Honoring the 100-year anniversary of the Angel Island Immigration Station, the California State Parks, Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services threw a party in San Francisco this morning, complete with "a slideshow of historic photos, comments by dignitaries, recognition to detainees who once lived there and the swearing in of 100 new immigrants who took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States and became U.S. citizens."

In addition to celebrating this historic date -- the "West Coast’s gateway to America," saw immigrants from 80 countries processed through its doors, and reopened last year after a five-year, $15 million restoration -- President Barack Obama officially declared January 21 "Nation Angel Island Day."

Obama's proclaimation is as follows: NATIONAL ANGEL ISLAND DAY, 2010 - - - - - - - BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION

One hundred years ago, the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay opened for the first time, and an important chapter of the American narrative began. It would be written by those who walked through the station's doors over the next three decades. From the cities, villages, and farms of their birth, they journeyed across the Pacific, seeking better lives for themselves and their children. Many arrived at Angel Island, weary but hopeful, only to be unjustly confined for months or, in some cases, years. As we remember their struggle, we honor all who have been drawn to America by dreams of limitless opportunity.

They sure are crafty, those CodePink dames. First they manage to get within a few inches of Condoleezza Rice. Now they waltz up to Barack Obama and give him some paper. See, while at last night's Democratic Party fundraiser (which raised $2 million), Code Pink co-founder Jodie Evans, according to KTVU, handed Obama a petition "allegedly signed by Afghani women who want an end to the war in their country." After handing Obama the petition, Evans said the President told her "‘You know we are not going to end the problem in Afghanistan any time soon.’" To which she replied, "actually you’re not going to solve the problem, they are.” Added bonus: no fake blood.was involved.

Protest-fetish protest group CodePink -- a social circle whose members wear pink feather boas and zany hats while shouting -- will be in Union Square tonight, protesting President Barack Obama's visit. According to Appeal.BCN. CodePink"will ask the president to commit to an exit strategy from Afghanistan." Also, they will display a banner in Union Square, "while a Code Pink member will try to deliver petitions to the president inside the fundraiser." Outrageous.

Other protest groups wringing their hands in Union Square this evening while Obama eats fancy food at the St. Francis Hotel: Single Payer Now, who "plans to have doctors, nurses and health care reform activists across the street from the hotel demanding national single-payer health care," and a group called the Stop NAFTA/CAFTA Coalition, who will ask the president "to end the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Central American Free Trade Agreement, which the group says have increased poverty and inequality."

Forget the Nobel Prize. Screw having your own pencil sharpener in the Oval Office. Real power comes from your mere presence being able to alter Muni's schedule. And that's just what President Barack Obama has done. When he visits San Francisco tomorrow, Muni reroutes will go into effect.

Brace yourselves: the 26 Valencia (at Mission and Mary), the 27 Bryant (5th & Folsom, 5th & Howard, 5th & Mission), and 38 Geary, and 38L Geary Limited (Geary & Kearny, Geary & Stockton, Geary & Powell) will all get loopy from around 2 p.m. Thursday to 2 a..m Friday.

After eight long years of being ignored like a problem only-child in a first marriage gone afoul, it feels almost unnatural for the President of the United States to pay San Francisco a visit. What in heaven's name does Obama want? Did we do something bad? Where can we hide our bong?

But it's true, POTUS and Nobel Prize recipient Barack Obama will visit us this week. According to Carla Marinucci, he's here to show face at some grand fundraising event at the St. Francis Hotel later in the night, possible to cull in heaps of cash for Democrats. (The fun starts at $500 a plate!)

Sadly, he won't have much time to walk on Lombard or hit up any bars in the Mission; Obama leaves the very next day.

Without giving any specifics,,President Barack Obama pledged to end the U.S. military's dated and bizarre ban on openly queer homosexuals serving in the military. During a speech at the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner on Saturday, Obama said, "I will end 'don't ask-don't tell."

According to AP, Obama also told the presumably elated crowd:

"We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve the country," Obama said. "We should be celebrating their willingness to step forward and show such courage ... especially when we are fighting two wars.

"I appreciate that many of you don't believe progress has come fast enough," Obama said. "Do not doubt the direction we are heading and the destination we will reach."

The President also asked for on Congress to repeal the Defense Of Marriage Act This comes on the heels of Obama's surprise Nobel Peace Prize award.

No word yet, however, as to when he'll end the war.

In that *super controversial* address to school children that had conservatives nationwide saying he would turn our kids into an army of health-care-reform-endorsing zombies, President Barack Obama today advised kids to "be careful what you post on Facebook" because it could come back and haunt you someday. Sound advice. He also made the *super controversial* statement, "Every single one of you has something to offer," and said that of anyone dead or alive who he could have dinner with, he'd choose Ghandi. No word yet on the number of glazed-over, socialist automatons later seen wandering the nation's school yards.

Oh dear.

We received the following missive from an angry Texas resident (or troll) early this morning. While she doesn't directly point to it, we assume it is in response to this. She writes to us, saying:

I would like to know why you feel you need to attack citizens who are concerned about the Facist [sic] Obama's plan to finish the destruction of the United States of America? Why is it you hate this country so much? It has provided you with the drugs you love, the far left liberals you admire so much, good food, housing, the right to spout your far left liberal sh*t, and to spread your hate. For years while Bush was still in office he was called evey filty [sic] name, and submitted to every virile action of the far left, while you have supported on of the most corrupted politicians in Washington in Pelosi.

Our country is in ruin because of both parties, and you, as one who should be investigating and reporting the facts as you have investigated them, do nothing but add to the hate. You should be trying to build this country-not destroy it.

A country where organized idiots march in favor of a rapist who has murdered three policeman [sic] and the gay community feels it must defile the very religious institutions that are the foundation of this country is not the country I grew up in and I ache for it when I turn on the news.

Several years ago I brought my family to San Francisco. I actually saw someone defecating in a city park there, and knew then I would never go back. Shame on you people.

Sheesh. Replace "Facist Obama" with "Fascist Bush," "Pelosi" with "Cheney," and "I actually saw someone defecating in a city park there" to "I actually saw a teenage boy raping his two-year-old sister in a trailer park there," and then, well, we'd have an angry San Franciscan. Different but the same.
