Film du Jour: "Pansy" on October 28, 2008

The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco produced the above Yes on Prop. R ad, which pays homage to Lyndon B Johnson's infamous "Daisy" ad from the 1964 Presidential campaign.... [continue]

The entertaining/controversial Chris Daly, who seems a bit quiet as of late, has a new target now: wafts of cigarette smoke. We're told that his latest push of legislation "calls for a smoking ban outside of restaurants, in waiting areas, within 20 feet of nonresidential buildings," and in common areas of apartment buildings. That is to say, you might have to look elsewhere to spark up that Capri or Virgina Slim while eating out.... [continue]

Dear SF Cabs: We hate you. But, like, we hate-hate you. We hate you to death. For reals. Why? Because in addition to never having change for a $20, charging too much for a ride from Van Ness and Market to Third and Market, childishly going on strike whenever the city dares to bring in more, much-needed cabs, and for this, you now want to "charge a $1 per passenger fee to offset rising... Hey, are you doing anything tomorrow night? If you're like us and you love the Heart of the City Farmers' Market (Wednesdays and Sundays on UN Plaza), you might want to consider going to City Hall, sidestepping the throngs of happy marrying couples, and going to room 250 at 5:00. See, Mayor Gavin has introduced legislation that would turn the operation of the market over to the city's Real Estate division, taking it away... [continue]

KTVU has some choice footage of last Saturday's Muni crash over on King Street near AT&T Park. Since major news networks inexplicably don't believe in the religion of Embedded Code, we are forced to link to it here. (Oh, and then you have to click on "RAW VIDEO: Watch Muni Surveillance Footage Shot On Trains Involved In Collision.") If some kind soul wants to upload or find us the same footage, YouTube- or Flickr... [continue]

Our dear friends over at the Daily Clog tell us that tomorrow's Spare the Air Day, -- where you can ride public transit for free until noon tomorrow, June 19 -- will be the last one, ever. What? This is terrible news. Anyway, the Air District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are sponsoring tomorrow's ride-from-hell (beware of the rookie rider!) where transit will be free all day on Bay Area bus and light-rail systems,... Photo by dspain/Flickr Some pig-- you heard us, pig! -- had the unmitigated gall to go against the express wishes of Google. The nerve! Driving a Prius (oh, of course it was a Prius), some poor Google Street View recording sap was busted by the fuzz for doing some illegal, doing something evil over in the Presidio. Wonder what it was? Wait until the Google mafia hears about this. We're heading over to the... [continue]

Speaking of our fine mayor, Newsom's recently released budget plan, it seems, will "terminate critical health and human services, while pumping up salaries for police by 25% and adding many new high paid patronage positions into his own administration," at least according to the folks over at something called the People's Budget Collaborative, brought to you by the loopy kids at the Coalition on Homelessness. They claim the following cuts will happen. Ahem: 1)... [continue]

Here they are: images fro this past weekend's Bay To Breakers--the race the SFPD doesn't want you to know about! Also, there are a few NSFW images in here, so... you've been warned. Steve Rhodes... [continue]

SFist intercepted this email sent out today by SFPD Park Station Captain Teri Barrett. Teri, it seems, has an estranged relationship with the merriment for which San Francisco is/used to be famous. Leisure World we are not.
