Everybody Hates Chris: The District 6 Election RESULTS

chrisunavailable.jpgExhausted ballots and exhausted bloggers -- in the District 6 race! This week's episode: Everybody Hates RCV.

District 6 -- DALY WINS. Check here. Congratulations, Chris!

And in other RCV news -- Ed Jew wins.

And in obsessive refresh ability -- SFIST WINS!! We got our post up first over everyone else -- up by 3:47 p.m. MUST CREDIT SFIST!

Updated numbers are here. Results below. Rob Black got to 40%. We're cranking through the math and will throw it in the post after the jump. Update: Okay, it's up. We'll throw more stats in as we think of 'em.

Okay, so the totals that appear below are the FINAL FINAL numbers (though not officially certified). [Update: Nope, not quite -- there's still 1500 provisionals for both District 4 and 6 that need to be hand-counted.] The numbers we had before were the unofficial count as of 2:30 p.m. The RCV page has all the final totals as "pass one," and we've transcribed them here.

CHRIS DALY . . . . . . . . . . 7,298 48.18

Of Jordan's votes, Black picked up: 17.
Daly picked up: 13.
Drake picked up: 9.
Number of ballots exhausted: 41.

Eliminated: George Dias (196 votes plus one of Jordan's = 197)
Of Dias's votes, Black picked up: 36.
Daly picked up: 30.
Drake picked up: 34.
Number of ballots exhausted: 31.

Round 3:
Eliminated: Viliam Dugovic (293 votes, plus 6 of Jordan's, plus 10 of Dias's = 309).
Of Dias's votes, Black picked up: 37.
Daly picked up: 60.
Drake picked up: 93.
Number of ballots exhausted: 64.

Round 4:
Eliminated: Manuel Jimenez (273 votes, plus 10 of Jordan's, plus 40 of Dias's, plus 18 of Dugovic's = 341).

Looks like Daly won. And picked up more votes via RCV than Black did.

The voters have spoken.

user-pic

ohmygawd!!! Gavin Newsom was absolutely right!!!

"The only person who expected Rob Black to win was Rob Black".

suckeerrrrrrrrrr.................

user-pic

I want to see you cry and cry and cry Rob Black.

PUT IT ON YOUTUBE!!!

You've been hovering like a vulture since day before yesterday over our electoral process, praying to whatever slimy dark creature you worship that someone was able to stuff the ballot box with false absentees or provos, or false votes for other candidates.

Keep your drooling filthy tentacled paws off the good voters of our great city!!!

Your turn to cry, Rob Black. I want to see you cry and cry and cry. Someone, please, with the video...put it up......

user-pic

I guess if the people who voted for the lower vote getters rather see Daly win than Black?

user-pic

As much as I want to see Rob Black cry (and maybe show us his lips), more importantly - who the heck is Ed Jew? During the campaign all the media coverage was Jaynry Mak vs. Doug Chan. Ed Jew?!?!?!?

user-pic

OK, thanks to google, I have no found out that Ed Jew looks like he might be the Chinese-American version of Tony Hall.

What's up with Drake getting 93 votes from Dugovic? Say it ain't so Viliam! I told Chris he should've endorsed Viliam as his 2nd choice.

Ed Jew is very much a Chinese-American Tony Hall. He's bounced back and forth between the Democrats and the Republicans. He supports smaller government, opposes inclusionary affordable housing requirements, thinks the City is taxing small businesses out of town. How the hell did he sneak off with that seat?

user-pic

I tied to explain this to my sister in Ill and see is as dumb founded by this RCV, Where she lives who ever gets the most votes on election day is the winner. But I like it because I don't have to put up with a mailbox full of slung mud all the way until December.

user-pic

After a few years of RCV, it will be interesting to see the percentage of candidates who have won despite having not received the most votes before second and third choices get counted.

user-pic

Thanks for the info Digga.

Your question is a good one. Sounds like Jew has been around for a while, so maybe he got the benefit of name recognition combined with the conservative ethnic vote in the Sunset district. Lots of Chinese-American homeowners out there and they tend to skew conservative, esp. on tax and small business issues, as many of them are small business owners themselves.

user-pic

The voters have indeed spoken.

Talk of a Daly recall is pure nonsense. I personally don't like the result, but it is the result nonetheless. Use of a recall to invalidate the result of a fair election is anti-democracy.

I guess it's time to see if I/we can find a way to make our voices heard with Daly.

