According to CBS 5 (interrupting us right in the middle of The People's Court, no less!) "East Contra Costa County residents are being evacuated from an area near the unincorporated town of Knightsen because of a possible explosive device found inside of a residential motor home."

Motor homes and explosive devices? Who could've imagined!? Anyway, that's all the info posted so far. We'll update as soon as more info becomes available.

Update: Taken (again!) from CBS 5: "Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said the device was found about 1:30 p.m. on Broadway by a man who said the device looked like dynamite.The bomb squad from the Walnut Creek Police Department responded and residents within a 1-mile radius of Broadway were ordered to evacuate."

Emergency telephone alert calls were made to "220 residents" living in the area, and the evacuees were sent to Delta Vista Middle School.

Seeing as how we don't drive an automobile in San Francisco because people in the Bay Area drive like crap because we want to keep the planet minty green, we don't feel the pinch as much as others do. About what, you ask? Well, gas prices, it seems, are going through the roof! (The only thing that concerns us about gasoline is its odor, which we love.)

But before you get all "like, ride a bus, why don't you?", many folk who work in San Francisco have to use a car to get to our precious little mecca. (You know, those who have to listen to you bitch about how they drive the 38-Geary; the people you speak Spanish to at the grocery stores on 24th Street, even though Rosa was born and raised here in the Bay Area; the people SF transplants tend to fetishize; etc.) As ideal (and homogeneous) as it would be for all of us to be waiting in line together at Rainbow Grocery, using our recyclable bag to carry home our raw food, it's just not gong to happen.

That said, it seems that the price of gas is going up astronomically. So much so that it's gone over the $4-mark here in SF. Something, we hear, about crude oil and $100 a barrels -- the segments we zone out on while watching The Daily Show. Anyway, aren't we just around the corner from driving around in spacecars that run on dandruff, or whatever? Anyone feeling the pinch?

Also, there's no free transit during winter/fall Spare the Air days. Bummer.

Thanks to a 5.6 earthquake and tonight's "Will there be a Halloween in the Castro or not?" question plaguing the minds of locals and bridge and tunnelers alike, San Francisco is back on top!

Even KRON, whose top story was still the wildfires as of yesterday, finally conceded and put Bay Area news back at the top of the page last night (even if they did mix up their news links; not that we could ever be accused of such absentmindedness on our end). SFGate, KTVU, and CBS5 were a little quicker to shift focus from the wildfires back to the Bay Area.

Let's hope the local focus stays local. And for those of you who live at the base of Sutro Tower, were you, like, totally freaked out last night after the quake? Do tell. Mariconsoy would probably like to know.

Last night in the city of Richmond, a 22-year-old man was shot over 12 times. And? He is expected to live.

According to the Chronicle (via the formidable service that is Bay City News), responding police officers found the victim "had been shot more than a dozen times in the upper torso and extremities with a large-caliber firearm." Initially listed in critical condition, he has since come out of surgery and is expected to survive.

"A nurse with 40 years of experience in emergency care said it was the most amazing thing she'd seen," said Richmond Police Lieutenant Mark Gagan. Wow, it's all so very 50 Cent. Anyway, we wish you a speedy recovery, man of steel.
