more. Starts at 6 p.m. at Balazo Gallery; donations accepted.