Dear Friends,

I am writing to thank you for your help and your support. We have spent the last several months working to change the dialogue at City Hall - to bring people together to build healthy, safer neighborhoods and communities. We have run a positive, issue based campaign against a tough two-term incumbent. However, in the final results we have fallen short.

The final un-official results under Ranked-Choice Voting have Supervisor Chris Daly winning re-election with 7,484 votes to my 6,248 votes.

I am very proud of our campaign, our volunteers, and what we accomplished in a few short months. I look forward to continuing the conversation we started in this campaign about how, by working together, we can make San Francisco better for all of us.

Lisa and I are going to take a few days to get away and recuperate but we will be in touch soon.

Yours truly,

Rob Black

"We have run a positive, issue based campaign..."

Filthy fucking Liar. You are a weird, weird guy.

"It really hit me just how desperate the downtown forces are to knock Chris Daly off the Board of Supervisors when I dropped in on Daly's headquarters in the Mission last night and data wizard Marc Solomon handed me an anti-Daly door hanger featuring photos of a bottle of urine and what appears to be human feces: "The number 1 reason to dump Chris Daly…IS number one…(and number two…)."

Wow. How much lower can they go?"

http://www.fogcityjournal.com/news_in_brief/blackwell_061107.shtml

"Black's campaign workers told us they had no idea who Rob Black was but that they were being paid $15 an hour to sit next to the 3 or 4 signs they had propped up in the plaza among the sea of Daly, Kim and Keefer placards. "

http://www.fogcityjournal.com/news_in_brief/court_jesterings_061105.shtml

user-pic

"The only person who thought Rob Black could win was Rob Black."

Yeah right. Oh -- and the 6,046 other people who voted for him.

And Chris Daly still got a lower percentage of his constituents' votes this time than he did in 2002, which goes to show you something about his appeal.

user-pic

First of all, thank GOD this is over!

Secondly, congratulations to Daly - he and Black both worked their asses off and the results show that.

However, as the Gonzalez camp repeatedly crowed after Newsom won the Mayor's race in 2004, FIFTY PERCENT IS *NOT* A MANDATE. Clearly, half the voters were dissatisfied with Daly, and they can only hope he will now be a little more responsive to *their* concerns. I have my doubts.

Finally, I hope this means the end, at least for now, of Rita openly pushing her progressive agenda on the loyal sfist readers who have been enjoying this site looong before it got so virulent...

user-pic

I should say that Scott is always nice enough to apologize to me after he leaves one of these comments.

user-pic

I deeply enjoy Rita's mildly progressive vibe. And the coverage of the race. It wasn't overly Bay Guardianish, and it wasn't overly Chronicleish. It occupied a nice, funny middle ground. And it was really more informative than any other source. Thanks!

WE KNOW ALL ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS, LIAR.

"Left to his own devices, Rob Black would probably still be polling single digits in his run for District 6 Supervisor. The sole mailer emanating from his campaign was a tepid criticism of Chris Daly's in-your-face style. But Black has been getting a lot of help from his, um, friends.

Voters in District 6 have been inundated with mailers, push polls, emails and phone calls. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are being spent to defeat Supervisor Chris Daly, with Gap-founder Don Fisher's SFSOS coordinating the expenditures and attack dog Jim Sutton shaping the message. Their spending in support of Rob Black (a former associate of Sutton) has been so egregious that the Ethics Commission was forced to lift the spending cap in District 6 to give Daly a chance to fight back."

Get out of town and stay out you weird little prick. Consider yourself EVICTED.

Yeah, and Mayor McDreamy has been SOOOOO responsive of the needs of San Franciscans who don't live in the Marina or Pac Heights. Because he's been SOOOOO responsive to substantively addressing crime in the City's poor and working class nabes. Because he's been SOOOO responsive to fixing the public schools that the City's poor and working class parents send their kids to.

Althought I will say this. Newsom hasn't acted like he has a mandate so much as he doesn't really need to work hard.

user-pic

Congratulations to Daly, re-elected as a leader of the Peoples Republic of SF. You should be so proud of Sixth street between Mission and Market, I'm sure small business will now flock to the urine soaked street so they can pay all of their new employees sick leave. What a great pro-business initiative. And I'm sure all the owners of the disgusting tenements in the area are going to want to fix up their buildings so they can pay each "professional" renter even more extortion money.

user-pic

This is a sad day for District Six.

Perhaps I can send a shovel to Mr. Daly to come and clean the increasing piles of human waste in front of my home and business located here...

user-pic

Rita, respectfully, I dont recall ever leaving a comment on this election that required an apology, much less ever offering one.. You may be thinking of some other poster?

