A shootout between SFPD officers and a pair of robbery suspects Sunday night left both an officer and one of the suspects critically wounded, and the second suspect was arrested.

It's not clear what the original crime was that occurred, but according to a release from the SFPD, the department was alerted to a robbery suspect's vehicle heading into San Francisco via the Bay Bridge at around 10:29 pm Sunday.

Officers spotted the suspect vehicle traveling on Fifth Street in SoMa, near Folsom Street, and attempted to pull the car over in the area of Mission and First streets.

The vehicle proceeded to flee from officers and led them on a chase into the Bayview District, where the car reportedly "became disabled" in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue.

"When officers encountered the vehicle, the driver opened fire on SFPD officers and struck one officer multiple times," the SFPD says. "During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred."

The suspect who was driving the vehicle and allegedly fired the shots attempteed to flee the scene on the foot, the department says, but was apprehended nearby. The passenger in the vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries in the shootout.

As Mission Local reports via ShotSpotter data, a total of 19 shots were fired from "high-capacity" weapons.

The police officers' union issued a statement Monday morning saying, "The San Francisco Police Officers Association is profoundly relieved to learn that the San Francisco police officer who was shot multiple times in the line of duty Sunday night is expected to survive. The officer is currently in surgery."

Neither the names of the suspects nor the officers involved have been released.

The incident will be investigated by the San Francisco Police Department Investigative Services Division, as well as the District Attorney's Office and the SFPD Internal Affairs Division.

Four individuals have taken guilty pleas in connection with a 2023 drive-by shooting in San Francisco's Bayview District that left one person injured.

Two of the men involved in the September 7, 2023 drive-by shooting have already been sentenced, and the remaining two have now entered guilty pleas and will be sentenced this week, as the San Francisco District Attorney's Office announced Monday.

31-year-old Cory Martin-Turner and 32-year-old Shaquille Dumetz each pleaded guilty and were sentenced in December. Dumetz pleaded to attempted murder and was sentenced to seven years, and Martin-Turner pleaded guilty to assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and he was sentenced to six years.

The remaining two have taken pleas, Phillip Stewart, 33, and Jahari Oliver, 28, have also pleaded to assault with a semiautomatic weapon, and will likely also get six-year sentences at a hearing on Wednesday.

"These convictions and sentences hold these men accountable for a brazen mid-afternoon drive-by shooting," said SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins in a statement to reporters, per KRON4. "Although, I am grateful no lives were lost in this incident, it should be clear to them that gun violence will never be normalized nor tolerated in San Francisco. Anyone with the intention of coming to San Francisco to engage in violence, with the belief that they will get off with no consequences is mistaken.”

The four men were accused of leaving a residence in Oakland, together, and traveling to San Francisco in two vehicles, with Martin-Turner driving a Hyundai, and Stewart driving an Infiniti G37. An hour later, the group then showered bullets into a home on Donner Avenue while shooting at the victim, who was reportedly talking to a person in a car on the street at the time. The victim was struck in the thigh and no one else was injured.

The FBI, Oakland police, and ATF aided in the investigation, which involved the execution of search warrants in seven locations around the Bay in February 2024. Those searches led to the seizure of multiple illegal firearms, including eight handguns and a rifle.

In her comments, Jenkins added, "We have seen an uptick in the regional nature of these particular types of crimes. I think much of that is linked to both affordability issues here in San Francisco, gentrification, [and] other factors that have caused people to move outside of San Francisco into other parts of the Bay Area, but yet their criminal activity is still connected to San Francisco."

A new sculpture makes the Bayview’s Southeast Treatment Plant easier on the eyes, but more importantly, a $717 million upgrade just made it easier on the nose for people who live near SF’s largest wastewater treatment plant.

San Franciscans may be more aware of the Lake Merced-area wastewater treatment plant known as the Oceanside Treatment Plant because of a whimsical 2008 protest ballot measure effort to name that sewage plant after George W. Bush. But the Bayview’s Southeast Treatment Plant is a far more significant sewage treatment plant, purifying a full 80% of SF’s wastewater.

And the place just received a $717 million upgrade that was completed in September. Part of that upgrade was a 335-foot long sculpture by artist Norie Sato, intended to make the exterior less ugly. But another aspect to the upgrade was the addition of new equipment to “significantly reduce odors for the Bayview neighborhood.”

