10:30 p.m.: We went out to dinner and missed Ed Jew's surrender to the authorities.... in Burlingame!!! Awesome. Hey, that way he could just go straight home afterwards. Jew posted bail and was released on his own recognizance. His first court appearance is scheduled for July 16.
7:42 p.m.: KCBS has an audio clip (3:53) of their interview with Bill Fazio up. Jew found out a warrant was being issued at around 4 p.m. today, though Fazio's been talking with the DA's office for about a week now. Fazio's arguing that Jew lived on 28th Ave. before, moved out briefly, and then moved back, and says the DA doesn't have any evidence to support their claims. Jew will probably turn himself in tomorrow morning.
7:35 p.m.: Tom Ammiano has compared Ed Jew to Paris Hilton.
6:35 p.m.: Peskin's called for Jew to resign. You know, we understand that guy doesn't care if you have pets.
6:25 p.m.: More stuff! Fog City has copies of the correspondence between the City Attorney and Steve Gruel (.pdfs, just keep scrolling through the document), and reports that Bill Fazio (the guy who Kamala Harris beat for the DA's office) is representing Jew in the criminal proceedings and has Newsom's statement too (blah blah, very serious, blah blah, continue my careful investigation, blah blah, Chris Daly sucks. Okay, we made up that last part.)
A warrant's been issued for Ed Jew's arrest! More news as it happens; previous updates are after the jump.
6:20 p.m.: Okay, we're back. It seems to us like this is going to be a pretty tough case for the DA's office to prove -- under California law, it looks like they'll have to prove that Ed Jew knew he didn't live in San Francisco when he filed all his paperwork, to get a guilty verdict.
So Jew could theoretically avoid a conviction by saying that he genuinely thought he resided in District 4 just by owning (or, to clarify, by living in) the 28th Avenue house. Either that or there are some smoking guns in the utility bills the FBI seized.
5:30 p.m.: The Chron's got a small bit up, with promises of updates to come. Okay, we're heading out for a bit but will come back with more news!
5:18 p.m.: Fog City has the press release from Kamala Harris's office. They're charging him with lying under oath and falsifying documents about where he lived when he declared for office. Also, voter fraud, for registering to vote at the 28th Avenue address. Jew will be given the option of a self-surrender and arraignment is expected in the next few days.
5:15 p.m.: A source watching NBC 3 says the crime is said to be "residency-related." Is it a crime not to live in San Francisco now?
Around 5:00 p.m.: OMG, OMG, breaking news! ABC 7 is reporting that an arrest warrant's been issued for Tapioca Ed. Bail is set at $135,000 (that's 3.375 Quickly shakedowns).

Don't sweat it Ed. Just tell them you're claustrophobic and have ADD. They'll put you under home confinement. Which would be the most ironic thing to happen since I was looking for a knife and could only find 200 hundred spoons and I got offered a free ride when I'd already paid on my wedding day, which was rainy.
They're going to have trouble finding him if they can't figure out where he lives.
This is bad for the Jews.
Literally.
-
Tapioca Ed:
If you want the Quickly Tapioca in my neighborhood...you have to pay.
Quickly Owners:
Ed, we think it's wrong to extort money from the business owners.
Tapioca Ed:
Look...as the representative of the Sunset, l've got big responsibilities. These permits are very expensive. You're using my police, my sanitation people, my free Oldsmobiles.
If you mention extortion again...I'll have your legs broken.
Quickly Owners:
I'm sure we can arrange a nice honorarium from the business owners. (under breath) get the FBI on the phone fast!

With obvious apologies to Animal House
There are many, many department heads who have falsely registered to vote in San Francisco.
The charter requires that all officers of the City and County, department heads are defined as officers of the City and County, must be electors of San Francisco.
In general, the rules are pretty loose in allowing voters to register where they would, albeit only once. But if one registered to vote in San Francisco or failed to change one's registration once moving out of San Francisco with intent to evade the Charter requirements, you've pretty much done what Tapioca Ed is facing hard time for.
Ever wonder why none of them are ever indicted for felony voter fraud?
My understanding is that Yomi Agubiande is one of those department heads. Former Ethics Executive Director Ginny Vida was another.
Will we see equal protection under the law or do those laws only apply when it is in the interests of the ruling elites of San Francisco?
-marc
Come on Marc, a department head is very different to an elected official, especially one elected to represent a specific district of the city. Anyway, this is small change compared to the bribery charges that will be filed.
It's not a crime to be homeless!
The matter is of black letter law in the Charter. If you are a department head, then you are an officer of the city. If you are an officer of the city, then you must an elector. If you falsify documents to register to vote in SF in order to satisfy the charter requirements, then you are walking in Ed Jew's shews.
-marc
Run, Ed, run!