Hey, I love surfing the sfist. I was among sfists first devotees. However, its no secret you've been pushing your agenda on this ostensibly non-partisan site with partisan posts. But whatever. The election is over and we can hopefully all move on.

you have done an excellent job rita!

Proud of picking on women, you mean?

Rob, you would have made a truly terrible supervisor. Your campaign was unethical and from my understanding perhaps even criminal and you would have certainly run your district the same way.

SF is so genuinely lucky you have lost.
Below is just one indication of how truly dirty your campaign and your candidacy really was, and your claim that you ran a clean campaign and you want more civility in city hall is so obviously false it almost seems an indication of a pathological flaw in your character.

I think you may have an actual clinical personality disorder.

"DALY'S WEENIE WIFE

user-pic

seriously, this site used to be fun. it is now just a place for people to run around (including rita)pretending to be what the sfist was while pimping an agenda. if you want to be sf's version of foxnews, merge with beyond chron or the guardian or whatever. this not a fun place if you are not here for an idealogy fix.

user-pic

Your supporters stoop to calling out a young woman, a new mother of a five month old, who got a little tipsey and has no experience in front of cameras and made a basically generic, playful comment that we have all said and heard said to us over and over this campaign.

Again, that Sentinel article calling out a new mother is (I keep using this term over and over and over when you come up in discussion) morally repugnant, a disturbing lack of judgement, just another in a long list of examples of the character of your campaign, some of which again, from my understanding, may actually be criminal and could result in actual federal indictments.

It would have been a disaster if you had actually been elected supervisor of district 6 because I think you may have set a new low in politics, at least over the last few years, and that really says a lot.

user-pic

Go Sarah Go! If I was her and my husband's political opponents had spent hundred of thousands of dollars sliming him, equating my husband with human feces, then I sure as shit, when winning, would tell that crew of two bit lobbyists to fuck off. (that's what the GGRA are folks, LOBBYISTS - no different than Jack Abramoff)

that's what i never understood amongst the Black supporters. he was paid for and a front man for these groups - GGRA, SFSOS, BOMA - they're lobbyists. Black was the lobbyist's candidate.

when the only reason you break into double digits is because the lobbyists and corporate folks have, behind the scenes (which I witnessed personally), chosen you as "their" guy, who do think he was going to answer to? the public or to the moneymen who put him in his office?

campers,

a picture is worth xxx words. Go to fogcityjournal.com and look at all of the pictures from today's final results (we were there) and Sarah's speech and the governor's reaction. Click down the right hand margin and dig Luke's magic. At times, with my writing accompanying it, we're kind of like a comic book. And thanks to Sfist for all the links.

Great job on the election Sfist. I never expected you'd be so fair.

thanks again,

h.

user-pic

Yeah, why don't you move on Scott?

Frankly, I've enjoyed the SFist's coverage and I've also been a reader from the beginning. All of this nonsense of "pushing an agenda" is taking a move straight out of the Dirty Politics Playbook, San Francisco Edition. Your only intent is to defame SFist and Rita's character as being unfair and dogmatic.

That's bullshit.

Black and the other candidates had their chance to reach out to SFist readership, and while some of them took up the challenge, Black (to his OWN detriment) did not. And excuse me, but while it was apparent (though never really blatant) that Rita was/is a Daly supporter, she doesn't own SFist, she's not the only writer, and she's not the editor - and even if she was, she also has a right, just like you, to be active in the political life of the city.

I don't see anyone over at the Chron or the Examiner or SF Sentinel apologizing for their election coverage or personal politics.

I thought she did a fine job of being "non-partisan" (by the way, Scott, both Daly and Black are Democrats - how is it being "partisan" to support one over the other?). And for the most part, I thought the coverage was fair and balanced (again, Black dissed SFist).

"Hey, I love surfing the sfist. I was among sfists first devotees. However, its no secret you've been pushing your agenda on this ostensibly non-partisan site with partisan posts. But whatever. The election is over and we can hopefully all move on."

I really love how you write. I'm sure you speak the same way - it's likely a personal tick anyone who knows you must hate. A classic poison-in-a-pretty-pill, bullshit passive-aggressive remark that only a dishonest and really pent up person could make.