So did it work? Now four months after the upgrade was completed, Mission Local reports that Bayview residents do feel that the wastewater treatment plant smells substantially less awful.

Or rather, it’s an improvement, but not necessarily a complete elimination of the foul smells. “It’s not smelly all the time,” Alijah Mestayer-Orollo, who works in the neighborhood, told Mission Local. “But there’s definitely a couple days in a row where it’s still hella smelly.”

The plant was built in 1952, and mitigation of odors was simply not considered an important factor at the time. Whereas now, the Southeast Treatment Plant handles 45 million gallons of wastewater generally every day, and during peak storm times, can handle 250 million gallons daily. Given those volumes of wastewater, the relief to Bayview residents should be substantial.

Nearly three years to the day after its highly touted grand opening, the Bayview Lucky Supermarket is closing permanently on November 1, and leaving a big grocery-store size hole in the food desert neighborhood.

People have referred to SF’s Bayview District as a "food desert" for years, and that is also the actual assessment of the area from the federal government. While the US Department of Agriculture technically no longer uses the term “food desert,” they’ve replaced it with the term “low-income, low-access” food area, and gave the Bayview that designation in 2019. That’s why it was a big deal when a Lucky Supermarket opened at 3801 Third Street in the Bayview Plaza, a spot formerly occupied by a Walgreens, on October 26, 2022.

But it will barely survive just three years. KPIX has confirmed District 10 Supervisor Shamann Walton’s Thursday Instagram post that the Bayview Lucky Supermarket is closing, effective November 1, 2025.

The Chronicle also got confirmation from a store manager and a spokesperson from Lucky’s parent corporation Save Mart. KPIX additionally reports that employees of the store will be offered positions at other stores, though only “ based on seniority and availability.”

Bayview Lucky shoppers were disappointed in the news, though maybe not necessarily shocked.

"I notice when I go in there is very little staff," longtime Bayview worker Anthony Davenport told KPIX. “It is so minimal in there, that was always concerning to me. I wondered how long it would last and it seems like they were set up to just kind of try something."

Supervisor Walton told KPIX he would not take this laying down.

"We're going to fight to make sure this store remains," he said to the station. "Again, we've been in this position before, and if, for some reason, Lucky does decide to leave, we're gonna fight like hell to make sure that we bring another grocery store into the plaza."

Former Supervisor Dean Preston, a veteran of the Fillmore Safeway closure battle, was on KGO pushing back that large grocery stores in SF are now required to give a six-month notice to the community before closing a store. That seems like a Hail Mary that would just delay the inevitable, but it could buy some time. Meanwhile, City Hall officials could court a chain like Smart & Final or Grocery Outlet Bargain Market to come into the soon-to-be-vacant space, as both chains have shown interest in doing so at other closed SF grocery store spaces in the past.

Antioch 15-year-old Tyrell Washington was visiting SF’s Bayview District on July 4 to be with friends and family. He was among five people shot at a block party there, and he’s the only one who did not survive.

Tyrell Devon Amir Washington would have turned 16 years old on Friday, and would have started 11th grade next month. But instead, his friends and loved ones will mourn his death. The 15-year-old Antioch resident was among five people who were shot on the evening of July 4 at a Bayview District block party in San Francisco, and KTVU reports that Washington died at the scene of the shooting.

Washington was apparently in the Bayview to visit his grandmother, who lives there, with a planned evening trip to watch fireworks at a block party on Harbor Road. He attended that evening block party, though gunfire broke out as part of a dispute that Washington apparently had nothing to do with.

"He was at the wrong place at the wrong time and got hit in the crossfire along with other people," his cousin Lakisha Pettus told KTVU. “My cousin didn't deserve that. He was a good kid. To know him was to love him.”

SFPD confirms that five people were shot in the incident, two minors and two adults in addition to Washington. But the 15-year-old Washington is the only victim who did not survive, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family has established a GoFundMe for Tyrell Washington’s funeral costs. “He had just received his driver’s permit and a brand new car — something he was so excited about,” the GoFundMe campaign says. “Tyrell had already earned all of his high school credits and didn’t need to attend summer school. He was focused, motivated, and full of potential.”

