Near the corner of Sacramento and Ward streets outside Longfellow Middle School on Tuesday night, a Berkeley resident found a woman shot to death while presumably riding her bike. "The citizen said the victim was bleeding from the head and may have fallen on her bike," reports SFGate. "But officers arrived and determined that the victim had been shot."

Though the area is not particularly known for being extraordinarily violent, Berkeleyside reports that neighbors feel that an unlawful marijuana has caused an uptick in unruly behavior in the area. To wit: "Neighbors and members of the Sacramento Street Improvement Association have attributed some of the violence to the presence of an unlicensed cannabis collective at 2480-B Sacramento Street. After a long fight over zoning and other regulations, Perfect Plants Patients Group shut its doors in mid-November, which some residents said they hoped would bring more peace to the neighborhood."

No word yet on the identity of the woman, reported to be in the 40s or 50s, and no arrests have been made. We'll update the story as it unfolds. This brings Berkeley's homicide number to 4 for 2012.
