SF Sketchfest: RiffTrax Live
Last night, SFist went to see RiffTrax Live at the San Francisco Sketchfest. It was really funny, everyone laughed, there were no awkward silences, and the topic of Mormonism didn't come up once. In all, it was a great show and we really liked it.
The end.
What? Isn't that enough?
Fine.
"Mystery Science Theater 3000" is one of those shows we still miss. Sometimes it comes at us late at night, around two am, when we're slightly drunk, and there's nothing on TV, and we remember those days when we could fall asleep watching an episode of MST3K, and wake up the next morning to another episode. The early 90s were awesome. What we wouldn't give for some channel to start rerunning the show. Of course, there are DVDs to be purchased, but frankly, they're a little expensive, and, being the anal-retentives we are, we're annoyed that they aren't releasing full, complete seasons of the show, starting from the very begining. Instead, we just continue to whine about the lack of MST3K in our lives.
So, when we learned about the existence of RiffTrax, wherein Mike Nelson, often accompanied by Kevin Murphy and/or Bill Corbett, makes fun of NEW movies, we were really, really happy. If you've ever wondered what the MST3K boys would have to say while watching The Fellowship of the Ring, well, wonder no longer! You'll have to go to their site to learn more about how it works, but basically, you download an MP3 of their RiffTrax, and watch your copy of the DVD while playing the MP3.
Wednesday night's show at Cobb's featured Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett skewering Ben Affleck and Daredevil. We make the distinction between Affleck and the movie because much of derision was directed at Affleck himself, and not just the movie. As it should be. We don't want to give away all the good jokes, because a RiffTrax for the movie will be coming soon, but will say our favorite line of the night was probably, "Can I touch your face?...And not necessarily with my hands."
Even though the show was scripted (you didn't think the MST3K shows were all off-the-cuff did you?) the guys managed to make it sound pretty spontaneous; they're like a finely-tuned comedy machine. It was also great listening to them in a crowd; MST3K always makes us laugh, even when we're alone, but being with a crowd of fellow MST3K nerds made it seem even funnier.
And yes, the crowd was full of nerds. We wanted to yell, "Nerd alert!" when we walked into the club, and then realized we fit the demographic perfectly. And we're not the least bit ashamed! Thankfully the Q-and-A session at the end was free from any really embarassing moments, although one fan's question about what John Hughes movie they'd like to do was met with some awkward responses. "Uh. Didn't he do Uncle Buck?" We think movies starring Patrick Swayze or Vin Diesel are probably more their style.
Seeing the show last night, and knowing of the existence of RiffTrax has filled us with joy. MST3 what?

Shit, Rain. I had so hoped that you'd pan the show, prompting Mike Nelson to post a hysterically defensive rebuttal that would cure my 15 year crush on the man. Oh, well.
There's still time for Affleck to show up.
Also, the guys were promoting The Film Crew Online, where they will go back and give the MST3K treatment to older B-movies (that they can get the rights to). They're currently taking votes for which movie they release first.
The Film Crew DVD that's coming out is "Hollywood After Dark" with a stripping Rue Mclanahan. Yes, the one who starred in "Golden Girls" on TV.
It'll be out in early April I think.