This was San Francisco's 12th homicide of the year to date.

In less than five months' time, six people have been killed walking on San Francisco streets, the latest a 47-year-old man in the Bayview district.

The man was killed in a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue early Monday morning, around 6:04 am. As the Chronicle reports, the man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, and no further information has been made available.

The victim's name has not yet been made public.

Pedestrian advocacy organization Walk SF noted in a release that this was the sixth pedestrian death of the year to date in the city. And a man was killed in a hit-and-run at this same intersection five years ago, in July 2020.

"The intersection where the crash occurred is sandwiched between on-and-off ramps linking local streets to US Route 101," Walk SF says. "It is also where Bayshore Boulevard transitions into Potero Avenue, creating a complex network of freeway ramps and bridges."

The organization also notes that Bayshore Boulevard is on the city’s 2022 "high-injury network" map.

"People who live, work, and walk near highways face even greater safety risks when getting around," says Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk San Francisco. "Too often, drivers act like they’re on the freeway when in reality they are on neighborhood streets. Every possible safety improvement is needed in these areas to protect pedestrians."

This area of Bayshore Boulevard is in the process of getting some safety improvements designed, Walk SF notes, as part of the SFMTA's Cesar Chavez/Potrero Ave/Bayshore Blvd Intersection Improvements project.

A total of 24 pedestrians were killed on San Francisco streets in 2024, the highest number in any year since 2007 — marking a setback in the city's Vision Zero goal, which has not been renewed since 2021.

Says Medeiros, "City leaders may want to ignore something that some view as a failure. But a lack of progress on Vision Zero is a collective leadership failure, not a failure of Vision Zero."

This 47-year-old man is the first pedestrian victim so far this year who was not a senior citizen — with all five of the recorded pedestrian deaths in SF in 2025 being people over the age of 70.

Last week we noted two recent pedestrian deaths, the victims both being elderly women. 86-year-old Mary Naito was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing the street at Fillmore and McAllister streets on April 25, and 75-year-old San Francisco resident Annabella Gabriel Barquera was killed along with her dog while crossing the street in broad daylight at Howard and Seventh streets on May 1.

No arrests have been made in Monday's crash. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.

A Sunday afternoon shooting near India Basin Waterfront Park left four people hospitalized, though it’s still not clear what the motive was, and the shooter or shooters are still at large.

SFPD and paramedics responded to reports of a shooting in the Bayview late Sunday afternoon at about 4:50 pm between Middle Point Road and Ironwood Way, as KRON4 reports. Upon arrival, they found one victim with gunshot wounds, and transported that individual to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

But according to KTVU, three other people were also injured there in what is believed to be the same incident, bringing the total number of victims to four. The three other victims managed to transport themselves to hospitals, and their conditions are unknown.

There are currently no suspects identified, nor a description, and the motive for the shootings remains unclear.

It’s also not certain whether all four victims were shot. According to KRON4, “SFPD was not able to confirm if the three others injured were due to gunshot wounds.”

Once dubbed "by far the most expensive homeless response intervention” in SF history, the Bayview RV Triage Center is being shut down today, after a three-year run of pricey logistical snafus and frankly very little usage.

It was a little over three years ago, during the very dark January 2022 days of the pandemic, that San Francisco opened the Bayview RV Triage Center in hopes of providing safe accommodations for the homeless population. It was not a success right out of the gate, nor really at any point after leaving the gate. RV dwellers initially refused to move there, for its lack of electricity and a ban on propane tanks. And a 2023 Chronicle exposé dubbed the facility SF’s “‘most expensive homeless response’ ever” for its $15 million price tag on a place that only hosted about 30 vehicles at a time.

So we learned in December that the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (DHS) that operates the facility was planning to pull the plug on the Bayview Vehicle Triage Center sometime by March 2025. And something is actually happening on time with this project, as NBC Bay Area reports that the RV center is demanding everyone be out by the end of today.

"I think that that's what government is supposed to do," DHS deputy director Emily Cohen told KPIX. "If something's not working, you're supposed to end it and move on. Like, we don't want to just keep doing something that is demonstrating that it's not working."

