There was a baby boy born in San Leandro just a few minutes after midnight last night, making him likely to have been the Bay Area's first birth of 2026.

A baby boy whose name is not being made public was born at 12:03 am on January 1, 2026, at Kaiser Permanente San Leandro Medical Center.

A baby girl was born just a few minutes later at the same hospital, at 12:07 am, and this appears to have been a very busy night for the obstetricians at Kaiser San Leandro indeed!

Said one new mother on Facebook, commenting on the news story about the first two babies, "So funny we were all in competition with each other [laughing through tears emoji] our little girl ended up coming at 11:58 pm on the 31st with the other two babies being within 10 minutes after. It was a busy night at Kaiser San Leandro!"

The boy and girl were the only two births at a Bay Area hospital in the first hour of the new year, as Bay City News reports, and NBC Bay Area has photos of both.

Other cities around the country are celebrating their first babies of 2026, including a little girl born in New York City right at the stroke of midnight.

Have you ever watched a sea otter pup emerge into the world? I sure haven't. But that's exactly what folks at Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Great Tide Pool got to witness Saturday — and now you can join them, with the miracle of online video.

Seeking shelter from Saturday's stormy seas, the mom appeared in the tide pool Saturday afternoon. And then, mama got started (if the miracle of life makes you squeamish, this video is not for you) in front of an excited crowd of Aquarium staffers and visitors:

"We’re amazed and awed to have had a chance to witness this Monterey Bay conservation success story first hand in our own backyard, " the Aquarium said on Facebook, noting that "Our sea otter researchers have been watching wild otters for years and have never seen a birth close up like this."

As with the (non-public) sea otter birth in their tide pool last December, as soon as she popped her pup, mom started busily grooming the little critter to puff up the baby's fur so he will float.

"She wants to make sure it's got lots of air in that fur, the baby is going to have to float on its own in the ocean, and she wants to make sure that's happening," Aquarium trainer Dan Albro says.

As of Sunday, the duo were still floating around at the tide pool, just hanging out and being cute.

The parents of a four-month-old baby had a terrible ten minutes this morning, after their car was stolen from a San Francisco street while the infant was in the back seat.

According to CBS5, San Francisco Police Department officers were flagged down on Golden Gate Avenue at 10:41 this morning, on reports that a Toyota Scion had been stolen from the area with the baby inside.

According to SFPD spokesperson Officer Albie Esparza, the vehicle was taken from the 100 block of Golden Gate, which is between Jones and Market Streets.

KTVU reports that "The mother of the baby had left the child and her keys in the car."

"She saw a suspect steal the car, along with the baby in the back."

Officer Grace Gatpandan told Bay City News that the baby's parent "pulled over because someone had kicked the car while they were stopped at a traffic light, but Gatpandan said it was unclear whether that person had any connection to the car theft."

It was when the adult got out to see if there was any damage to the car that the suspect, identified by SFPD as 34-year-old SF man Solomon Alemu (photo above), allegedly got in and drove away with the child in the back seat.

Ten minutes later, police spotted the suspect vehicle a few blocks away on 7th Street, as the Alemu parked "in front of the public defender's office and get out of the car."

That's when police swooped in, recovered the baby, and arrested Alemu, who police say has no known link to the baby's family. "

He was booked into San Francisco County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, kidnapping, child endangerment, and probation violation.

CBS5 reports that the infant was unharmed in the incident, and has been returned to their family.

We're all used to surprises while traveling by air. Delays, too-close-for-comfort-pat-downs, weird terrible smells...but even the most jaded traveler must have been surprised when a woman gave birth aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that took off from San Francisco International Airport Tuesday morning.

KCBS reports that Southwest Flight 623 took off from SFO at 6:24 a.m., headed for Sky Harbor International in Phoenix. But that plan was shattered when shortly after takeoff, a passenger went into labor, Southwest Airlines spokesperson Emily Samuels confirms.

The 111 passengers of the flight were diverted to LAX, KTLA reports, but they couldn't land fast enough: by the time the plane touched down in LA, at 7:38, the baby (gender as yet unstated) was born.

“Luckily a nurse and doctor were on board,” Samuels says. They assisted in the birth, then Los Angeles Fire Department officials took over, caring for the mother and newborn before any passengers exited the plane, LAFD spokesman Erik Scott told KTLA.

The flight's passengers were delayed for about two-and-a-half hours, Samuels said, but “they’ll certainly have a story to tell."

And by all accounts, mother and child are doing well. Both were transported to an LA hospital and are in good condition, and Samuels says that "I can’t comment on their condition because I’m not a medical professional, but it was a pretty exciting day."

Former Googler and current Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had a baby boy over the weekend (a Libra!), making the wee one her and husband Zach Bogue's first child. Though they have yet to reveal the newborn's name—we think Voltron Force is the only suitable name for a boy—we can tell you that he shares a birthday with such luminaries as Julie Andrews, Randy Quaid, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and Zach Galifianakis.

