When does the RCV count begin -- in the District 6 election! And as promised earlier, this week's episode is indeed titled: Everybody Hates The Wait.
--Man, it sounds like we just missed the Dalys' almost-to-victory speeches at the DNA Lounge last night. Savannah Blackwell (yay! she's writing again!) has the good word. We're trying our best to get YouTube footage of Mrs. Chris Daly telling off "the motherf**kers at the Golden Gate Restaurant Association," and if we find it, you know we're going to pimp it in a separate post! And -- nooooo! The Dalys were thinking about moving to the 'burbs? Stay, Chris, stay! Do we have to give you the same speech we gave Potrero Hill Mike?
--On the 39% side, the mood was described by Pat Murphy over at the Sentinel as "grim" and words were "spoken through tightened lips." (Nice pictures of the scene at MoMo's, though!)
--There's some teeth-gnashing by the anti-Dalys on the SF Wall, and some gloating over at the Junto.
--And over there at the MSM, the Chron seems to be trying to make nice with Daly now that they've got four more years of entertaining local politics coverage to look forward to. Look, M&R's outraged -- today -- by the SFSOS lower-intestine ad. Meanwhile, the Examiner kicks the dirt and mutters "nuts!" under its breath in its terse coverage.
--An interesting stat, pointed out on SFJunto. Daly (5471, 49.66%) got fewer votes total than Alix Rosenthal (6260, 30.57%). Low turnout and lots of candidates in District 6, high turnout and fewer candidates in District 8.
--Someone give Matt Drake a job! Also, does anyone know exactly how much money was spent in the District 6 race? We thought we read an estimate of $300,000 in independent expenditures for Black and $120,000 in self-funding by Daly, but we're not sure if that's right. If you know, post it in the comments!
--We saw the headline "Padres Hire Black As Manager" on the Gate and our first thought was maybe that's why Rob Black was always at MoMo's! Similarly, we were shocked to also see the headline Daly Headed To Fourth Divorce.
We'll try and update this throughout the day as we hear stuff.
Picture of a crying Sarah Daly and triumphant Chris Daly by flickr user willsfca.

that was quite a party. the drinks were pouring a little strong out there. but it was fun!
wow, she said "fuck those motherfuckers." Into a microphone. in front of a bunch of people and her husband and cameras.
that is one klassy lady. her mother must be very proud.
Isn't that 50.34%?
And yes, Sarah is Klassy with a K. The other side has three, though.
suzeqzee, reading this site is only making you angrier. Just...let go.
actually, I'm not angry at all. I'm very happy about Pelosi and some other stuff that happened this morning.
I don't get what three is though? the other side has three?
oh, three K's. got it. cuz everyone who doesn't support daly is a white supremacist. gotcha.
That's certainly an interesting statement and really not worthy of you, sasha.
sigh, I guess I have to go tell my fiancee that he's a white supremacist. I've been trying to convince him that he's not mexican for years but then his damn family comes around and it's all beans and ranchero music and brown skin. maybe you can help me?
math error! Sorry to lose you that 1% of love, Chris! Thanks, Sasha.
And while I have you here, Sasha, can I just say --- YOU CALLED IT!!! 51-39. Who do you have winning next week's Niners game?
Suzeqzee,
How many years has he been your fiancee?
why do you want to know, kevin?
I can't pinpoint the exact date that he asked me to marry him, but it was some point after he became my boyfriend and before we moved in together.
you know, here in D6.
we were waiting for stuff to settle down - my sister was really ill and in the ICU at UCSF for like, 6 months and then in and out for the next 12 battling cancer before she finally succumbed. very tragic, very young. so, we were bf/gf for like a year before that and then all through that and now she's been gone about a year and a half too.
he was so great, totally stuck by me when my family was all crazy and we were all distraught - really a pillar of strength. I am lucky to have him. I'm lucky he's put up with all this bs I've had to deal with - he totally looked out for me and helped me put my foot down when everyone was pulling me in 6 different ways. Plus, my sister loved him.
however, I am bracing myself for whatever mean comment you seem to be plotting. go ahead, do your worst.
Again, I repeat...just let go.
re: the Niners. I have no idea. Football's not something I know anything about. Politics, though, and especially San Francisco politics, I get.
So what's with the Chris Daly/Dist.6 obsession @sfist?
Well, it was definitely the most interesting race in town...speaking as a Sunset dweller.
No mean comment...just wondering.
Sure are a lot of sore losers around here.
Whining when you lose - so not attractive.
And so what is Ms. Daly used "fuck" - I've heard just as much salty language coming from John Kerry.
Everybody acts so faux offended that a public official might use colorful language - oh no, he said a naughty word! I might melt!!!
Yeah, Dave, it's just an excuse to attack a pro-labor, pro-tenant, and (yes) pro-progressive growth candidate.