Per NBC Bay Area, everyone staying at the site has been offered housing, alternative shelter, relocation assistance, or some form of rental subsidies. A few stragglers will be allowed to stay a bit longer if their housing deals are still being finalized. But obviously, many of these people may not have the means to get their vehicles out of there, so there may be quite a mess left behind.

"I'm going to have to find a place for the vehicle in the interim," resident Aaron Wilson told KPIX. "I have to get it registered and then I can have it for sale, right? And in that time I have to hope it doesn't get broken into. That's why they call this safe parking, break-ins to RVs is very common in San Francisco, it's almost assured. If you leave and they've been watching it you open yourself up."

Still, the costs for this facility were staggering. A 2024 Chronicle analysis found the city was spending $275 a night per RV there. Meanwhile, the cost of a one-night stay at the Candlestick RV Park right next door costs only $145 per night.

Hundreds of striking Amazon workers are picketing at the Amazon warehouse in SF’s Bayview District, joining thousands of other Amazon workers nationwide who went on strike Thursday morning looking for better wages and health care.

Less than a week before Christmas, KTVU reports that Amazon fulfillment center workers have gone on strike at seven large Amazon warehouses nationwide. And that includes the Toland Street warehouse in San Francisco’s Bayview District, where workers voted to unionize a couple months back. The workers say that the trillion-dollar company ignored their December 15 deadline to negotiate better wages and health care, and they’ve gone on strike across the country.

Let’s take a look at how things are going at the Amazon strike in New York.  

SFist cannot confirm that police were “roughing up and arresting workers” at this strike site some 3,000 miles away, but the tweet below is evidence that some striking Amazon workers were arrested. And mind you, the police officers doing the arresting are themselves members of unions, unions that regularly get these officers very generous wage and benefit packages.

KTVU has some footage of the strike here in SF, apparently taken around 6:30 am Thursday morning.

“We’ve made several requests for Amazon to start bargaining a union contract with our union, and they have simply ignored, ignored, ignored,” striking worker Dori Goldberg told KTVU. “We know that we make this company’s profits.”

“We work hard, and Amazon is paying us poverty wages,” he continued. “We live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, and Amazon is paying us just over 20 bucks an hour.”

And above we have the not-great optics of Amazon founder and executive chair Jeff Bezos dining at Mar-a-Lago with Donald Trump just last night, with Bezos of course carrying his current trophy fiancé in tow.

One of the big conflicts leading up to this strike is that Amazon does not recognize the Amazon Teamsters union. The Teamsters say they represent 10,000 people at ten US facilities, but an Amazon spokesperson claims this simply is not true, and that the Teamsters "have continued to intentionally mislead the public" by claiming they have 10,000 members.

"They don't," Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards said in a statement picked up by KTVU. "And this is another attempt to push a false narrative. The truth is that the Teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated, and attempted to coerce Amazon employees and third-party drivers to join them, which is illegal and is the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges against the union."

Notice her reference to “third-party drivers.” That means they’re contractors, working in Amazon uniforms and driving Amazon trucks, but they actually work for someone else. Use of contractors is a classic 21st Century method of excluding large parts of a company’s workforce from the salary and benefit structures that their actual employees enjoy. So this strike may be precedent-setting in terms of whether a company would accept demands from workers who they need, but technically do not employ.

NBC Bay Area describes the SF strike as involving “hundreds” of workers, and the Teamsters are touting this as the largest strike against Amazon ever in the US. Will this strike actually affect deliveries? And what percentage of workers are still crossing those picket lines anyway, particularly if they are contractors, and can’t afford to lose pay right before the holidays?

“If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed,” Teamsters president Sean O’Brien said in a statement in the Chronicle. But if packages are delayed — and that’s still an if — we’ll see how public sentiment shakes out in what is an unusual and somewhat unprecedented kind of strike.

The Bayview RV triage site that’s been dubbed the “most expensive homeless response” in SF history has been deemed a failure and will wind down operations in a few months, after blowing through $15 million and only accommodating about one-fifth of the people it was supposed to.

During the really bad days of the pandemic, San Francisco was scrambling to find safe accommodations for its homeless population, and was provided a fair amount of state funding to do this. One of these solutions was an RV triage center at Candlestick Point that opened in 2022, but it was little-used and incredibly costly.