Last night I had two dreams. 1) I heard back about a job I applied for. 2) Ed Jew resigned. At 12:30 today, I got a call about the job. Now is a resignation in the air? (And if both dreams come true, will I replace Ed Jew? I live in Oakland, so I better start forging my proof of residency now.)
This is worse for the Jews than when Hitler had those old steam baths remodeled.
Say, you didn't by chance happen to dream that the Giants would win again tonight, did you?
(crosses fingers)
I'm actually in Burlingame for a few days, and oddly enough the family home is just down the street from Ed's. We drove by but didn't see any activity.
It's funny to see DA Harris prosecuting someone for violating an oath- wasn't there some controversy about her swearing to abide by spending limits in the '03 race, and then breaking them?
Or am I mistaken? Someone, please, let me know!
OK, someone on SFist seems to be either a) prescient, b) a mole from the DA's office, c) a Legal Genius, or d) just super-duper smart.
(See the comment from machiamelly on the 'Oh No, Ed Jew: Paperwork' post at 10:11am this morning.)
SFist, breaking news again, due to the Large Brains of its contributors. (Also, I hear that machiamelly is HOT.)
Doesn't anybody remember a certain semi-crazy Sunset supervisor who was up to no good and started to feel kind of persecuted by the liberals and the gays, and the next thing we knew Moscone and Milk had been shot? Jesus, people, stop egging Jew on! Or at least tell Newsom and Ammiano to start wearing bullet-proof vests, and Peskin to get ready to be mayor.
Hey, Ed! Cry "Rehab!" now! Maybe we can blame this on oxycontin or something.
DoogieHogwash, allow me to nitpick. Dan White was a Supervisor from the Excelsior district
No Doogie, no one will remember that because Dan White wasn't from the Sunset.
Oh like there's a difference. Like any of you ever go west of Guerrero or south of 24th st. anyway.
*Breaking News*
Ed Jew releases statement, "I will never surrender to the elitist racist machine in San Francisco that seeks to take down my hard earned position. I am holed up in the flower shop where I will remain until my Chinese brothers and sisters rally to win my freedom!"
lexpress.mu/images/84778_1.jpg
Wow, bail is $135,000. It might seem like a lota money BUT... I suggest that T-Ed borrow the $90,000 that congressman Jefferson of Louisiana has stored in his freezer, and then kick in the $40 G's he got from the FBI.
That leaves only $5000 more to come up with! Isn't that about how much profit a busy tapioca shop makes in a day? I'll check on tapioca.com to be sure.
C'mon, Doogie. Some of us surf and some of us would also visit a place like El Rio (3100 block of Mission).
"So Jew could theoretically avoid a conviction by saying that he genuinely thought he resided in District 4 just by owning the 28th Avenue house."
Since Ed Jew says he lives at the house owned by his Father (the 28th Ave home in question)-
Does that mean the DA really has nothing to prove then?
Speaking of Dan White, I remember that the DA bungled his prosecution and he all but walked for two murders.
So, cheer up, Ed, there may be a precedent and you needn't worry for your freedom.
Ed was a radical right wing Linbaugesq righty. Execute him.
And where does Ed surrender? Burlingame, of course.
Duh!
so ed jew just surrendered to authorities ... ... IN BURLINGAME???
i don't see how anyone's irony meter could survive this one.
He's an idiot.
He didn't even bother to make the drive to SF to turn himself in at, say, the Taraval Police Station.
okay -- as a resident of district 4 and a person who kinda likes Ed, I'm really disappointed he turned himself in in Burlingame. That proves to me he doesn't live in my neighborhood more than anything -- the Taraval Station is just up the street from his so called residence.
Is it just me or should Ed Jew be the star of Southwest's new ads for their relaunch in SFO. Just imagine, a picture of Ed Jew.. pan anything he does.... followed by the voice over and caption... need to get away?
Yes, I know Southwest doesn't fly to China but he definitely is their new poster child.
The Channel 2 news just said that he was arrested in Burlingame!! SFist was right!!
Unless of course KTVU is getting its news from SFist like the Chron just reported the same thing eerriee.
Sad too.
WTF?! He surrendered in Bvrlingame? (Ride Caltrain and you can get the joke).
What a dumb ass. No wonder Kamala beat Fazio - any criminal defense attorney worth her or his hourly rate would know to come up to SF to surrender, for Chrissake. Shit, half the SFist family spotted that one based upon Law & Order viewings?
And here's a hint for Ed -- you would be *lucky* to be charged with and/or pleading to accepting a bribe. I think the more accurate description would be this little thing called "extortion" -- see, e.g. Cal. Penal Code Sect. 518 et seq. (Google that one, SFisters without Westlaw access).
Dumb ass should have stayed on his "long planned" (i.e. 2 weeks before we bought tickets) trip to China. What IS the status of the US-China extradition treaty?
Ed is trying to evade the SF perp walk.
