Oh No, Ed Jew!: Around The Districts

Nothing too new to report on the Ed Jew got arrested front this morning, but the Chron did survey all the other Board of Supervisor members for their reactions. Let's go in order!

--District 1 (Jake McG): "The appearance is so bad, we don't need a trial."
--District 2 (Michela Alioto-Pier): Considers Jew a friend, "Let's remember he's not been found guilty of anything."
--District 3 (Aaron Peskin): "If I was in his place, I would [resign.] .... unless he has some remarkable story that he has not told yet to give people confidence." Peskin told the Examiner that Jew was in "a pickle."
--District 4 (Tapioca Ed): left work early yesterday (3:30 p.m.).
--District 5 (Ross the Conquistador): They had to cancel a meeting yesterday because everyone was so distracted about Ed.
--District 6 (C. Daly): Has apparently been calling for Jew to resign for weeks; busy issuing statements about the budget showdown.
--District 7 (Sean Elsbernd): no comment.
--District 8 (Bevan Dufty): "Only Ed and his conscience can tell him what to do at this point."
--District 9 (Tom Ammiano): "A resignation would be the best thing."
--District 10 (Sophie Maxwell): Innocent until proven guilty.
--District 11 (Gerardo Sandoval): "I'm in a state of shock."

After the jump, a collection of links and some tidbits about Ed Jew (including some of the ones folks are asking about in the comments). We totally did not realize Kamala Harris had hired Jew as an advisor in her DA campaign! Awkward!

Today's news coverage:

--The Examiner goes through the city's options for getting rid of Ed -- Newsom can ask Jew to resign for "official misconduct" at any time, and if Jew's convicted, he's required to step down under the City Charter. However, if Jew leaves office before July 10, we have to have a special election in November for whoever gets appointed to the seat. If Jew leaves after July 10, Newsom's appointee can serve out the rest of Jew's term. The rest of the Ex's coverage doesn't have too much new to add.

--Matier and Ross detail the DA's investigation, and note that both the Board of Supes and the Ethics Commission can force Jew out of office, if the matter's referred to them by Newsom.

And some older news:

--Fiona Ma called this Burlingame thing back in 2002, when Jew ran for the District 4 seat the first time.

--Hey, did you know that in 2003, when Kamala was running for the DA's office, she hired Jew to advise her on Chinatown outreach? Guess Jew's wishing he'd backed Fazio now, huh?

--Commenter Shibi asked if anyone remembered the homeless man beaten to death outside Jew's flower shop last year. Here's some articles.

--Someone on the Wall was reminiscing about how Ed Jew accused Doug Chan of not living in District 4 too during the race. Here's that link.

--Here's some other articles on Ed Jew from the Chron archives: here's Ed on a business district in Chinatown in 2005, money missing from the PTA association Jew volunteered with, a protest Jew organized against the PUC against raising sewer rates, Jew's activism against the SF Unified School District's desegregation plans,

I still find it amusing that Ed Jew surrendered in Burlingame at 7PM. Hmmm, having dinner in Burlingame or chowing on something at your home in the Sunset?

Would surrendering in Burlingame be an admission of guilt that he does not reside in the Sunset or just cause another spin around the news media?

You would think that if he knew he was to be arrested (since they were negotiating a plea deal that broke down, you think he would) Why wouldn;t he go for the PR value of being taken into custody at his Sunset House?

Hahaha, so this was really an open secret? How strange... I wonder why Ed Jew made it this far? Are there any other supervisors that don't live in their district? I've heard rumors about McGoldrick and Alioto-Pier.

Yes, Ed Jew's surrendering to police in Burlingame last night would certainly help him in digging his own political grave. Who does he think he is, Paris Hilton, Barry Bonds or George Bush? This sort of "rules don't apply to me" mentality is disgusting. Ed Jew should change his political affilication back to Republican and go work for the Bush crime family (when he finishes serving his time for the nine or so felonies).

Thank GOD for "IRV" or "RCV" or whatever the weird kids are calling it now. That way we could "avoid" the pain and cost of a "runoff" election, only now to have the pain and cost of another election to replace the guy who really only got 25% or so of the vote on election day.

yeah, yeah, I know people marked him as their "second choice." So freakin' what? That means they still didn't think he was up to the job as a first choice. And why should we be settling for scraps in the Sunset?

RCV/IRV Sucks.

i'll second the anti rcv/irv sentiment as well

isn't that the only reason we are prisoners of daly still in district 6?

The man is down and you still want to keep stomping him.

Maybe the Mayor should (at the urging of a Board resolution?) suspend Jew from office and refer this matter to the Ethics Commission (which would have to hold a hearing within 5 days) after which time the Board of Supervisors would get to vote on whether to remove Jew from office. (Charter 15.105) All Jew has to be found guilty of is “misconduct” (i.e. he doesn’t have to be convicted of doing anything unlawful), which includes “conduct that falls below the standard of decency, good faith and right action impliedly required of all public officers.”

Perhaps these undisputed facts qualify as misconduct: Supervisor Jew (1) told three different stories about the Burlingame address; (2) claims that he moved into the Sunset address in July but listed that address as his residence in February when filing election papers; (3) improperly gave himself loans in both of his campaigns for supervisor; (4) did, in fact, take a bag of money from business owners trying to get compliant with Proposition G; (5) despite being given an extension, has still failed to turn over basic documents like his 2006 tax forms to the City Attorney; and, (6) perhaps most importantly, as Sup. Peskin pointed out, has offered NO explanation for any of this mess.

Campers,

Harris has a conflict of interest that should have precluded her becoming involved in this case. During her '03 campaign, Ed was a paid consultant to her campaign (3k of so).

I doubt that the mayor will do anything until July 10th [I this that's the date?]. If T-Ed is removed B4 then, a special election will have to be held, and the Gav will not be able to appoint his own someone to fill the vacancy.

I hope the new person can prove s/he lives in the Sunset, or is at least smart enough to take a shower at home every now and then. They must also swear not to visit any tapioca shops until they leave office.

Why are people taking dumps on IRV/RCV? Yeah, you avoid a runoff, and you get your 2nd choice if your first choice didn't win. Isn't that the point? I mean, seriously guys, what's the difference? Yeah, let's ditch district elections too. I love how people are using this as a way to spin against district elections and RCV/IRV. Maybe you can all make it to Newsom's next fake question time and beat up the chicken suit people too!

IRV/RCV is a good thing. Runoffs usually have lower turnout. By giving people ranked choice voting, we empower voters.

How do you figure? If Harris had ignored this, then there would be folks calling for her head, especially with her up for re-election soon. She acted against someone who was at one time a consultant to her campaign. She is a lawyer and her top staff are all lawyers. You don't think this was discussed (to death) before they acted?

Moving against Tapioca Ed was the smart move for Harris. It makes her look like she isn't beholden to people who violate the law.

And Jerry, he is an idiot and he deserves everything he gets....