If they lived outside of the city, they'd tar and feather the Dalys with the "San Francisco Values" label.
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if they don't!
Really, people. Stop being so ugly and hateful.
You're acting VERY un-San Franciscan.
Kevin - insincere attempt to backpeddle - but I'll let it drop for now.
and therapy - I don't require any "helpful advice" from anonymous sources. thanks though.
:)
ps - I didn't see anyone whining about losing in this thread. I do see some people acting pretty ugly about potentially winning, but they're the same people who've been ugly all along, so what can you do? some people are just ugly.
Now that chris "won" and was so keen on newsom having a monthly Q&A is he going to do the same for his own constituents?
Daly won. Black lost. I am personally disappointed but moving on.
I do think Mrs. Daly's tirade suggests infection from the hubby. If she can say that, I can call her a stupid twat. I certainly wouldn't want to sample any entree she's served by an SF restaurant. The "fucking motherfuckers" will certainly put some disgusting shit in her food. And, being in D6, they can go pop outside to get some.
"I certainly wouldn't want to sample any entree she's served by an SF restaurant. "
Yeah, 'cause the cooks who now have paid sick time for the first time in their lives are sure gonna poison Daly. The waiters whose wages were raised by Daly are sure gonna spit in Sarah's food.
Here's the thing: the people who own the restaurants hate Chris. The people who cook and serve the food, who clean the tables and wash the dishes, those people like Chris.
I have no idea who the hell you are, and I'd still take Sarah on my team 100% of the time. Doesn't sound like you're "moving on" to me. Sounds like you're still a
There's no grapes like sour grapes.
Well said, Sasha.
Remind me, Sasha, who the "motherfuckers" targeted by Mrs. Daly's unfortunate outburst are? Oh, that's right. The Golden Gate Restaurant Association. Not that we have amny restaurants in SF.
Patrick,
Looks like Chris won. TIME TO MOVE YOUR BUSINESS OUT OF SF!!

While you're at it, why don't you take off too... and try not to let the door slam you on the way out (although, I won't feel bad if it does)?
As far as I'm concerned, you'd be just one less greedhead stinking up my district with your "mine, mine, mine, me, me, me" philosophy.
Ya know, LBJ used to conduct staff meetings while shitting on the toilet. And that guy is the reason we have civil rights legislation in this country.
I don't care what kind of language comes out of a politician's mouth. I care about what kind of legislation they pass. And it seems to me, that giving low-paid, hard working San Franciscans paid sick time is a pretty good thing.
My point, Patrick, was precisely that the "motherfuckers" in the GGRA are the people (and corporations) who own restaurants, not the people who work in them. As it turns out the people who work in restaurants are the ones who make and serve food that "twats" like Sarah Daly eat. They're the ones who finally get sick pay. They're the ones whom the minimum wage hike helped. Why the hell would they screw with Sarah's food?
Hey, can we say "motherfuckers" and "twat" on SFist?
the sad thing about this race, black' team found 7k people committed to voting for him. only 4500 showed up. the apathetic crowd deserves a shitbag like daly as their supervisor.
Jash, I think you meant "found" or maybe "7k". The number was BS from the beginning. But you never get all your IDs out to vote anyway.
Oh, and Rita, I am not sure what the numbers actually are, but I am pretty sure that enough went out anonymously that we'll never know what the actual numbers are. I think yours are way low, though. Plus I assume Black spent $100k, and there was the labor IE against Black, which was probably 20k or something. I think the total spent is easily 750k, and I think closer to a million.
Kevin -
That was Gonzalez.
Now shampoo my crotch.
now that you bring up numbers, one of my neighbors worked a precinct yesterday. she said daly supporters were dropping off people to vote at the polling station all day that didn't live in our hood. does anyone else smell election fraud? so much for daly not being a professional politician eh?
;)
PS There are still about 6000 absentees to be counted though, I’ve just been told…so there’s some math available yet.
$750K! You could outright BUY a condo in District 6 for that amount of money.
So assuming $750K, and Daly & Co. spending maybe $250K, that leaves Rob Black spending $500K for 4000 votes -- about $125/voter (check my math, Sasha, you know I'm bad at it!). And Daly at about $45/voter ($250,000/5500). I wonder what the average campaign costs per voter?
....and on Daly-style language -- we the writers aren't allowed to swear in the posts (corporate policy, though sometimes they do slip by) but if you guys keep it in bounds in the comments, we don't get too upset. We do, however, reserve the right to delete anything that's offensive just for the sake of being offensive. I know, it's wishy-washy.
"black' team found 7k people committed to voting for him. only 4500 showed up. the apathetic crowd deserves a shitbag like daly as their supervisor."
The thing about polling and releasing numbers of ID'ed supporters is that it's mostly about managing expectations. If a candidate is perceived to be down in the polls and the opponent allegedly has enough ID'ed supporters to win the race, the logic goes it will demoralize the supporters of the candidate and bring the opponent to victory.