So now, nearly three years later, the Chronicle reports that the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (DHS) is pulling the plug on the Bayview Vehicle Triage Center, and everyone will have to get their vehicles out of there by some point in March.

This is ironic, because the site just got its PG&E power hook-ups five weeks ago, after not having full power for nearly three years. On top of that, DHS is decommissioning the site a full nine months before the city’s lease on the place is up, after it was underutilized and suffered a series of logistical snafus.  

“We’re really not in the business of running RV parks, and that was very clear to us in this process,” DHS executive director Shireen McSpadden told the Chronicle.

The site was originally supposed to accommodate more than 150 RVs, but fire marshall limited it to just 35. It only ended up serving about 30 vehicles at a time, with an unknown number of residents in those vehicles.

And the program blew through $15.5 million of city and state funding over this nearly three years. The Chronicle reported on a city budget report in 2023 which noted that “assuming an ongoing capacity of 35 vehicles per night, the cost per vehicle is approximately $140,000 per year, which is by far the most expensive homeless response intervention.”

Indeed, the city was spending $275 a night per RV there, whereas one night at the adjacent Candlestick RV Park costs only $145 per night.

When the program expires, the DHS hopes to transition people into permanent housing “or provide them with other support such as vehicle repairs,” according to the Chronicle. But the RV-dwelling crowd tends to resist housing support, because they do not consider themselves homeless, and are fine with their status quo. The city is also considering temporary vouchers for existing RV parks in the area, or safe parking spots at other shelter sites that are yet to open.

This is an issue, because people living in vehicles are the fastest-growing segment of the SF homeless population. The latest homeless point-in-time count showed nearly 1,500 people living in vehicles in SF, a 37% increase over the previous count.

The sad thing is that the closure of this Bayview Triage Center will put even more vehicle-dwellers out on the streets. The upside, in this case, is that there are so few people using this facility that it will not appreciably increase that population of vehicle-dwellers on the streets.

There were two separate homicides in San Francisco on the day after Thanksgiving, including a fatal stabbing in the heart of the Mission District.

The stabbing occurred around 6:25 am Friday in the area of Mission and Sycamore streets, according to an SFPD release. The victim was found suffering from a single stab wound, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

There was no report of what may have led up to the stabbing, or whether there were any witnesses.

No arrests have been made and there have been no updates in the case since Friday.

Subsequently, at around 9:41 pm Friday, there was a fatal shooting in the Bayview District. According to another SFPD release, the shooting occurred on the unit block of Gould Street.

An adult male victim was found at the scene suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were performed, but he was declared deceased at the scene.

The SFPD Homicide Detail is now leading the investigation, and no arrests have yet been made.

These mark the 32nd and 33rd homicides of the year to date in San Francisco. At this time last year, there had been 47 homicides in the city, and we remain on track for a another historic-low year for homicides in SF.

A male victim was found shot and critically wounded Monday night in San Francisco's Bret Harte neighborhood.

The shooting happened on the 1200 block of Gilman Avenue, as KRON4 repots, and few details have been released so far. The block is a residential block, not far from Bayview/Hunters Point, on the opposite side of the Third Street corridor from Silver Terrace.

SFPD officers were called to the scene at 8:46 pm Mondau, following a report of gunfire in the area.

Officers then found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, which were considered to be life-threatening. Officers performed life-saving measures, and the man was taken to a hospital.

Police have not publicly identified any suspects, and no motive is yet known.

No arrests have been made.

A pregnant woman was shot twice in the stomach Tuesday at a residence in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood, and both she and her baby are expected to survive.

The shooting was first reported at 2:13 pm Tuesday on the 1100 block of Hollister Avenue. As KTVU reports, SFPD officers arrived to find the injured woman, who was taken to the hospital, and the shooting suspect was not present at the home and remains at large.

As KPIX reports, the woman remained conscious and able to walk after the shooting.

A neighbor, AJ Alvarez, tells KTVU, "It happened to be four houses down from where we live. So, that's really devastating to hear about that violent act happening so close to home."

According to the SF Standard, the victim is 28 weeks pregnant, and is in stable condition. A source told the publication that the bullets will be removed after the baby is delivered — and apparently the unborn child was unharmed.

There is no further information about the relationship between the victim and the shooting suspect.
