January always marks one of two annual menu changeovers at Mission cocktail mecca Trick Dog, and this time around the theme is Trick Dog University, based around a college course catalogue.

Drinks have names like college courses, e.g. Computer Science (Tanqueray 10, Aperol, Clement Mahina coconut, apple and lavender soda, lime), Comparative Literature (Old Forester bonded bourbon, mango, Okinawan sugar, hops), and the Political Science (Unión mezcal, Cointreau, Hidalgo oloroso sherry, carrot and beet kanji, habañero, lime).

This week local foodinista Dapper Diner dropped in to try some of the place's wares and brings our attention to the Linguistics cocktail, which is a stirred drink made with nougat-infused Bombay gin, Vermouth Routin Blanc, Bordiga Amaro Dilei, and garnished with a piece of a 3 Musketeers bar.

Another drink, called Romance Languages, features rye, sweet vermouth, kirsch, Drambuie, Banten Red tea, blood orange, lemon, and Ardbeg scotch, and it appears to be garnished with "cherry chocolate."

Trick Dog, as fans know, has won bunches of accolades in its seven years of life, including the Best Cocktail Menu prize at the Spirited Awards in 2018, and landing on the World's 50 Best Bars in 2016. And the bar has repeatedly been nominated for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Cocktail Program.