I think the exact opposite happened in this race, which I'd argue was a huge tactical error by Black's camp because it energized Daly's base and contributed to his massive GOTV effort.
As was pointed out on a prior SFist post, if you believe both sides (Daly claimed 6,000 ID's & Black claimed 7,000) it exceeded the number of registered voters in D6. Someone was clearly cooking the numbers.
Based on election results, I think its pretty clear who was cooking the numbers. Daly received 5,471 votes, or 91% of his claimed 6,000 ID'ed supporters. The point being - I don't believe for one second Black had 7,000 ID's.
Call our Supervisor whatever name you like...it's not as if he hasn't been called everything in the book already. But to turn out over 90% of your identified voters is pretty impressive in any political race. I'd say that's the exact opposite of apathy, I'd say that shows true grassroots commitment to a Supervisor who has fought for us time and time again.
What I think most San Franciscans don't understand about D6 is that the majority of us like our neighborhood the way it is. Sure there's homeless people, drug addicts and prostitutes...but guess what - there will always be those elements of society. The seedy side of society has been in San Francisco since the Gold Rush. Nowadays it just happens to be concentrated in D6.
Personally I don't mind it. If you don't like it, maybe you ought to move to a different neighborhood? Or if you don't live in D6, then maybe you ought to just stay out of our neighborhood?
Rita, your math is right, but one thing I think is important is who spent what. The Daly campaign itself spent ~150k, I think (which is less than $30/voter: cheap). I assume that Black's campaign spent around the same amount.
Most of the money was from independent expenditures, which were, I think, all negative pieces. The candidates' in contrast, were all at least partially positive (i.e., Rob Black didn't just blame Daly for the human digestive system, he also claimed that if he were elected, we'd all crap orange blossoms and cardamom, or something like that).
So the actual campaigns spent $25-40ish dollars per vote, but those prices (if you'll excuse the expression) were driven up drastically by the huge barrage of hit pieces and Examiner stories.
....this just in from the Chron's Local News Blog: the head of the Dept. of Elections doesn't think the 60,000 outstanding absentees are going to make a difference in the D6 (or D4) races and it's all going to go to RCV anyways. He's expecting to announce winners by Friday.
that page is blank
Everyone's being so mean to each other here! Damn those San Francisco values.
Link should be working now, jash (it seems to be going in and out on the Chron's side.)
thanks rita. i beg to differ with the elections folk. as we have been reading here, the majority of daly proponents are busy fighting off hookers, pimps, dealers and panhandlers. i seriously doubt they have their shit together well enough to vote absentee.
:)
Mattymatt,
That's the price of having a public comment section: you get the trolls, looneys, crackpots, cranks and neurotics who usually post to SFGate's Dish blog or the Free Republic site - calling women "twats", sharing way too much information about their mental health, and belly-aching over a democratic, grassroots defeat of a downtown corporate shill like Rob Black. It must be lonely over there, on those blogs, right now. Lonely - like MoMo's was late last night.
Like a frickin' ghost town.
kevin, you left out the people with poor reading comprehension skills and a mean streak.
"It must be lonely over there, on those blogs, right now. Lonely - like MoMo's was late last night."
Thank you, Kevin, for the evocative line of the election. I went to Daly's party last night at the DNA Lounge for the simple reason that I wanted a beer after working at election precincts all day. Not knowing the outcome I didn't know what to expect, and ended up at one of the best, spontaneous San Francisco election parties since Harvey Milk's losing election nights back in the 1970s. It was a real treat and will be another nice memory for down the road.
120K in self funding by Daly? Yet he paid city mandated Below Market Rate for his 2500 square foot condo. Must be nice!
TIme to drown my sorrows with twelve rum & frescas!
Smushy: It was not self funding. What Rita was referring to was spending by Daly's campaign, as opposed to independent expenditures.
mmm... fresca...
"It must be lonely over there, on those blogs, right now. Lonely - like MoMo's was late last night."
You don't know what the hell you're talking about. My wife and I were there from 8:00 until 11:00, and the place was standing-room only. We had to wait 15 minutes just to find a place to sit.
just got back from a celebratory drink at dalva with a bunch of progressive politicos that were working on chris's campaign. much fun.
man, it feels great to win for a change.
=v= The comparison of Daly's votes in District 6 with Rosenthal's in District 8 left out the single most relevant demographic: the number of registered voters. The SFGov site's search engine is also kind of pathetic, but I did track down a spreadsheet that indicated 10,000 more registered voters in D8 than in D6.
"man, it feels great to win for a change"
are you another one of daly's informed constituents? as if he didn't win in 2000 and 2002.
Dah Dah Sah
sah sah daaahhhhhhhh