But whatever.

aye carumba, can't y'all play nice? i'm obviously not an unbiased observer, but i thought rita did a good job of staying fair and balanced. everyone else (the chronicle, examiner, fogcityjournal, beyondchron, sentinel, etc.) all shoved their opinions at us to various degrees. rita mostly just told us what was happening along with some light and witty commentary.

starting about three weeks ago, the coverage became daly heavy, but you know what? that's when the whole campaign, district, and entire city became daly heavy. rita pleaded for the non-daly people to send her stuff, but there was nothing but a smattering of strange and ugly youtubes.

we unleashed a barrage of sweet, serious, and silly youtubes, a chris daly rap, daly costumes, daly bar crawls with the league of pissed off voters and the late night coalition. we exposed how rob black had to pay volunteers. (and we also did the usual stuff like phone banking, precinct walking, rush hour visibility, yadda yadda.)

and what was rob black doing? a fundraiser at jack falstaff's? walking around with gavin? thanking the GGRA and POA for their ugly and misleading independent expenditures?

put the politics aside for a minute, and i don't see how you can deny that we blew those fools out of the water, and rita's coverage reflected that.

Waaahh! wahhhh! booo hoo hoo! boo hoo hoo! waah! waaah! someone is not agreeing with me 100%+ that Chris Daly is Satan's Spawn! Lookit me cry like a baby! waaahh wahhh! booo hoo hoo! let me blubber away like a sad old woman at a funeral! booo hooo hooo!

in fact, let me cry more! and let me demand that everyone kowtow to my beliefs 100% in total political correctness and GOD DAMN YOU if you don't agree with me! why, I'll post on blogs and sfist.com and anywhere else as soon as I get my eyes dry from crying!

boo hoo hoo! I'm so sad! I 'better get really upset and angry! maybe I'll get lucky and get a restraining order against me because I'm such a sore loser I need to get angry and be a whiny kindergarten girl! boo hoo hoo!

and if the other side had lost I'd have been so happy! I'd have ridiculed them for being mad or upset! because our boys are always right and political correctness beats out a reasonable discussion of our city's politics!!

can I cry some more? PLEEEEEZE!??? Can I yell at rita more too? because I wanna cry like a little child!

user-pic

Reading these comments, I am *really* glad I don't live in district 6.

Note to Sarah: Calling your opponents "motherfuckers" is probably not the smartest thing for your husband's political career. After this election, where will Chris go? Outside his district he is radioactive.

The real loser here is Newsom. That comment about Rob was highly inappropriate. Even if you don't think your endorsed candidate will win, don't say that if you want people to work with you in the future.

user-pic

Who cares if Sarah is a new mother? Inappropriate comments are inappropriate, regardless of who makes them.

As for the independent expenditure ads, they are *independent,* people. I don't imagine Rob was involved in the poo flyers (since they went over badly and it was clear they would) - though the point they made, that Daly couldn't give two shits (literally) about quality of life issues, was correct.

user-pic

Rita's election posts are great. I couldn't tell which side she was on (cf. the advocacy journalism of the Guardian, SF Sentinel, or Fog City Journal). Did Black say something negative about SFist?

Comments about somebody being a "new mother" are somewhat patronizing, are they not?

user-pic

You know Chris is in line to become the next BOS prez!

user-pic

For Black's supporters to attack the wife, a new mother, of the candidate was repugnant, just like so much else in Rob Black's dishonest campaign.

user-pic

And the fact that Rob Black's supporters cannot seem to comprehend just how craven it is, well that's just been standard procedure for at least the last three weeks.

user-pic

...Comments about somebody being a "new mother" are somewhat patronizing, are they not? ...

ha ha is that you Angela?

Your legislative aid is pathetic.

You really should fire him.

user-pic

You think the flier was bad? On election day, someone took a bottle full of yellow liquid, rolled it in feces, and left it on the wall of the Gene Friend Rec Center (a polling place) where people could see (& smell) it on their way to vote.

user-pic

"However, its no secret you've (Rita) been pushing your agenda on this ostensibly non-partisan site with partisan posts."

Hey -- she's just putting her mouth where her money is. Everyone here does realize that Rita donated cash to Chris Daly's campaign, right?

user-pic

Definition of nonpartisan

non·par·ti·san

ADJECTIVE:

Based on, influenced by, affiliated with, or supporting the interests or policies of no single political party: a nonpartisan commission; nonpartisan opinions.

So by you saying that rita had not been nonpartisan is calling Rob Black a republican?

user-pic

"So by you saying that rita had not been nonpartisan is calling Rob Black a republican?"

I don't recall Rita calling Rob Black a Republican, but anyone who does call him that, wears their ass for a hat. Black has never been a Republican, and it's only in the fantasy-land of San Francisco double-speak that anyone would suggest that he is one.

Just as anyone who would call Chris Daly "representative of his constituents" is delusional.