-marc
I believe there is no extradition treaty between the US and the PRC.
In any case, I hear that Namibia wants some Quickly tapioca tea franchises.
You know, those pointy tapioca straws might make for a good shiv. Boba pruno, anyone?
The week I decide to go to Burlingame to visit the family (who live not far from Ed's abode) and I miss the surrender while at dinner.
Oh, the irony.
Forget this nonsense. Who will Newsom appoint?
mark (37):
We can always do it again, but we already speculated on potential appointees in comments in the first of the "Oh No" series here:
www.sfist.com/2007/05/21/the_last_few_da.php
In case he is guilty, he can do what Paris Hilton does... do the jail time at home!!... wait.. that's why he turned himself in Burlingame...
he might be sent to his sunset home.. he probably won't like it there since there's not much furnitures there!! haaa
Newsom will appoint Hayes-White or Jennifer both need jobs, but only one can keep his secrets!
Bvrlingame-oh yeah you Caltrain riders rock!
Hey does anyone remember the story about the homeless guy who was beaten to death in front of Ed Jew's flower shop? Why'd he even have the security cameras... the flower shop was looking "closed" at that time (years ago!!), much like his "home" in the Sunset. Hmmmmm.
When are we going to start hearing about Ed's business practices prior to becoming a supe? Anyone wanna share?
All you guys imagining parallels between Ed and Dan White are waaaaay off the mark. Remember the Twinkie Defense? Jew's legal team will revive it in the form of the TAPIOCA DEFENSE! Yes, the Tapioca Defense. Have you ever tasted one of those godawful drinks? All the complimentary drinks from Quickly turned Ed's brains into tapioca! And when your brains turn into tapioca, you'll stop at nothing! Bribery. Perjury. Yes, you'll even turn off your water and stop showering!
This all reminds me of when Mitt Romney ran for governor (and won) in Massachussetts a few years back. He his "primary residence" was in Utah for tax/whatever purposes and lived there (he ran the olympic committee, remember) but then ran for governor in Mass. 'cause he had a house there - why not? Well when they brought it up in the race he quickly did some paperwork and claimed that he "forgot to file it" years ago. Somehow Boston never pursued it and that's how Mass. got a Utahan for a governor. Eddie shoulda talked to Mitty before pulling this stunt.
To Alex (14) – Thank you so much for the shout out! The answer, of course, is a, c, and d. The link to my prescient SFist post yesterday is http://www.sfist.com/2007/06/11/oh_no_ed_jew_pa.php (comment #17).
To amphibian (22) – You correctly point out that Jew claims that the 28th Ave place is his father’s house (though I have read that Jew owns some portion of the house in trust). However, ownership of the house does not end the DA’s (or the City Attorney’s) inquiry into Jew’s residence. Section 349 of the State Elections Code, along with some other state code sections and caselaw guide the legal inquiry. The legal issue of “residence” tries to get at the reality of where a person “lives” regardless of ownership.
Fun Fact: On May 24, the Examiner listed a bunch of properties owned by the Jew family. Only one property (owned, I think by Mrs. Jew) declared the CA State homeowner tax break – which may only be taken at the claimant’s primary residence. (See Cal Revenue and Tax Code Sec. 218) Where is that property that someone declared to be a primary residence? 1490 Newcomb Ave. – in Sophie Maxwell’s district (District 10).
-Melissa
Tapioca Ed...Jenny and the Bees...what's next SF, Daly reveals he is actually a woman? Newsom denies he has had facial implant surgery to "set" his over-reaching smile? Sean Penn moves to the Sunset to enter race for Ed's vacant seat?
Bring back Free Willie, aka Da Mayor for heck's sake!
San Francisco daze...San Francisco knights.
I heard the Burlingame Police station serves better meals than the Taraval Police Station in the Sunset district.
November 10, 2006 - BCN - A jubilant Ed Jew hugged family members and campaign volunteers today as the unofficial results of a ranked choice tally named him the new District 4 supervisor.
Standing outside the Department of Elections, the flower shop owner who has never been elected to public office thanked his wife, daughter, mother, father and the Sunset District community for the win.
"This is amazing, this is amazing," Jew shouted. "Oh my God. Thank you guys."
(This was before "Tapioca Gate".)
***It wasn't suppose to be like this.***
Flower power,
Water shower,
Home is where the heart is.
Sunsets, Burly Games and seldom rainy daze.
Avenues, absence and the FBI.
Poor Mister Jew,
For being so easy on the cue,
Forever bringing shame,
to our city by the bay.
Hooray. Hooray. Hooray.
Friday 6/15/2007.
Now Ed Jew's buddies are playing the "RACE CARD."
So when all else fails, let's play the "RACE CARD!"
Question:
Why did Fed Ed turned himself in to the Burlingame Jail?
Answer:
Because they serve better meals to prisoners than the San Francisco jails.