The 37-year-old CEO plans to take just "a few weeks" off for maternity leave, according to an interview she gave Fortune magazine in July. And, according to Mercury News, "The Yahoo spokesperson who talked to MarketWatch confirmed that Mayer would be 'working remotely and is planning to return to the office as soon as possible, likely in one to two weeks.' "

Mayer shocked the tech world in July when she announced she was leaving Google, a company she helped build,to head Yahoo. After a slew of questionable leadership choices over the last few years, Mayer, the fifth CEO in less than a year, has been anointed as the struggling tech company's most likely savior. During Mayer's first day at Yahoo, if you recall, employes showered the then-pregnant mom with a company-themed layette.

A wee one found wandering by himself in a Walmart parking lot early this morning has since been reunited with his family. "[T]he boy, between 2 and 3 years old, was found barefoot wearing a diaper and a white T-shirt. His family contacted police overnight," reports the CoCo Times. "Police said the tot was able to reach a door handle at his home -- located across the street from the lot -- and let himself outside." Aw, poor little fella. Could've really hurt himself. Also, who doesn't lock their doors these days? Especially at night. Sheesh.

Update: Pardon our snap judgement! It turns out that the door was locked. KTVU reports: "The mother and son had recently moved into the apartment, it’s an ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) compliant apartment so the door handle is in a position relatively low on the door and the deadbolt was released just by depressing the handle...[t]he child was able to do that and get out.”

The itty-bitty bundle of joy known as Montana Tessa Siebel Newsom made her first public appearance over the weekend. The 100th anniversary of the Geary Theater, which houses the American Conservatory Theater, brought out Gavin Newsom, Jennifer Siebel and their DNA mash-up, Montana, who looks nothing short of adorable.

According to City Insider, Monty was sporting a pink coat and pants and sucking on pacifier.

San Jose won bragging rights last night for having the first baby born in the Bay Area in 2010. While Rosa Lee, born at California Pacific Medical Center's California campus in SF, entered the world at 12:01, an unidentified boy was delivered at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose just 20 seconds after midnight. So, yeah, you win San Jose. Anyway, in related news, Terri Rucker and Jim Wright's screaming blessing joined the world at exactly 1:01 a.m. on 01/01/10.

A four-month-old baby boy, Everett Carey, who was found unresponsive after being left alone for hours in his father's vehicle at the El Cerrito Plaza BART station for hours, died at the Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo. While reports on exactly what happened are sketchy, it seems Everett's father, who normally dropped Everett off at a babysitter in the morning before driving to the station, forgot. Or something. And left him inside the car. Later than afternoon, the mother went to the station to look for the baby, finding his limp body in the car. According to reports, "an autopsy is scheduled for today by the Contra Costa County coroner, and findings such as the cause of death and the results of toxicology tests will be taken into account."

Eliana Lopez and Ross Mirkarimi are the parents of a baby boy today -- the SF Supervisor's first bundle of fun. A reader (presumably Mirkarimi himself) tips us off, saying, "Eliana Lopez and Ross Mirkarimi are the proud parents of a baby boy. The baby weighed in at 8lbs, 14oz. Our son was born at home, natural childbirth. Eliana was in labor all night/day. She is a goddess! She and baby are resting, while Pappa tries to clean and cook."

Yes, she IS a goddess. She delivered a 9-pound boy via natural childbirth at home. Ow. So: we expect you to buy her a FANTASTIC push present, Ross. We're not kidding. Here you go.

While it might be too early to chat about this most holy offspring -- Jennifer is reportedly upset that the news leaked, which could mean she's not yet at the three-month mark yet, a window ripe for pregnancy complications -- it's big news this morning. People fucking love babies and pregnant celebrities.

- Sajid Farooq at KNTV says that "the mayor told a local television anchor that his wife is due in September" and that "Valleywag was the first to report the news saying that the mayor's friends had leaked the information."

- Erin Allday at SFGate says baby Gav could "reverse Newsom's long-standing playboy image." It's true. Practically everyone we know who has had a kid, threw away their bongs and mirrors the moment they brought the kid home.

- David Latterman (political analyst) tells The Examiner: "Babies make good politicians ... they have for 200 years."

- The Mommy Files wants to know if this means that "S.F. become baby friendly?"

A Daly City couple has even more to cheer about after giving birth to a healthy baby boy with 12 fingers and 12 toes. According to KTVU, baby "Kamani Hubbard has six-fully formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet. It's called “polydactyly” -- extra digits -- not an uncommon genetic trait, but Bay Area doctors say they've never seen a case so remarkable." the little tyke was born at Saint Luke's Hospital three weeks ago. It turns out the genetic trait runs in the family. Kris Hubbard, the boy's father, says that he had "nubs of sixth fingers removed as a child" and that other family members were extra blessed with superfluous digits.
